Don't they put a mark or something on your race number if you are caught committing a penalty? That would be the only reason I can see needing it.  I am using the myathletelive.com GPS device so I am wearing a belt anyways.

Experior - 2012-08-27 2:36 PM #2193, here.  I also just noticed that we are supposed to wear them on the bike.  Yuck.  I hate wearing a race belt on the bike.

I never understood that rule.  I guess it's just one more way to catch your number to give you a penalty.  :-/

In case they can't see the number on the sticker on your helmet, or the sticker on your bike, or the other sticker on your bike, or the sticker on the other side of your bike, or the permanent ink on your arm, or on your other arm, or on your leg.

Yes. They also have allergy and medical info on the back. Race belts don't bother me at all, but it does all seem like a bit of overkill.

It would be pretty simple to use the bike number for this.  Oh well.  I hate spending so much time and effort on aero sleekness and then race with a number flapping around behind me.  It's more psychological than anything but then again IM is very psychological (or is that supposed to be 'psycho'?).

Good luck to everyone!

Does anyone recall how quickly this sold out last year for this year's race? It's high on my list for 2013, but would like to have some idea of if it sells out same day, or if it takes a few weeks...or longer!

Thanks!

Umm I believe it took a few days but maybe only a day.  But not too long and I think it also depends on the year.  Some years it has sold out in a few hours so if you want to do Wisconsin I'd suggest signing up that day just to be sure.

I've reg'd online 3x.  Each time I did it by being ready to go as soon as online registration began.  I'm not sure how long it took to sell out, but it was pretty quick.  I've also heard people say they tried the same approach I used with no joy.  So possible I just got lucky.

Not to keep you from registering first thing that sucker goes online, but lots of IM races this year are not selling out immediately, IMCDA, IMLou, IMTX are all open for registration and IMLT just sold out today.

Hwy 92 is open, kind of, mostly.  The road crew was taking down all the construction signs and finishing up the detail stuff on the bridge.  I talked to one of the road crew and I was told it would officially be open this afternoon, he was pretty sure.

I signed up online last year and it took 4 or 5 hours I believe to fill up.  I've heard in the past that it's gone as fast as 30 minutes.

As was mentioned though some are not selling out as quickly this year, so who knows.

I went to volunteer last year to make sure that I got a spot to participate this year.  I was not about to leave it to chance.  As such, I kept an eye on how quickly it filled up and it appeared to fill up the next morning.  So registration lasted a little over 24 hours.  Like everyone said, every year will be different so you never know.  If you don't want to leave it to fate, I'd suggest volunteering or enjoying this years race as a spectator.  Just my opinion.

Good luck

Agree with this - don't leave it to chance!  When I signed up for Wisconsin 2009, I did it online and had no problems.  However, when I tried signing up online for Wisconsin 2011... I was stuck in a meeting at work when registration opened and tried within a half hour of opening and it was sold out already.  I ended up doing Louisville, which I don't regret one bit.  But I guess my advice would be to sign up at the race site if you are adamant about this race, or be prepared on the computer the minute registration opens.

10 days 12 hours 46 minutes!!!!!!!!!!

I got sorta emotional on my run this morning. I can't believe it's almost here! I think this has been the longest most trying month of my training this year!

Who is using race wheels and what is your predicted time?  Still considering renting some, but I'm not sure if it would be worth it at my pace.

A lot of the research out there shows that aero wheels actually benefit the slower rider a bit more. It seems the amount gained is proportional regardless of the speed but becuase the slower rider will be on the bike longer, they will benefit more. I have read that on quite a few sites, not sure of the validity.

For you veterans:

I am trying to get more arrow on the bike.

Should I remove the baseball cards from my spokes?  How about the bell and basket on my handlebars?

Remove the baseball cards.  The bell and basket only slow you down slightly with the obvious assumption that both are made of carbon.

My son did the Chicago Kids Triathlon this weekend and there was a little girl whose parents used a huge helium heart shaped balloon so she find her bike in transition - well the only problem is they tied it to the bike and not the rack so she rode the whole bike ride with this huge helium balloon dragging behind -haha

I think this might have been discussed already but I just bought new race tires and was wondering when I should put them on?  Should I get a couple rides on them before the race?  Thanks!

Be more 'aero' or be more of an 'arrow'?  That might be the first decision...then learning to spell it.

As a vet, I highly recommend getting as much aero stuff as possible, and renting/borrowing rather than buying for the first race or two.  Wheels and helmet are highly recommend.
