I like to eat cottage cheese about an hour before bed.  Cottage cheese (organic) is very high in casein protein which takes the body several hours to digest.  As a result, the body gets a sustained source of amino acids throughout the night.

That's another good one!!  I will add peaches to that if it's not to late in the day for the glycemic spike

Been busy as %$^& at work this week working overtime so haven't had much read and post time.  Did a 5K hard paced (for me) run last night.  I think I now prefer to run long and slow to short and fast I just feel beter after the run.  I coughed for 3 hours after that run.

A hard effort like that I'm thinking is nessissary every now and then if I ever plan to get my pace faster.

This afternoon should be a Leg workout at the gym...

LOL...you get used to that the more you do it.  You won't feel so bad after a while.  I tend to have good intentions on slowing down but then my OCD kicks in.  I start crunching numbers in my head as I look at my gps and then start rationalizing beating or matching previous times.  This adds waaaaay too much intensity to my workouts too consistently.  I do think a good intense run/bike is needed once every week or two in order to keep you used to those levels for the races though.

KidIcarus - 2010-04-27 8:13 AM so im curious as to everyone's opinion on my situation.  i could really use the input:

i just bought my bike a few weeks ago.  rode it a few times but didn't push it because i could tell i needed to get it fit since it didn't feel right at all.  i went and got my fitting done last week, then went out for a 75mins (25 miles) ride.  left knee was pretty sore the following day.  so my question is this:  is that NORMAL for a beginner cyclist?  would anyone experience something similar?  or do you think its more indicative of either my fittings being off (the fitter told me afterward that if i had any ankle or knee weirdness to call him and bring the bike back to get tweaked, so it must happen on occasion, right?) or my knee maybe just having a bad attitude? =P

I started taking spin classes two months ago, bc although I didn't have a bike, I knew I needed to start building bike muscles.  I had NEVER had a single day of knee soreness before.  Once I started to spin 5 days a week, it would get a little tender, but nothing that persisted or gave me much trouble.

Just curious if anyone has had a similar issue or have heard something like this from anyone else during their time here.  I just can't afford to lose any training time and need to address this properly and immediately.  Thanks guys!

I have been amazed how cleat position affects you joints.

Fore/aft, rotated, etc.

Small difference may not seem like much, but rotating 100*minute&75minutes,= 7500 rotations.  Small twists can hurt with much repitition.

I agree with others, that some might be "newness", but I would ensure cleat position is correct.  You could touch base with the fitter...

JMHO

I had various aches & pains last summer & found a small change in cleat position, changed things drastically!

I'm a little late this conversation, but I had knee pain after I changed to Speedplay clipless pedals. Went in the next day, changed to Look Keo's and no more knee pain.

I would certainly look at which pedals your using and if they're right for you.

this is very strange.  9 times out of 10 people are moving to speedplay because they are having knee problems with other brands.  Speedplay has more float and allow you to spin more naturally if you need more float than other brands give.  Is it possible the position of the cleat changed when you changed the pedals?  Just sayin'....if anything the speedplays should help with knee pain.

This works great.  I did it for the first time today during my OWS.  The GPS tracked spot-on.  Very pleased to have a way to get accurate numbers on my OWS now.

x2 have a friend who only uses speedplay NOW, after starting cycling and having knee pain.

though in trina's case, if she can cycle without pain, then who really cares whether its the brand or cleat position.

im still not sold on my knee being 100%.  ive run twice on it this week, and although its pain free, it still has a strange 'not right' feeling.  almost feels like there's instability to the left and right, that i could bend my knee not just backwards, but side to side.  lol  im sure this sounds absurd.

i haven't been on my bike since last wednesday.  as much as its killing me to be doing this little activity this week (except today, as ive come down with a cold or something so i wouldn't be exercising anyway), i have IMAZ in Nov and my 20-week training plan doesn't start for two more months. id MUCH rather have the time-off now, than inside that window.

ill keep everyone updated, though i suspect the very next time i get on the bike its going to be sore after.  i hope im dead wrong.  will probably find out saturday.

Tim, you seem to know quite a bit about the bike, can you provide some info on cassettes, i.e. a 25-12, refers to the # of teeth or something?  And what about wheel types.  I was thinking about getting some 'cheap' everyday trainers, but don't really know what benefit it will provide over the wheels that came w/ my bike.  I have aluminum mavic aksium wheels, looking at easton EA 70s .  Or would I be better picking up something used from another rider that may have only used something for 1 season?  I posed this to Tim, but anyone can throw in an answer.

IMO those Mavic Aksiums are just as good as any for everyday trainer.  I'd save the $$$ and buy some nice race wheels later.  Save the Aksiums for everyday use.

For a 25-12 cassette 25 teeth is the big ring and 12 will be the small.

Here's some of your typical gears offerred by SRAM:

  • 11-23 : 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19, 21, 23
  • 11-25 : 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25
  • 11-26 : 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17, 19, 21, 23, 26
  • 11-28 : 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 19, 22, 25, 28
  • These numbers refer to teeth.  An 11-28 would be more suited for hilly, steep terrain.  Whereas, you could swap over to an 11-23 to give you more top end choices on flat terrain.  Those are the extremes with the other combinations lying in the middle.

As for a second set of wheels, most people will use two sets when they have expensive race wheels.  They want to keep wear and tear off these wheels and keep them pristine for race day.  When you have $2K-3k invested in race wheels, you don't really want to take the chance of damaging them on training rides.

Using this rationale, how much money are you saving by adding to your current wheelset?  Or, are you better off just training and racing on your current set?  On my tt bike, I have Mavic Krysium Elites that I use as my race and training wheels.  But, on my MTB, where I have a substantial amount of money invested in my race wheels, I do use a pricepoint wheelset for everyday training.

Hope that helps.  If not, ask away....

Yeah, that does help, thanks.  I understand the idea behind getting an expensive set of race wheels, and I'm a long way from that point. I was more wondering if there would be any benefit to getting a wheelset that is just a fe hundred more than what I currently have.  I have no problems w/ the wheels currently on the bike, just adding to the info banks.

Went to the gym and did 20 minutes on the eliptical and then a leg workout. Hope next week to be able to ride the bike again.. Until then its running and GYm.

I'd just be super careful not to push too much with knee pain. Have you saw a sport's medicine doc/orthopedist? Any time I feel pain I'm picking up the phone to call either my doc, or the bike shop.

In my opinion, swimming is very frustrating.  I've noticed that I will stay consitent as far speed for a period of time, usually a long period.  Then all of a sudden, I'll have a break through moment where I find myself faster.  I might even have an occasional phase of regression despite keeping volume constant.  Errrr... who decided swimming should be part of a triathlon?

    LOL...too true!!!

I actually really enjoy swimming.  But only after I've jumped in and started.  It's really one of my biggest training problems mentally.  I hate driving to the pool and jumping into the cold water!  It's such an effort compared to opening the garage door and heading off on the bike or putting shoes on and going for a run.  I'm admittedly a little OCD as well.  If I plan on going to the gym at a set time and getting an hour of swimming in to be home at a set time my anxiety levels shoot through the roof when I have to sit and wait for a lane. LOL

I personally don't like a lot float in my pedals.  And, as you mentioned, I like the bigger platforms of the Keos.

Let me throw out another scenario for the knee pain.  I sometimes will develop lateral knee soreness, more so on my left knee.  I have found this seems to occur after a ride where I broke down and started mashing the pedals.  By mashing, I'm talking about lower cadence in bigger gears.  This puts a lot of stress on legs, knees, etc.

If this sounds familar, think smooth circles with the pedals and keep the cadence up.

10, no.  8/9 maybe, but at what cost.  At a minimum, new shifters, derailleur, and cassette.

    From Sheldon Brown:

A frequent reason for body transplantation is to convert a 6- or 7-speed Freehub to use 8-/9-/10-speed cassettes. This generally will increase the over-locknut dimension. As a result you will usually need to re-dish the wheel after doing this upgrade.

6- and 7-speed hubs generally use 126 mm spacing, while 8-/9-speed hubs use 130 mm (road) or 135 mm (MTB/Hybrid).

Some folks will tell you that you also need to install a longer axle when doing this, but that's not correct. Typical rear QR axles are 11 mm longer than the over-locknut dimension of the hub, so there's 5.5 mm of axle sticking out past the locknuts. That's way more than is actually needed. If you are converting a 126 mm OLD 7-speed Freehub (137 mm axle length) to 8 or more speeds, the OLD goes to 130 mm. That will leave you 3.5 mm of protrusion on each side, once you move the right cone over to even things out. That's plenty.

In fact, no protrusion is truly necessary, but it's a convenience in wheel installation to have some protrusion. I once set up a bike with zero protrusion, where the axle was flush with the locknuts. (This was a fixed-gear with vertical dropouts, and I did it to give me a bit more chain tension adjustability.) I put a lot of hard miles on that bike; it never gave me a lick of trouble.

If you do re-space your hub, you'll also need to re-dish your wheel, because the extra space will all be added on the right side by installing the wider Freehub body. You'll need to tighten spokes on the right, possibly also loosen some on the left, to move the rim 2 mm to the right so that it will once again be centered in the frame.

In going to a wider hub spacing, you'll also need to deal with the frame spacing, but this is not as difficult as you might suppose.
