Hey Travis, Catherine started a thread last week announcing an October running challenge. We all signed up for it there and then she divided everyone into teams. You can read all the details in this thread, if you want: Running is fun? Or even FUN! October Challenge I'm pretty new here, but it seems like there is a challenge each month. Hope you'll join in next month. |

Expert 663 Williamsburg, VA | Subject: RE: The Things That Go Bump In The Night Team Thread Sorry to start to post so late. I meant to do it after my run last night but the fam kept me really busy. I did get to a run while my daughter was in piano practice. Thank god I'm a MOM and can multi task pretty well. My name is Susan and I LOVE RUNNING!!!( need to tell myself that.) I started into this crazy tri life last year. Have done 6 sprints so far with one more to go on Sat. The last for the season. I have a goal of a half mary in the spring and the longest distance to date is 5 miles. I seem to have a HUGE mental block at 3 miles, so my goal of 45 miles is a big stretch for me(that's double what I've been doing). Hopefully that will bust the mental block. I work as a respiratory therapist part time and have two girls 15 and 11. Glad Judy told me about the challenge, because I don't ever check that part of the forum. We are going to WIN!!!!!!! |

You look like you're howling from a well placed knee. I'm better at Karate than running, so if you manage to catch me, watch out! LOL Way to go on the 4.5 Judi! I'm seeing a whole new side of you! I like it, I like it!!! LOL LOL, I'm married to a Marine. I get my smack talk from the best. OooRah! And I really do know Karate Yesterday was an off day of training for me. I downloaded the 28week program and this morning his the road running, so to speak. I was only supposed to walk 10 minutes, but I put in 19+ and got my first mile covered. Ross, welcome you handsome devil you! I just love a running man in a black leather coat. Go get 'em! Catherine dear. You see those two sweet faces in my avatar. They are super dooper fast and can leap into the air and catch hummingbirds. Your pathetic winged critter doesn't stand a chance against them. I vote yes to whomever wants to be teamleader! Rynamite...don't look behind you. Hi to you too Susan. Oh and Travis, if you want to play, you couldn't ask for a more motivated team. We have a lot to prove, since the majority of us are newbies. We would more than welcome you. I run to the voices in my head. They keep me on track, plus I don't have to worry about some boob running over me. I had a cyclist scare the beejeebus out of me this morning. He either needs a brighter light or a louder bike! Edited by MrsUSMC 2007-10-02 10:44 AM |

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: The Things That Go Bump In The Night Team Thread Okay, troops! (Wow I feel like Mrs USMC there ) Great start there, congrats to all who have gotten some mileage in already; the game's afoot and we've got the best feet in town! Everybody gets a job and a title around here; we are a team. Like a board with members--everyone is critical! Here's just some starting ideas ... you may grow into your role, you may redesignate your role for yourself or change your title/function, or do so later as you evolve as a night shadow runner (is that cool or what?!) ... but pick a job and do it, WE NEED YOU!!! And like any team, we will help each other out with our respective functions ... leave inspires in our blogs! Go talk smack at other teams! Post a wacky running fact! As a team member, post often. Post anything. Your very presence and participation at any level inspires us, and I mean that. I'm going to add each of you to my friends list in my blog so it's easy to see where you're at and leave inspires--feel free to do the same for your team members (and ask how it's done if you don't know). 1. Antti asu--Man o' the World (maybe once in a while provide an interesting tidbit about running news, events, or runners around the world?) 2. BunnyB--Front-of-Pack Friend (you're running with all of us, not just Mrs USMC; find out our races and and help us train!) 3.Cleavitt--Reporter (just report for duty for now--where are you? We miss you!) 4. Gailg (team cheerleader) 5. Lastcall2003--Media Maven (keep posting inspirational music, lyrics, random fun TV stuff--who knows?) 6. Morgenrr--Skinny Soldier (having done such an amazing job of losing weight and getting fit, keep inspiring us to do the same) 7. MrsUSMC--Lead Defense SmackTalker (responsible for meeting all smack talk challenges dropped in this thread--with word karate or otherwise ) 8. sk2a2005--Team Mom (whatever advice you give to your girls, we want to hear it here--and remind us to take deep breaths and relax ) 9. TriAya--Lead Offense SmackTalker (I know most of the guys around here--especially those motormouth smacktalk wannabes, the TANers--so I'll make sure we have a brutal smack offense going on OTHER threads as well) 10. wurkit gurl--Team Leader!!! 11. zipp1--Border Collie (keep an eye on those of us who seem to be struggling--this will probably be all of us at one point or another--and herd us in with a MOVE IT or an inspire!) |

Subject: RE: The Things That Go Bump In The Night Team Thread All right, folks, as team leader I am officially in charge of the Excel spreadsheet. Per the rules posted on the original Running Challenge thread, you must log all runs as a "run" (even if you walk/run) in your log and these all have to be posted by each Monday (so this week's total has to get to me by this coming Monday) so I can give Kat our updates. I'll tag everyone's logs to keep track during the week - just make sure everything is logged by the following Monday. Thanks, guys!! I am pretty busy at work right now, so I might not be posting a lot during the day. |

Subject: RE: The Things That Go Bump In The Night Team Thread Hey, bonus points today for MrsUSMC, who knows the proper use of the word "run." Triathlon is swimbikerun. You can "walk the run," but you are still doing "the run." You go, girl! For some perspective, two weeks ago the highly competitive and highly decorated head coach of my triclub told me he was walking during part of the 4-mile (!) run at a recent event...and then about an hour later, I got to hear Macca describe walking at Kona three years in a row (if you are such a tri-newbie you don't know who Macca is, try the "who's going to win at Kona this year" thread). His main advice -- I had to think of myself as a runner.

Can we call it "funout" then? As in "wow, I really funned my quads in spin class today" or "hey, that was an awesome swim funout that we did in master's group!" Edited by wurkit_gurl 2007-10-02 2:41 PM |

Yes, the language police will cut you some slack even though you are technically not "out" (outside, that is ... not all of us are lucky enough to live in CA). However, I will bust you for calling yourself fat, flabby, overweight, out of shape, or any other similar term that suggests anything other than bodily perfection! |

LOL Did you walk 1.01 miles on top of your "walking" for 19 minutes and however many seconds? Or is that one and the same? The thing that sucks about the logs is that you cannot log more than one of the same activity in a day - so if you were to do two runs in a day, you'd have to post the cumulative time and distance. So if you want all your walking to count, don' t log it under "sports" as walking - log it all under the run icon. If it was one and the same, though, then you're fine and you'll be credited for 1.01 miles of "running" for that day Edited by wurkit_gurl 2007-10-02 3:35 PM |

Master 2231 Des Moines, Iowa | Subject: RE: The Things That Go Bump In The Night Team Thread Don't be afraid of Spokes. That's just him whining after a bite from a VAMPIRE!! Go Vamps!
BunnyB - 2007-10-01 5:57 PM Eek!! I was really enjoying reading this thread until I saw spokes' spooky picture. I see the smack talk has commenced. My name is Melissa and I'm fairly new to the boards here. I've not done a tri yet, but it's something I've wanted to do for quite some time. Another dream/goal I have is to complete a half marathon. I was training for one a couple of years ago and had to drop out about 7 weeks before the event due to developing PF. My mileage for this challenge will be predominantly walking with bits of running/jogging thrown in here and there. I'm just shy of being 6 months post-op from a multi-level spinal fusion, so I'm just really getting going with exercise again. I'm down for 20 miles. I'm hoping to actually hit about 25, but I figured better to be a bit conservative on my goal and surpass it than to be overly optimistic and miss meeting it. My plan for this week is to go to the gym every day when I get off work. I'm planning to break up the week with walk/running 3 days and elliptical or bike on the other 2 days. I'm planning to do and outdoor longer walk on the weekend, but I'm not sure which day yet. |

It's kind of confusing because by BT's training program, I'm supposed to walk. How am I to tell the difference when I do actually start running according to the program? Oh and puleese! How am I supposed to be afraid of a Vamp that supports Iowa State? Geaux LSU! Go back to your coffin, we're busy planning our takeover of the challenge! Edited by MrsUSMC 2007-10-02 3:50 PM |

But for this challenge, just make sure you log all walking as "running" - if you're doing a couch-to-5K plan, then yeah, there's gonna be some walking. Just log it as "running" and make note as to how much you walked in the comments box underneath. If you look at my earlier logs from May/June, I definitely walked portions of stuff I called "runs". |
