There is nothing wrong with doing bricks during any part of your training. But understand they are harder on your body.  Doing a swim/bike or swim/run isn't so bad because of using different muscles, but the bike/run brick if done to often can cause injury.

Without seeing your training plan I would say yes, 12 means 12 minutes.  Understand also, you are doing a sprint tri, so what kind of time are you looking at for a swim.  1/2 mile swim is maybe 20 mins or so, depending on your speed.  So the training plan is going to keep the swim short because you don't need to build endurance for a swim like that.

5 x 100 means 5 sets of 100 yds or 100 meters.  So the break in between should be based on your goals.  If you are looking to get more cardio/endurance out of it, short breaks, 30 seconds or least.  Otherwise you can take longer breaks and work anaerobically and build speed and good form.

Hope that helps.

Good morning sports fans,

I went to the gym for the first time in 2007 last night. It was awful, my short hardly fitted and my muscles were so tight is was like i'd never ever ever; done any exercise.

So i have to start from scratch.

My thinking is i should revert my training plan from the 20 weeks to 16 weeks so i can concerntrait on weight loss and core strengthening for the rest of the month. I can then focus and perform better in my Triathlon training over 16 weeks.

I'm yet to buy a bike and will hopefully get something this weekend.

Mash...

Hey everyone...

So, I am trying to get everythig in order for my first tri...bike fitting, clips, training.... I feel like this is full time job!

I sighned up for 2 other races before my tri...a 5 k on the 27th and a biathlon (swim, run) on the 17th of Feb.  I think it'll be good practice.

Anyway..just wanted to check in.

Have a great day!

Well, almost 3 weeks in and most of you seem to be doing well.  I think we may have lost Carl (rede2train) already.  But lets keep up the good work and the inspiring of each other.

mornin' or goodnight,

I purchased a training bike over the weekend. A 1996 Trek 1200; Aluminium frame and a really smoth ride.

This is just my training bike but i would like to install all of the features my competition bike will have once it's purchased. Is this what i need to buy to make my bike suitable for Tri's;

*Clipless pedals
*Shoes to match
*Aerobars
*Helmet
*Computer

It would also be great if you could recommend which are the best manufacturers for this gear. I don't mind cost as i can transfer all of these components to comp bike.

There is a government scheme in the UK that allows employees to purchase a bike at 40%-50% cheaper then RRP. The bike's cost is subsidised by the employee's national insurance contributions. This means i plan to get the Cannondale R500 Triple 2006 Road Bike.

I'll be cycling to work every morning and home again every evening. I should burn off a few more caleries by doing so, it's approximately five miles to work.

MASH.

The bike you just bought is "suitable" for tri's.  It all depends on how much money you want to dump into your bike(s).  Why are you looking to by another road bike?  Why not a tri bike?  The most important of the items you listed was a Helmet, no helmet, no compete.  Clipless pedals and shoes are seen as having the most benefical effect on effenancy.  A computer is good to have to show you how hard you are working if you don't own a heart rate monitor.

I had to go talk to a class so I had to cut the last one short.  As for name brands, its more about finding what is comfortable for you.  I have Shimano shoes, along with the Shimano pedals, but i also liked the Look pedals and speed play are very good as well.  As for aerobars.  I own a Profile design but know there are a lot of other good companies.  The aerobars are really important to find something that is comfortable for you.

Will,

Something I've learned over the past couple years, its nice to be able to go to a bike shop or tri shop and try things on, ask questions and receive experienced help.  But occasinally you need to throw the shop a bone and accutally buy something from them.  If all you ever do is going in and look and ask questions but never buy, you will be tagged as "that person" and will eventually not get the great customer service that you once did.  Just something to keep in the back of your head.

for sure, it's not my normal code of practise but as i'm new to this sport i will be outlaying a more then usual amount of money on gear over the next few months.

If they have good shoes i'd proably get them from the shop as ebay doesn't have my size 12, (lucky for the Tri shop).

Two more things left...and my bike will be ready.

I pretty much decided to build my bike sloooooooooooowly. Researching and Purchasing parts on ebay after I read pretty much every detail on everything. Did I spend a lot of money?....hmm....mmm....mmmm...YEAH!. I just decided to purchase good stuff and not do a thing to the bike (yeah right) for atleast the next two years. (Well see about that...)

I purchased almost everything from Ebay. THe frame I bough it through a friend who is a Louis Garneau distribuitor here in PR...He also happens to be the swim coach.

So far...I've spent around $2,500 on the bike and the darn thing is not built yet. If I were going to do it all over again I would just buy the complete bike and that's it. For the amount I'm spending....I would've had a bad Cervelo already.

Just some thoughts.

Oh, I always like some good bike porn!

I was also thinking of building a bike, and from the sounds of it, I would pretty much follow your path of using ebay and researching everything. I always figured I could build a great bike a good price. I guess not. Maybe I will just buy a completed package!

You can always buy the bike and upgrade with a few things.

I just have to buy my aerobars the brake handles and cables then I'll be set. I think I'm going to go for the Profile designs Carbon X 1.5 with 100mm stem for the aero bars.

Right on. I remember how nervous/excited I was about clipping in for my first time. Now I cannot imagine riding without 'em. It is amazing the difference.

Hey piper...that's great!.

Regarding Total Immersion. The most fundamental part of the technique is BALANCE. Then I feel that the thing that has helped me the most at my master's swims is the balance part. Learning to switch your body side to side on every stroke has helped me out inmensly in the pool. I got everything from them I read pretty much everything and have the DVD. The DVD is cool cuz you get to see the technique. But remember BALANCE!!! very important.

I just want to complement everyone on doing such a great job so far.  It does appear that we have lost one of our members, Carl (rede2train).  Maybe he will be back.  I think now is a good time to go back and look at your goals and see how you are doing towards progressing and meeting those goals.

Hi Jeff
Not so fast, you haven't lost me. The last 3 weeks have been spent traveling, start of the year a lot of new product to push and taste. Tasting 30 to 40 wines a day doesn't make for good workouts. Thats over for the time being. Monday I'm back full boar. Reviewed my goals sad to say I have a lot of ground to make up. Sorry group I have been M.I.A.. Looking forward to getting back into the routine.
