KLilevjen - 2007-12-05 8:11 AM I wish I were wedge-shaped... Penguins also swim in cold, cold water with no worries. Right? And as we all know now from recent documentaries, they are super-dedicated. Go Pesky Penguins!

so I guess this team is now a potential winner... silently ready to sneak up on the other teams...

"Such streamlined design allows penguins to swim fast. While most cruise at about 5 miles per hour, some, such as Gentoo penguins, have been recorded blazing along at 15 miles per hour. Such bursts, often achieved by "porpoising," or repeatedly leaping out of the water, probably help penguins snag quick-moving prey and escape predators like leopard seals and killer whales. Sleek bodies also help penguins travel long distances. While most species appear to cover fewer than 60 miles in a single trip, some roam vast feeding territories. King and Emperor penguins, for instance, have been known to cover almost 1,000 miles on foraging trips that last up to a month, swimming more than 40 miles per day. Adelie penguins are believed to swim up to 3,000 miles to return to their spring nesting grounds, having spent the rest of the year roaming the drifting pack ice around Antarctica." From PBS "Nature: The World of Penguins"

We've got this thing locked.

Hm. From certain angles, I probably AM wedge-shaped....

Hasn't seemed to help much with the swimming though.

Maybe need webbed feet -- and a motor....?

Heya folks. You guys are already doing a great job!

I have another swim scheduled for tomorrow (good thing I wasn't scheduled for today because a water main burst near the pool and it was closed). Another 1650 yards and trying to doing all the good TI stuff (haven't read far enough to get to actual drills yet so just working on the principles). I think I'm scheduled for either 350 or 400 yard intervals. Can't remember and will have to look at my schedule before I head to the pool. Also get to try out my new Aquasphere Kaiman goggles (my Ironman goggles were cutting the bridge of my nose).

Today was a walk/jog day (I moved up to 10 minutes in 2 five minute spurts) with my core/upper body strength workout afterward. I figure the core work is swimming related since I'm learning from TI that swimming is motored by the core and not the arms.

Like you guys in snowier locales, I'm also contemplating having to move to the treadmill down the road (today was 39 F with a ton of wind and going around the lake with the wind whipping off the water was freezing), but since my gym only has like 5 treadmills (it's mostly meant to be a pool), I'll have to save the treadmill days for the worst of winter. I figure if I can motivate myself to get outside in the cold, that just helps prove to me that I'm committed (or maybe that I should be committed to a psych ward...who knows).

Luckily tomorrow is just a swim day since they are predicting snow. Swimming on a snowy day is so penguinesque!

Keep paddlin' penguins!

I remember saying that.... And not too long ago.

Shortly after that, I fell into a black hole. Let's call it --> "BT's Challenge Forums."

I never emerged again. But I do have lots of pretty stars.

(And, on occasion, I even find time to swim.)

I feel so lucky that where I live it's warm enough year round to run outside, rarely gets below freezing, 0C (dunno what that is in Fahrenheit), and hardly ever snows! Just about to head out for a run now.

Go penguins!!

I wanna be the penguin that goes 15 mph! Perhaps not realistic, but a girl can dream, right?

Swam last night, 1250 yards....and started working the TI - pushing the buoy concept...it's awkward, but I can see if I keep at it, my penguinesque body, is gonna fly through the water!
Every once and a while swimming just felt really easy....aaaa, gotta love it!

I can swim like a penguin! OK, maybe not really, but I am SO gonna some day!

Today will be a run day, and since there is too much snow on the roads, it's gonna have to be a treadmill, plus it's too gosh darn dark when work is done...you know, work SO gets in the way of training.....sheesh

Just keep swimming all my fellow perfect, perky, persistent, pesky penguins!

Good morning all! I finally got time to list and link you all in my training log. I've been checking up on you too, and it looks like we're off to a great start. Only 2 of our team members don't show any swim time in their logs. We'll be making our first report to the Head Head Elf this weekend, so remember to log it in so it gets counted.

Tonight's a swim night for me.

Hiya Pengiuns!

I have just been speaking to Donto and he will get an 'official' spreadsheet to you for collecting team data probably in the next 24 hours.

I will start a Team Leaders thread as well for the check in at the end of the week... the reporting week starts Sunday and it would be great if we can have all the info in by Monday Pm please!

If you forget i will be posting reminders!

Happy Swimming

Jeni,

Saw your having the same running quandry as I...the snow covered roads...have you tried running with Yak Trax on your shoes? I have the hardest time motivating myself for treadmill running...

------------------

I'm reading TI too! I wish the book was laminated though, that way I could bring it to the pool with me.

I have kinda given up on running outside for right now. I just am too much of a wuss to run in 7 degree weather like today! I'm going to give myself a running break before I start my half mary training, so I'll probably limit myself to 3-4 miles on a treadmill for now.

I ended up making copies of the drill pages to bring to the pool with me!

Hey guys, how's it going?!

Just did 800m in the pool, fairly good swim, worked on some drills. Still dead slow though. However on a positive note, I was thinking about when I first started swimming for triathlon, and I'd get to the half way point in the pool where the lifeguard sits, and think, 'oh no! I've still got 15m to go!'Made me realise how far I've come. The bad news is, I just can't get to the pool again before next monday!! ah well.

I know...! I really just started swimming last month and it is amazing the improvement I've seen so far. I can at least make it to the other end now, whereas the first time in the water I don't think I even made it a quarter of the way across!

Congrats that is a huge improvement... so much of swimming is technique and feel for the water, not just fitness. Your body has to get used to breathing on a rhythm, not just as it see's fit, and your body has to get used to moving itself through something denser than air.

Not to mention that the stroke movements for swimming do NOT come naturally to most people so its practice practice practice! But thankfully once you get a feel for it you will see the improvements come!!!

Congrats to the new swimmers. My hat is off to you guys. I can't imagine even thinking about doing a tri if I weren't already really a comfortable (albeit very rusty) swimmer.

Got a good swim in today. Did my normal 1650 total yards in intervals of 300 or 350 yards. It was alot of fun since after it got dark I could see the snow falling outside the big glass windows at the pool. I also timed each 50 yard lap for the first time. I seem to average around 1:20 per lap. I really want to get that down closer to 1 minute by the Spring.

I also did a few other laps (although I didn't count so didn't put them in my log) because when I started back swimming I couldn't swim without a nose plug so I need to work on that. As I was waiting (turns out in vain) for the hot tub to reopen after being cleaned, I worked on swimming a few laps without the nose plug and by the end I felt a lot more comfortable. I'm going to do my final interval (400 yards) on Sunday without it and see how that goes.

That's all from barely snowy Maryland (all you guys from snowier locales would be amazed at how poorly people drive with just a teeny bit of snow on the ground). Hope everyone's workout today was great (or your rest day was nice and restful)!

Hey Guys!

I didn't get a chance to post a thread after my swim last night. I got 1400 meters in! Thats my longest swim so far. I kinda cheated though

I said on my last thread that I was having trouble with my kick, and I won't be meeting with my swim coach again until friday so instead of taking the chance of messing my kick up any worse, I just used a pool buoy. Like I said, it's kind of cheating but wetsuits help you float right?

Hi team!!  I did 2000 yds last night - 1/3 of the way to my goal!!  Considering upping my goal, but not sure if I'll be getting to the pool at all the last week of December.  We'll see....

I'm still a little congested today after swimming last night.  Need a run to clear my head but today's my off day and I'm determined to follow the training schedule this month.  If I start improvising I end up not training at all.

Randy, if you're cheating using a pull buoy, then so am I. Half my swim is using one. I figure I need to learn to swim without kicking and I can assure you that pull buoy isn't hold you up as much as a wetsuit will. So you're not cheating, you're training!

I cut 4 minutes off my swimtime from Monday
