I'm not too good at the physics stuff.

The math comes from having to do it. A lot. Mostly algebra stuff (not real hard to just plug the values into the formula), but over the years I developed a couple "shortcuts" to do it in my head. That drives people nuts.

We were trying to calculate the radius of a curve (we were doing simple surveying to determine trafficability of a route), and one guy had a calculator. It was driving him nuts that I could do most of the equations in my head faster than he could with the idiot box.

I'll bet you've memorized a lot of approximations... a lot of the physicists that worked on the Manhattan Project did that in their youth. People would freak but it would be nothing more than knowing squares, square roots, etc. up to about the number 50 or so - no different than multiplication tables.

Possibly. That, plus I'm pretty good at breaking down a complex number into easier to manipulate ones. Also, when it comes to decimals and lots of places, I don't carry it out to quite the same level of precision.
