Thanks for the encouragement everyone! Woohoo!! This is great news! Now for Debbie Downer....REMEMBER, this doesn't mean go out and run 5 miles fast like an idiot. Because that's probably what I would have done and it's NOT a good idea. Keep up the great work!!!
Dirk, try not to cry during the swim meet, okay? The girl doesn't need you as a distraction! :-) |

The foot I've been struggling with tendonitis in is not happy. So, one out two isn't too bad Thanks for the encouragement everyone! That's good news and I totally agree with everything said about back and core strength. Even just a few minutes of planks can really make a difference. Remember when looking at core exercises that the function of the core is stabilization, not bending your shoulders up. I guess that's my way to say I don't think sit ups are a good core exercise! And I think you're on track seeing someone if that foot has bothered you for a year. All chronic injuries should probably warrant at least a consult visit.
DirkP - 2012-02-02 4:56 PM Well I had my quick check in. I am now off to the beginning of the end of Laiken's last swim meet. Her sectional meet starts tonight and ends Saturday. Wow, I bet you were just bringing her home from the hospital yesterday. No matter how many times we hear they grow up fast, it doesn't sink in until you see it before your eyes. Good luck to her, and good luck to mom and dad. And she can start the swim lessons once the season is over! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So I think 12 hours of meeting's in less than 2 days have finally taken its toll. I believe I literally pulled a muscle or something sitting in my chair. Afternoon meeting was dragging and I was getting antsy, I moved my foot and my heel hit the floor and a pain shot up the back of my leg into my calf. For the rest of the day the back of my lower leg was stiff and it actually hurt to flex my ankle. Of course that didn't stop me from running after work, and it continued to be stiff for the 1st 0.5 miles before loosening up for the rest of the run. Now as I sit here updating the logs I can feel it tightening up again! Who knew the plastics industry could be so grueling! |

Bored much? mambos - 2012-02-02 8:11 PM Who knew the plastics industry could be so grueling! I work in the hospitality industry and there's nothing hospitable about it. At least the plastics industry is living up to its name and making you feel like plastic! On a personal note, I got an easy six miles in today - we our second amazing day in a row - 50 degrees and sunny. I got to run in a t-shirt for the first time since November. It was AWESOME!!! I may try swimming for the first time since Monday tomorrow, although I have a little bit of a sore shoulder so if it feels bad when I wake up I'll skip it. It was getting a little painful today when I was running too. If anyone has ever experienced that, I'd appreciate any advice! Have a nice evening everyone! J |

In the words of my teenager - that was random. haha....the sherpa? Yeah, I ran down the hall to get my laundry out of the washer...it's a super long hallway, but the carpet is nice and soft, so running barefoot was cool. But then running back down there, I tweaked my achilles a bit and said screw that! Finally got some sort of a swim workout in tonight. A short 2 mile run as well. Looking forward to going home tomorrow night. Long bike ride on Saturday morning on the trainer. Man...that's gonna hurt like heck. GONNA LOVE IT!!!! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() John, we have been having some pretty amazing weather here too. A couple of days in the upper 40's and sunny and even a day in the low 50's. They say we are going to have a couple of more days of mid 40's and I'll take it. Right now it is the warmer temps and a sandwich bag that are keeping my cold weather runs alive. Since my Garmin 305 battery is dying I am using the baggy to wrap around my arm and hold the heat in allowing a little longer battery time.........So far so good. |

Up until now I have been riding a road bike and I think it is time for a tri bike. Still a roadie for me. I do have clip-ons to go with it but a tri bike is not in the budget for a while. I would recommend a tri bike if you can afford it but I would also keep the roadie for doing group rides, if you do them. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I guess that's my concern, how expensive they are. Unfortunate I lost about a year of training after my mom died, just couldn't get it together and now I am trying to qualify for Kona for my fiftieth although I will be happy just to finish. So I am looking for any way to cut my time possible, so I am not sure if the possible time saved is worth the expense. Good luck to your daughter tomorrow.....it is always hard, but it is so much fun to watch when they grow into great people. |

J I don't know much about shoulder pain while running, but are you totally relaxing everything while you run? It takes a lot of discipline to keep everything relaxed and not tight, but it's worth it. This has been a big focus for me all winter, and if I don't think about it I still tighten various parts of my upper body without really thinking about it. And we've also had ridiculous weather up here in New England pretty much all winter. Our biggest snow storm so far was in October! |

Good luck to your daughter tomorrow.....it is always hard, but it is so much fun to watch when they grow into great people. I ride a roadie with clip ons. In truth, so much of my riding is in hills that I will never give it up, but I'd love to have a tri bike. The finance committee isn't going for it though. She insists on putting all our "extra" money into silly things like college tuition and such. I'd opt for community college and a Felt! I know it's all about the engine, but it seems like almost everyone ahead of me on the bike leg of my races is on some cool space age TT bike, Jonathan being a prime example. His ride looks like it's hauling when it's racked. Good luck with the decision. It's always a personal thing, but there's no doubt unless you are racing extremely hilly routes you'll get some significant time with a properly fit tri bike. Don't skimp on the fitting though. (The Felt comment was a joke - I'd actually like a Cervelo!). |

![]() I feel so sorry for all you in pain out there. It's an awful feeling. Stan - are you able to move around any better? Dina, glad you got a run in and hope you can find some relief for your tendonitis. Warren makes a good point, John, about relaxing while running so maybe your shoulder pain is from being too tight/stiff. That's happened to me before but I've felt it in my neck area. Did the Dr. put you on antibiotics, Allison? JoAnne - I've had a roadie for 6 years that, like Dirk and Warren, I added aerobars but I recently got a used Cervelo P3C. I'm getting it customized (pictures will come later) so I haven't ridden it yet, but I got it because my sweet hubby gave me the funds for a present. I just think a tri bike is a thing of beauty so he was tired of me talking about them. ![]() ![]() Dirk - where's your daughter's meet? Warsaw girls swim team hosted one last evening and there were tons of buses and cars packing the lot. Good luck to her tomorrow. My daughter has her final basketball game tomorrow, too, but she's only a freshmen so there'll be more to come. Oh, on the weigh-in. Again, about the same which for me at this time of year is actually a gain, so I'm staying positive. |

If you are trying to qualify for Kona I think a tri bike is a most definite YES!!!!! I think it's highly likely that you would pick up a ton of time on the bike using a properly fit TT bike. But as Warren says, there is a lot to be said about the engine. you can have a Ferrari body but a 4 cylinder under the hood makes it a Chevette. And Warren. Poor, poor Warren! How can I put this gently? Cervelo??? Really? Specialized SHIV!!!! That's all I can say! Hey, if your going to put a bike together why not make it the best. And yes! This is my dream so don't wake me! |

![]() Jo63 - 2012-02-03 6:08 AM What type of bike does everyone have? Up until now I have been riding a road bike and I think it is time for a tri bike. I like bikes. I have a giant hybrid which I rode for 7 years. I used to live near a rails to trails system which had a pea gravel mulit purpose path so the hybrid was a good fit for that type of riding. We moved to farm country and now I am surrounded by miles and miles of flat country roads. The hybrid sucks in the wind so I bought a road bike. This is what I rode for my first 10 triathlons. It was fine. I have clip ons, I was making gains in speed over time. I just had to work A LOT harder than my friends who have all the fancy stuff. I know I was working harder because they post everything on facebook. I don't mind working hard but I kept wondering how much improvement I would make if I continued working hard AND had a tri bike. So I started saving from the little bit of money I earn teaching at the Y (we're talking 30 bucks a pay periode) and birthday or Christmas money. Then one day we were on the boat with our kids. My daughter started having the screaming fit of the century (she was 2). My husband was about to lose it. He told me "If you can get her quiet I'll pay you $1,000." I put my daughter in my lap and she fell asleep. Now I have a tri bike Sorry, got kind of carried away with the stories. That is the long version I guess |

Again, about the same which for me at this time of year is actually a gain, so I'm staying positive. Her meet is in FW. I should say she did very well last night and dropped some ridiculous times in my opinion, although not the fastest at all. She was very close to setting another PR in both of her individual events. Her 200 free was at 2:12.21 and seeded 8th for the finals (she moved up either 2 or 3 spots) and her 500 was at 5:59.01 (seeded 10th in the prelims and stayed 10th for the finals). I am planning on posting pics to facebook after my ride today and you can see them there. (BTW, if any of you have FB you may friend me if you like.) (It's easier to post pics there but I'll try to get a couple up here sometime too.) |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() trigal38 - 2012-02-02 3:10 PM Jeff - this is the tibialis posterior tendon. I've been dealing with this pain on and off for almost a year now. I guess I need to see a orthopedic foot and ankle person but it is a 2 hour drive just to get there.
Stink! That's a pesky injury. I suspect that this is what sidelined my daughter recently even though the Dr. diagnosed it as a bone injury it didn't act like one.. In my days as a serious runner back in the 80s I don't ever remember anyone having this injury, but suddenly I've been hearing about it affect a lot of people. Perhaps it's just because of the internet era and the large number of triathletes I'm exposed to here on the board. This link seems to have really good information about the injury, it's causes and it's treatment. http://www.sportsinjurybulletin.com/archive/tibialis-tendinitis.html

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 2:12 for 200!?.....good GOLLY that is fast!!!JoAnne, to answer your question, I have a tri bike that fits. In my opinion you should buy the best bike you can given your budget. First thing you want to do is find a bike fitter that will do a "new bike fit" for a tri bike position. If you need help finding a fitter in your area I am sure we can help! There are a ton of companies that build great bikes. If you can afford it I would definitely look for a carbon frame bike. They are far more comfortable and forgiving. If I didn't answer all of your questions please ask! |
