D001 - 2009-06-01 11:12 AM So. When you run, which muscles are you supposed to feel it in? (Assuming you have good technique, that is.) Is it more the hamstrings, glutes or quads?

A combo of all three....

Also depends on which muscles in the chain are stronger.....

Good question...i feel it in my calfs first, maybe I have bad form?

Calves and achilles tend to be the muscles that have the most trouble adapting when you first start running so make sure you stretch them regularly and keep and eye on them.

Make sure you are not landing on your tip toes or right back on your heels as this puts the most impact on them...

Most beginner runners however get tight calves and achilles... the trick is to stretch them and to NOT increase the distances too quickly

Hey all! It seems I survived my first full week of training, and I'm still feeling good and motivated.  Of course, it probably doesn't hurt that this week is a mini-taper week. We have our 72 mile ride around Lake Tahoe on Saturday, so I'm going to cut back a bit later this week.

It has also really helped me to have a handy list of my daily and weekly goals. That way, I can mentally prepare myself a lot easier than "winging it."

How was everyone's weekend?

Thanks, Cat!

Of course, you're assuming that I can breathe and chew gum at the same time....

I can just imagine what would happen if I tried to be online while on the bike.... I'd probably end up dropping the computer on the floor, and needing to go out and buy a new one!

Well get a spare keyboad hooked up to the computer which you leave on the table where you can see it...

THEN... get some cable ties to attached you keyboard to the handlebars and VOILA!!!

The computer is out of range for getting damaged but yuo can interact with BT while working out!

Hello there fellow mentees.  I haven't had alot of time to post, but I've been keeping the blog up to date.  Not many workouts going in there, but they are up to date none the less.  I ordered a new bike seat last night, so I'm hoping to be able to ride more miles soon.  I get pretty uncomfortable by 20 miles, so my rides don't tend to stray far from that mark.  Should start swimming more here in the next few weeks.  The hubby will be gone for a month later in the summer, so that will get me lots of yardage in the pool since I can swim on my lunch break.  Well, gotta get back to work.  Looks like everyone is doing well...I'm  trying to keep up with blogs and inspires

I know I'm a little late getting this in, but I wanted to share my goals for June.  Mainly, I'm trying to do the Peach Challenge, which means I have to do SOMETHING every day. That'll probably be the best way to get me to do at least one core workout a week!

I'd like to include a weight-loss goal, but I haven't been very successful with those, and I'd rather not continue to frustrate myself. So, I'm going to stick with my weekly-cleanish-eating plan instead, and just hope that I can get on the downward side of things.

I made a goal of setting a PR at my Oly in early August. So, that alone is really getting me and my buttinski out for my training runs and rides. Swimming is still my sore point. I left another message for my swimming coach this afternoon, and hope that I can connect with her soon. But even if I don't, I want to start getting in at least two swims a week.

So, here are my actual goals for June:
- continue following my modified training plan
- do some kind of workout every day
- continue with my eating plan
- swim 2x a week (4.5 weeks in June = 9 swims for the month)

Nice to hear from you! I hope the new seat does the trick... I went through several on my old bike to find one a I liked... on the new bike Im yet to make a judgement call but so far the new seat seems to be doing the trick for me!

Its such a personal thing - I hope your search goes well!

Great goals! I havent written any down for June yet so you are WAY ahead of me right now!!! Sounds like you have got a nice balance of things yuo want to achieve and hopefully the peach challenge will help you stick with it!

Way to go!

anyone hear from Shawn and know if he is OK or not??  That must have been a bummer getting hurt right before your first race.

I remember my first, and I had to walk the run, cause i strained my left calf the week before the race from running too fast too soon and could not physically run, that sucked!!!

Okay!

So, i have my first race this weekend. V. nervous. Going over the checklists, getting stuff together, and making sure I have directions, etc. Doing a Swim/Run brick this morning and then nothing else to do but wait for Sat.

So, here is my question, and it is kind of a kooky one, and mainly for the girls: I get some thigh chafing when I run longer distances, and sometimes from the bike. Mostly from the run, though. I have found that it has gotten worse this summer, and I think it is because in the summer I shave and then the regrowth is what gives me the terrible chafing.

Does anyone else get this? What do you do? Waxing? Suck it up and look like a Wookie at the pool? I have decided that between now and Sat. I am just going to suck it up. But moving forward for the summer, I would like to find a solution.

Thanks! (And sorry you guys had to read this chick stuff.)

Not a kooky question at all!  Everyone is so different, and it takes awhile to figure out what works.  For me, I don't shave any part of my legs under my bike shorts.  What little is there, is too blond to notice.  As far as the bikini line, I skip shaving that on the day of a swim or long bike.  I know that material is going to rub, so I like to let it relax for a day.  It's hard in the summer because it seems like we bike or swim everyday.  For this weekend, I would shave Fri. in the a.m. and let it go from there.  Remember, no one can see thru your bike shorts
