Wednesday weigh in: Still holding at 8 with 2 weeks to go

Swim at the Y and a 2 mile run on the schedule for this afternoon

Wednesday weigh in - was down from 11 to 8 this morning... after lunch and a workout I'm back at 10. Too much snacking.

Allison - I hope you feel better soon!

Swim at the Y and a 2 mile run on the schedule for this afternoon

Started at 11, last week at 10, this week at 8.  My eating has been good, and most importantly for me, I'm down in body fat (I have a Tanita scale).

I videotaped myself swimming for the first time ever - it was enlightening!  I though I had a good stroke...looks like I have some work to do.  My body position, head, and arm stroke are solid (though I'm not completely finishing my stroke - that's easily fixed though).  The glaring item was that my legs are swaying back and forth a lot - not very hydrodynamic.  I look like an eel!  Anywho, it's good that I know now so I can try to fix it.

LOL    I'll see what I can do - I would need to convert from tape (old camcorder) to something digital.

VIDEO, VIDEO, VIDEO!!

Again...I'm down in Chesapeake, VA and don't have a scale.  I can imagine I am back up to initial weight though, because I have had little will power with respect to all the snacks that they put out at this training...oh and all the coffee with cream I have had to drink to stay awake!

Very depressed today!

I've been feeling great the last month. Training slowly with no pain or actually no added pain in my back. I've been on cloud nine with my progress.

Well, today (took the day off training due to my daughter driving up here from Napa to visit) I was getting ready to go out with her for lunch and I was putting my shoes on. I bent over to tie them and it felt like someone shot me in the lower left part of my back. It brought me to my knees! Hopefully it is minor and I'll be back up and at it soon.

It's like a damn roller coaster! I haven't been over doing it at all. This just came out of the blue. I'll get over like the other times, but it's just depressing and makes me question why I'm doing this. I won't give up!!!!

I can sympathize better than you know.  For the entire decade of my 30s I was basically incapacitated by lower back pain.  These days I'm doing pretty well since my disc has degenerated to the point that it doesn't bulge/squirt anymore.

It hurt like crazy, but the fastest way for me to get over it was to ignore it and move.  The super powerful narcotic pain meds were actually worth it because they could allow me to get up and begin moving.

Oh I hate to read this. I know exactly how you feel. That feeling where you just want to be healthy and be free to do what you want (fitness wise). I just had a mental breakdown last night. Just fed up dealing with the aches and pains that are keeping me from doing what I love. I will say a prayer for you tonight.

I'm going to pay for today I'm sure. The weather here is unusually pleasant. 60 degrees and not even windy. I couldn't take it anymore. I was out walking my dog and just thought I've had enough. I want to run. I have not been running because I'm trying to let my back heal but screw it. Today I couldn't take it anymore. I walked the dog back home (she is old and can not keep up), put on my running shoes and ran 2 miles.

It felt sooooo good. Mentally I really needed that. Just to know that I still can. I hope I didn't set myself back too much. I just want to be well.

Man, this is the EXACT attitude that everyone should have.  Never give up.  Do what you can to train right and be healthy, but sometimes the world throws a stick in your spokes (or a water bottle in the road and you crash over it in your HIM...but whatever) and you HAVE to keep a positive attitude and push forward.  I hope this is not a big deal and that you just tweaked it for a second.  Make sure you ice or do what the doctor orders!

I hear you Dina.  And I'm the last person to tell you not to do that.  Just take it easy, okay?  I think today you probably DID listen to your body.  It needed to be released a bit.  And honestly...as long as you are smart, I'm not going to say don't.  Then again, I'm no doctor.  You have to do what's best for you mentally and physically.  I hope your back also gets better soon.

Stan, take it easy for a little bit and then you'll be able to get back up and begin again.  Remember it's most likely not the training you have been doing that triggered the pain coming back.  Maybe it will be as you said, a minor thing and you'll be back sooner than you think.

It's to bad these type of things happen but hang in there.  You can't give up yet.

I had the same thoughts.  You were only supposed to take it easy for a weekend anyway, right?  Maybe I missed something but if you feel alright come back to the running slowly, just as you did today.

Sorry to hear about your back, I was having some back issues and found a great chiropractor to help, he uses a tool to gently work things back into place, sort of like a jack hammer and it is not painful, no more cranking on my body! Hope you feel better soon.

Stan - That's tough, but you have the right attitude.  It's never easy, so we may as well accept the storms and move on.  But it's especially nasty to have to deal with things when you were doing everything right. Solder on.

Dina, sometimes you just have to let the big dogs out of the barn!  Hopefully you are ok after your run, but I think it's ok to air it out occasionally, as long as you are extra attentive to your body during and after.  and the mental thing is big too.

Jonathan- That crash wasn't so bad. Just get up and and finish please.   Actually folks, if you get a chance go read Jonanthan's race report from the Timberman Half.  Absolutely nuts.  I question his sanity, though not his toughness, after reading it.

Great job everyone on the weight challenge.  Hopefully we'll all make it - 2 more weeks.

Well, the verdict is in. My back actually feels better today (which I think is very strange). The foot I've been struggling with tendonitis in is not happy.

So, one out two isn't too bad .

Thanks for the encouragement everyone!

Good on the back!  Bad on the foot!

With only probably 2 exceptions over the last 25 years...my back pain was improved by running.  I think the rhythmic contraction of the lower back muscles (left, right, left, right....) helps to work inflammation out of the area.

Good luck with the foot.  Tendinitis is best treated by ice.  And as long as it's more than a few days old, heat too.  I like to alternate them both for fastest healing.  Is this a tendon on the top of the foot?

Jeff - this is the tibialis posterior tendon. I've been dealing with this pain on and off for almost a year now. I guess I need to see a orthopedic foot and ankle person but it is a 2 hour drive just to get there.

For the back issues Jeff, I agree with the idea you're talking about but I'll go a little bit farther.  I think many back issues may very well be attributed to a weak core.  That is not to say that strengthening the core will "fix" the problem but if the core weren't allowed to atrophy the way many people allow there wouldn't be as many issues as what we see.  Obviously there are other causes to back issues from a person that has maintained a normally strong core such as bad lifting techniques but as you look around you in any public place you see people that are very out of shape and this is a major contributor.

The tendinitis?  Same opinion.  R.I.C.E oh and some ibuprofen too.
