It's been a LONG time since I've posted here, but let me be one who says "YES, CF and CFE totally work to improve endurance".  I could go on and on forever about how CF and CFE impacted my tri and running performance. 

I will say though, that doing CF and CFE greatly improved my performances both speedwise and endurancewise.  I guess my two biggest points would be...

1.  Went from a 12 hour IM to a 10 hour IM in a year with just simply adding CF to my IM training plan.  No other differences.

2.  Finished a 100-mile run in the top 10% with just a marathon as my longest training run within the 12-week training plan (did a 50 miler about 18 weeks before the 100) and CF every day.

OK, the second reason I'm here today...
I came upon this on the CF site today, and it led me via a link to the CFLUMBERJACK site.  Lumberjack is the Fort Hood affiliate.

Many in the CrossFit community were affected by the tragic shootings at Fort Hood, but none as directly as one of our affiliates, Lumberjack Crossfit .  Four members of that affiliate were killed.

CrossFit is launching a hero WOD fundraiser for our four fallen Soldiers. On December 5th, we are asking affiliates and individuals to do two things: participate in the workout (as a display of solidarity with Lumberjack CrossFit) and to reach out to family, friends, and strangers to donate whatever you can.

With the help of the CrossFit community, we can assist the men and women at Ft. Hood and Lumberjack CrossFit to raise money for the families of the fallen, and the future needs of the approximately 30 wounded.

The long-term needs of these families and the wounded are significant; many of the wounded are still in intensive care. Most will not fully recover from being shot multiple times at near point blank range with a .357.

Our community clearly has the ability and commitment to make a difference for these folks. Let’s turn out on the 5th and show our support by registering as a fundraiser now.

I just started getting into the CF and CFE workouts. I have a marathon I'd like to do in May and have been thinking of switching from the standard 18 week LSD training plans to implementing CF and CFE to see if there will be a difference in speed and/or recovery and injury prevention. I get injured every time I ramp up speed and distance. Does anyone know if there is a specific CFE plan to follow for a marathon?

From the little I have read in the forums, and looking at the available videos, you're supposed to do either the main site CF or the CFE S&C workouts 4-5x a week, then supplement your sport of choice from the CFE site, correct? I have seen interval and tempo runs so far. Do they have a plan to incorporate ANY LSD runs at all to train for a marathon? If anyone knows, please advise. I probably should start this program ASAP in order to be ready by May. Thanks for any replies and sorry, I'm a newbie to CF, but so far, I LOVE IT!!

BTW, I plan on going to the CFE certification in my area. Unfortunately, the earliest one is too late if I want to do the May marathon. I'm hoping I can figure this out on my own first and hone my skill base after the cert.

Hi Jenni,

I am no CF/CFE expert as I am just getting into it myself. From what I understand of the protocol is that you try to do the CF main site WOD on the 3 on: 1 off schedule. Then if you're going to focus on one endurance sport (running), do the CFE Run WOD a minimum of 2-3x/week.

As far as training for a marathon, it looks like there are regular TT workouts where you would be running 10K & 13.1 miles. I am planning to do a Marathon in April on CF/CFE only so I might do a half marathon race in Jan/Feb and at least a 13.1 TT once a month until the race.

I don't really think there are any LSD in CF/CFE but that should stop you from doing any "social" workouts like a group run or ride.

Thanks Joe, for your input to my question. I continue to search the forums and read the journals for more marathon instruction or detail. It seems you are right, I don't see anything like the traditional LSD runs each week building then cutting back etc, nor any mid week mileage either. I just can't wrap my head around that fact that not preparing with 18-20 mile runs will work! It blows everything I thought I knew about marathon training right out of the water. You would think even a three hour run would help prepare you mentally for the challenge. But who wants to put that kind of mileage on already tired feet if it's unnecessary? Not me! I love the idea of short intense training, I just hope it's enough to get me thru 4+ hours of running! I'm going to give it a try, however, I might sneak in some 3+ hour runs once in a while, just for peace of mind. It sure would be nice to be able to run a race injury free for a change!

After reading this entire thread, I joined an affiliate about three weeks ago.  I go there 5 times/week and have seen huge gains in a short period of time.  I dropped all triathlon training for now to focus on getting stronger and leaner.  Even though I have never done it before, I found I love olympic weightlifting!

Thank you to everyone for discussing this and giving me the motivation to join the crowd!

I did Lumberjack wod on Monday while visiting an affiliate in MN...tough but fun...it was snowing and cold but opted to run instead of rowing like most folks did.

I had to scale a bunch. I separated my left shoulder in a bike crash over two years and have torn ligaments. One of the instructors who is very picky on instructing on form which I appreciate, has pointed out that my left shoulder collapses doing certain things so I need to scale things back. Doing overhead squats is tough left shoulder doesn't like to rotate back as I squat.

WOD:

Shovel your driveway for time.

Post total time taken, depth of snow and dimensions of driveway to comments.

If you do not have a driveway to shovel, shovel your neighbor's. If they ask why you are doing it, simply state you are a good neighbor and kindly ask them to 'time' you.

Alternatively you may use the following bodyweight WOD:

10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 Burpies and Sit ups.

Scaling Options:

L1 - Use a snowblower, you then must perform the bodyweight WOD

L2 - Make your kids do it. If you have none, grab a shovel.

I did Scaling Option L2 have my husband and kids do itSmile

I did ride my cyclocross bike outside in the snow with my studded snow tires, run and other stuff at the Y.

I heard the coach that does programing at our box talk about 12 days of Xmas..sounds like we may get to do it too.

That Lumberjack workout was no joke. Great stuff. I love when the workouts involve a lot of variety like that. I'm going to San Diego in a couple weeks to get my Level 1 Certification in Crossfit. I've been doing it for about year now and the benefits I've gotten from it are incredible. I've also dropped all tri training for the off season and am concentrating on get stronger and more agile through crossfit. Plus the sense of community and support at the affiliate gyms is amazing. Rock on!

Not being able to do pull ups or kipping pull ups makes me have to scale many/most wods.

Anyone have any CF goals for 2010?

Here are mine....
Crossfit goals:
1. Deadhang pull up
2. Kipping pull ups so I can do maybe ? 5-10 in a row
3. Handstand push up
4. Crossfit total over 450# (deadlift, back squat, shoulder press)
5. Do more RX workouts than not
6. Get double unders so can string them together

I have the same goals that I've had since I've started and still am nowhere close to doing.  Pull-ups and double unders.  I got semi-close with pull-ups for a while but then took a break over the summer b/c I was living out in the woods at a summer camp.  Now I'm back to square one.  Of course I was never really that close, but I only needed one of the smaller bands instead of the big thick band.  The double unders I just don't seem to have the coordination for.  I can barely jump rope though I do it almost every day! lol

if you cn't do pull ups sub for jumping pull ups and just do a few more than it requires(i'd say 2X at least if you can handle that)...As for double unders, a year and a half later I still can't do those...I just do 3X's regular jump ropes.

Hey all,

I'd like to start incorporating some Crossfit workouts into my training this year. Just looking for feedback from folks doing Crossfit & tri training. Do you typically scale your crossfit workouts? I'm concerned that crossfit workouts could leave me with too much muscle fatigue to do my regular swm/bike/run training.... How many of you do crossfit on your own (just doing the workouts in a regular old gym - not a crossfit gym)?

I see today's WOD calls for muscle-ups. If you don't have access to rings, would a combination of pull-ups & dips work okay as a substitute?

On main site they have a link to scale all the workouts.

Often folks do workouts a day or two behind so they can adjust things and figure out it before they do the wod.

I'm a big advocate of joining a CF affiliate.  You will learn how to do things correctly including Olympic lifting and proper form in all things. As a triathlete we do most of our training solitary. Being with like minded supportive athletes I find invigorating.

How to fit CF into tri training is a struggle as I get sore a lot but less than I did when I started. I do my hardest work outs during the day before CF so I'm fresh for my bike intervals and they are far apart from CF as possible.

Right now I'm running 4x, cycling 3x, swimming 3-4x, and cross fit 3x a week. I don't work but it can mean 3 workouts a day like today....swam, doing bike intervals soon then CF tonight.

I used to do CF first thing in am which made any tri training challenging during the day. Doing CF last and tri training first works better for me. I seem to be able to run and swim better when being sore from CF but not bike probably since right now I'm focused on increasing my FTP so almost all my bikes are challenging.
