I am planning on swim team 3 days. At least 2 runs and maybe a bike trainer ride. I may do a half marathon Sunday if my ankle feels good on Friday. I also plan on starting strength work again. Not as lofty as yours, but... I plan to have a great week of training and finish with a nice brick (swim/bike) on saturday morning. I have 2 swim days left, 2 bike, and 1 run left. My strength training is my strong point. My strength is up near were I want it...Felt good during chest and tri's today. I also want to have a very healthy week at work (foodwise). KEN---i did a search for cycle computers...saw you logged over 5000miles...wow. My question for you...what computer are you using? I have a Polar HRM that can double as a bike computer, but i want a specific one that stays with the bike...any suggestions? Ryan, Nothing wrong with your plan for the week. Mine is actually getting easier as I am not gonna do the half marathon. On the bike computer, I actually use a power tap power meter for a speedometer. I bought that after 4 years of riding as I hit a plateau and need something to push me up over 22. Its expensive and you don't need to go there yet. For you I would recommend you get a speedometer that provides cadence, speed, and distance. I would go with a wired computer rather than a wireless. Cadence is very important as a training tool and it probably adds $10 to the computer. There are many different brands out there that will work. One that seems to get alot of positive feedback is the Cateye Austeal (sp). I thinks its around $50. Hope that helps. |

I also plan to get a couple of bike rides in, plus go to the gym a couple of days after work. Wow, you do a lot of running. Just curious what was your typical weekly mileage for the last 3 months? |

I know a number of people who have done it as the first race and have all come away with a very good experience. I would love to try the ATR. I have volunteered the past two years. Running is just my toughest leg of any tri because I am just enjoy the other two stages so much more. I think alot of it is my frustration with being so darned slow plus a left knee issue that started my whole downslide the past months. Too bad I can't import an eliptical machine for the run portion of a race.... :-) As far as clothing, I wear have used a one-piece race suit and now have tri shorts with bike pad and a tri top. I am just modest by nature and can't imagine myself trotting (again, the slow runner...) down any street in a swim suit. Plus my kids would tease me mercilessly!

Well, there was my typical mileage before the holidays, and then there were the holidays (I had a week where my mileage was zero!). But on a usual week I run about 30-35 miles. |

That base will translate well for you into the other sports and I predict you will be placing in your age group on a regular basis. I hope you aren't in my wife's AG |

The person who organizes My First Tri has been encouraging me to do it for the last couple of years. I've finally convinced myself that I can do it, although I certainly have trepidations! If you decide that you want to do ATR, let me know. I'm pretty sure I'm going to run it. I've heard great things about the race. And I agree about running in a swim suit -- UGH! |

Did you start in a single sport, or know someone who did them, or what? My entire life has been sports. From age 4 when I got my first swimming trophy to playing football to beer league softball. With that being said, the MAIN reason is it keeps my great friend John's brain occupied, who is fighting for us in Iraq. He pushes me and I keep him thinking about better things by sharing my tri training with him...We will be doing all of out duathlons, triathlons and possible a marathon together. Master 2314 Gulf Shores, AL | Subject: RE: Manatee Express Group - Full How I got into triathlon? My wife has always been athletic, a gym rat, aerobics queen, spinning, body pump, etc. In 2002 she decided to run the Crescent City Classic 10K and followed a plan. After she did that, she said she wanted to do a triathlon. The triathlon is held at a great beach bar and she said I should get a couple friends together and do a relay team with them. I was the swimmer in baggie shorts! We did it and had so much fun after, we decided to try another. We got 3rd place in the next one and decided it was time to go solo. That was 2002. I bought a real bike after that and I loved riding so much that it just kept progressing. I guess the 2 things that kept me into the sport were training with wife and the fun and friends we have made in the sport. |

Gina, I am weak on strength training but my wife is not. She does weights twice a week pretty religiously. I think you are on target with low weights, high reps. I think she focus's on lower body and core but still does some upper body. She doesn't keep her logs public but I will go in and see what she does and report back. |

She was lured into triathlons by a mutal friend and then she decided I would join them. My first race was the run leg (I am not kidding...) of a relay team. My daughter swam, my friend biked, and I ran. We finished second in the all-female teams so I signed up for another race. In the next race, my daughter swam and I biked and ran. (Ken, this was the Sandman....you might remember that race?) After that, I was on my own. |

Team Magic is doing a race in Gulf Shores! Its called the Alabama Gulf Coast Triathlon and its scheduled for May 7. They haven't published the course yet but the swim is gonna be in the Gulf. The approximate distances are 1000 swim, 20 mile bike, and 5 mile run. |

Master 2314 Gulf Shores, AL | Subject: RE: Manatee Express Group - Full Several of you have asked questions about strength training and I am weak on the knowledge side of this. Its not that I don't think its beneficial, it's just time limitations and lack of motivation that has kept me away from it. I have done it off and on in the past but just don't really enjoy it, so I go ride my bike instead. All that said, the site does have alot of good articles about training. If you click on the articles icon at the top of the home page and go to strength training you will find alot of good articles about strength training for triathletes. In the core section there is a workout my wife loves and uses frequently. It actually has video demonstration of the exercises which some folks will find useful. The link to that workout is : http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=... I am going to talk to Mrs Manatee and ask her for some insight training to share with you as well. She does strength at least 2 days a week. |

They are all heroes! I run the Peachtree Road Race (Atlanta on the 4th of July) every year, and a few years ago they started running a satellite race in Baghdad, Kuwait, and Afghanistan. I found an article on line talking about lots of different "shadow races" for the more popular races. Is he anywhere that he could participate? |

Your pretty swift in the pool! no too swift...I have a huge background in swimming and it is second to walking...endurance wise, well, working on getting that back. But I LOVE the water! My sister (former all-american in college) is trying to make me swim the 1650 (mile) at an upcoming club meet. I laughed and said no. |
