Champion 6225 | Subject: RE: Ghoulie March (STILL BIKING) Madness!!! ANN. re CALF CRAMPS. i struggle something fierce, though ive done somethings that have proven very helpful so i get them less often. 1) im VERY mindful to stretch, before during and after. keep in mind (i didnt know this until one of the person trainers told me) theres an outside and inside calf muscle so when you stretch make sure youre getting both sides. just do an ordinary calf stretch and turn your foot to the right and left slightly that will get both sides. 2) SALT. i used to down bananas thinking potassium was the issue, but for me its salt. i make sure that i take in some form of salty snack - pretzels, peanuts, even Coke Zero - before and after a workout. that staves them off. 3) G2 OR GATORADE. i drink G2/GATORADE instead of water before/during/after all my workouts. G2 is for lighter, not as long workouts. GATORADE i drink for longer, harder workouts. 4) GATORADE before bed. i would have HORRIBLE night calf cramps. drinking some GATORADE before i go to bed seems to really help me. 5) COMPRESSION SOCKS. ive gotten myself a pair and i wear them after my spins/rides and DURING my runs and honestly, anytime that my calfs feel 'fatigued' i keep them on for a few hours take them off see how my legs feel if they feel 'back to normal' then i take them off, if not, then i just keep wearing them until my calves feel recovered. 6) SUCCEED CAPSULES. these are electrolytes in a capsule. i take them during a long, hard work out. http://www.succeedscaps.com/main_scaps.html i personally think i have a 'chronic' electrolyte depletion/imbalance. ive never had this verified w blood tests (though it would be easy to have done....) but what ive been doing on my own seems to be working. just a few suggestions. stacieb Edited by skrtrnr 2010-03-31 9:30 AM |

Since I've started watching what I eat and not eating junk I don't salt anything. Maybe in moderation on some things now wouldn't hurt. I have only been wearing my compression socks after runs, but there have been some days I thought about it after swims or bike rides. I will have to try that, too. I should have had something before bed last night. I knew I was going to cramp up, and I did. |

I should have had something before bed last night. I knew I was going to cramp up, and I did. re salting food. i went to a runners clinic and they were doing one on sports nutrition. though the average person doesnt require extra salt, the average athlete and ESPECIALLY the endurance athlete does. the sports nutritionist giving the presentation (who happens to be the sports nutritionist 'consult' for Runners World magazine....) suggested that athletes go ahead and salt their food in 'moderation' as a means to get in their daily sodium requirements. so id say salt away. and definately try GATORADE before bed. theyve done A LOT to stave off my night calf cramps. THEY HURT LIKE A M-O-T-H you know what. stacieb Edited by skrtrnr 2010-03-31 11:01 AM |

I decided to try their pool tonight, since in my experience the Y is pretty crowded later in the evenings. IT WAS WONDERFUL! Nice big new locker room ALL TO MYSELF! New 8 lane 25 yard lap pool ALL TO MYSELF! The pool was nice. I wish I could have shared it will all of you. I know I wouldn't have been alone then, but I know you guys wouldn't have ruined the mojo. I think I'll be going there a lot more. That sounds awesome - I need to check the local college here also to see how crowded it is - the Y is getting $$ and I don't use it all summer because of commuting! I've thought of stopping my Y membership for the summer. The kids aren't taking any classes, and the only thing I use it for now is the pool. I can take the kids to the college to swim. The only downside to the college pool is their limited hours. I'm not sure what I'll do yet. Ann(e) - don't they jab for the initiation fee again though? Yes, they probably would. They frequently have months though where if you join between such and such a date they waive the fee. |

Hopefully your REI has a decent Tri section now that summer is approaching. The REI near my place has a decent amount of tops and shorts, but then again there are a LOT of triathletes around here. Good luck! |

Can't speak for everyone, but this Ghoulie had a meeting with an applicant this morning that was actually very productive. He's another SEAL wannabe and one of his issues is getting access to a decent pool that's near a place he can run. Short story, I'll be taking him to the pool this Friday, and hopefully weekly, to hook him up. I'm also hoping some of his speed will rub off on me! I also talked with the Executive Officer of the EOD Training Unit over here while drinking coffee this morning. He showed up to Starbucks on his bike and I struck up a conversation with him. I ended up getting invited to join his riding club on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, which is pretty awesome! I just hope I can hang with them, because they're all pretty bad-azz dudes.
