12 in and 12 out, the ride home I pushed and worked hard. Cross wind off the ocean cooled things down which was "nice"!!. This is finals week, and next week I will be FREE to ride every day. Really need to get some swim time in as well as the riding, I have learned of a "pond" which I could incorporate into a non work long ride/swim combo. Does anyone else swim and ride? A couple of people I have spoken to say they swim in there bike shorts etc. These are not "beginner" athletes either, a LOT younger than me, and a lot more concientious re: workouts.

Count me in for the challenge, except I won't have as many as you guys, as I have a 50 mile round trip, and I get out of work at 11PM. Count me in for 1.5 days a week, today was the first, though I have not made it home in the dark yet. I'm not looking forward to 25 miles in the dark.

Majority of my "in" rides(12 miles) are in the dark. I love it, no traffic etc, and I ride a busy day time road(Rt1, York to Wells, ME)
My real joy is the summer when all traffic is backed up and I scream through. My ride is 45min. one way( or there abouts).
Have fun

I've had horrible luck with flats lately. Yesterday I had 2 flats, and after the second I went ahead and put on new tires as well as tubes.

I made it to work fine this morning, but I hadn't even gotten to the gate to get off base before I had another flat. I cried uncle, walked my bike to the bus stop, and hopped a ride home. I have yet another new tube and will be back in the saddle tomorrow.

Ouch, tough luck, Episcopit.

Bopper - sorry to hear about the injury, but it's good that you can still ride.

Welcome to the challenge, tjtryon - be careful out there in the dark.

So far I am at 7 days of excuses and zero rides.   I'll get a couple in next week (I'm off tommorow).

So does everyone just ride their regular training bike, or do they have a dedicated commuter?  I am trying to build up a dedicated commuter but it isn't going so well

Training bike = racing bike = commuter bike, the only difference is if it wears lights. I only have 1 bike, and it fits me well and does the job.

Did this challenge start already? You couldn't tell with my total of 0 commutes so far. I'm not going to complain about the 2 weeks straight of rain predictions as we don't get enough of the wet stuff around here and I'm sure I'll catch up during the drought months.

As for bikes to ride, I have a '87 Schwinn which I bought from a co-worker 2 years ago when I started tris. I used this bike for everything until I bought a used '95 Klein tri-bike in June last year. The poor Schwinn just sat and I really did miss riding it, but the tri bike was just too much fun.

This past "off season", I built the Schwinn up as a fixed gear and I'll probably split the rides between the bikes with my key training days being done on the tri-bike. Also, it is pretty rare that I ride outdoors on my bike that is not a commute to work.

i have two bikes, both are hybrids. one is a mid ninties Giant Innova, stripped of everthing but the neccesaties and running 7000 25's. the other is 2005 Giant Cypress dx, it has everthing on it fenders, mud flaps, rack, headlight, speedo, and 700 38 Armadillo tires. i commute on the newer giant while the other hangs upside down in the garage for the race that i may or may not compete in.

planning to buy a Redline Monocog SS for my commuter in the next month or two, and install disk brakes. i am considering commuting through the winter :o

I have a Jamis Sport that I commute on. At the moment, it is my only bike, so I'm doing training rides on it as well. Shortly, I'm getting a tri bike to replace my recently retired road bike.

Pricepoint.com has the monocog framesets for only $160 right now (frame + rigid fork).  I have been considering getting one myself.  Could have a LOT of fun on that thing.  The 29er frameset is $30 more if you wanna run 700s.

yup for just over $500.00 my LBS will sell me the mono with disk brake installed. i rode a 29er mono 19" frame and it fits me really well, better than my current commuter. but i want the 26" wheels for more of a tire selection. i cant find slicks to fit a 29er any wider than 38, i think it would look a little corny.

I have a Cannondale R300 which I use as a commuter/training in the snow and salt free months, my other bike is a Raleigh M20 for the mucky stuff.
Plan to ride next 4 days( tomorrow to work, or one day ride home being a long one) should put me at +100miles by Mon, Tues. off.
Does any one have a recomendation for HRM's and milage and speed "indicators"? I have in the past not followed a "formal" training plan, just beat myself up to get it done(5 and 10K's and "Reach the Beach" relay, mainly running) Have done some 100K(not miles) charity rides. The bike and running I think I will handle(after getting used to), swimming, I am a good swimmer, just have not swam(for any duration) for years. My first sprint is in Sept. as I also mentioned before I am 54 in reasonable shape.

Chalk me up for 1 more. Fortunatly this is called a bike to work challenge, not a bike from work to home challenge. Family emergency required me to be picked up, so I didn't make it home, but, hey, my 1 way trip is probably longer than most people's roundtrip commute (25 miles 1 way).
