markhodges1973 - 2012-01-06 3:37 PM lets take a moment to talk about something different other than weight loss or total minutes exercised :-) Who uses/has used a GARMIN Footpod and was it worth the money to record your running cadence while on a tredmill? I am assuming it also records you cadence outside when there is GPS signal? Mark.

I ordered the footpod.  It does cadence and pace.  Yes, GPS gives you pace but it can be erratic.  I plan on using the GPS for distance but footpod for pace.  The new Garmin footpod is incredibly accurate. Also, if running and you lose GPS the footpod will kick in and do distance as well.  Important for me because one of my annual races goes through the tunnel under the Detroit River.  DCRainmaker.com has a post titled something to the effect "everything you want to know about the Garmin footpod".  http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2011/01/garmin-ant-foot-pods-everything-you.html

Thanks this is exactly what I wanted to know.

There was recent thread on BT discussing the necessity vs nice to have nature of a footpod.  I termed it as a nice to have.  If you do a lot of runs on a treadmill (me in the winter), like a bit more accurate instantaneous pace, and do runs where GPS reception is an issue it is certainly a nice to have.  Depending on your watch you can set it to use GPS for distance and footpod for pace.  Also, if the GPS signal goes out it automatically switched to footpod.  So, if you have $50ish laying around...its a nice add-on to a Garmin GPS watch.  Just like the GPS itself, its just a tool.  We all still have to do the work and be smart interpreting the data.

Gabe - did you ever order the 910xt?  I hear they are finally going to ship in the next couple weeks.

Not yet, but that is very good news because according to the link in Amazon it used to say it would be shipping somewhere in April, which was way too far out.  It's now saying shipping in 2-4 weeks.  I'll look into it to place my order!

The footpod is ok but it only records your cadence, it doesn't tell you how fast to go. If you run with music, then find songs that have a beat 180 or higher, if you run without music, ebay has some clip on metronomes for $6 that you can put on your visor/hat or t-shirt and the frequency is adjustable. I trained for Ironman Texas entirely based on a high cadence for both bike and run (186 RPM/SPM) and heart rate not exceeding 143BPM (that's my magic number).

The benefits of a high cadence are incredible, one of the biggest is the reduced risk of injury while running because the short strides are less pounding to joints and connective tissue. The other big one is running economy, I used to think that longer strides meant more distance therefore faster, WRONG. Taking long strides at a low cadence 130 or 140SPM (try it) elevates your HR immediately.

I was about to ask about strides... Thanks Ernesto...  When I purchased my last pair of shoes, they video taped my stride to make sure that the shoe was doing it's job and keeping my ankle straight (I am a pronator and heel striker).  They told me to keep my stride short and that will help me land mid foot.  I've been concerned about what that would do to my pace.  I think I'll order the metronome!

I came from work today with a pretty good headache, so had to take a couple of pills and take a nap before working out today.  Thanks to the long nap I had to go to the gym and do my hill repeat workout on the treadmill.  7 x 1 minute hills (7% grade) at 6:31/mile pace with 2 minute rest intervals at 9:05/mile pace.  10 minute warmup and 10 minute cooldown for a total of 39:00 and 4.58 miles.  HR was a little high thanks to running indoors and the caffiene in the excedrin.

I did my cycling FTP test this morning and am beat. I'm having a hard time adding my time from the iPad but I did 45 minutes total. The test was really cool - id love to be ble to train w power all the time. It really shows what a weak cyclist I am.

I'm in awe of your paces.  Same average HR as me, but 4min/mile faster.  If only...

Thanks, but unfortunately I'm crap on the bike and as Ernesto says you have to be able to run off the bike to be a triathlete.  As some friends of mine are fond of saying, triathlon training is swim a bit, run a bit, bike A LOT.

Try to keep it within the Texas state borders.

Heading out for a ten mile trail run w friends this morning. Can anyone recommend a headlamp that won't leave a divot in my forehead for the rest of the day? I am so ready for daylight in the morning!!

Today: 50 minute trainer ride (MS 15 30" intervals at 110% to 115% of FTP with 30" recoveries followed by 10' at 70-75% FTP); followed by 7.25 mile run in 64 minutes outside because it was 39 degrees which is unheard of for Michigan in mid-January at 7am.  Great morning - feel awesome!

I use a Princteon TEC one that I have been very happy with.  Not sure about the divot as I wear it over my running hat most of the time.  Got it at REI.

Just what asthma sufferers look forward to, 60 degrees 18 hours ago, 29 degrees this morning. My heart rate was at MAF walking!

Sorry you had a tough morning Barry.  Hopefully it will warm back up!

Elizabeth-Scott and I had to stop running our trail before sunrise due to coyotes...  The Headlamp that was recommended from REI was one that I had looked into though.

Here at 6879ft, I had to run before Scott left for work so that our daughter wouldn't be alone for long.  It was 23 degrees F at 6:50, with sunrise not until 7:20am.  Luckily the winds were minimal.  Had to ask myself..."how bad do you want this?".  That got me out the door and down the road.  Took a different route than ever before.  Tried to keep my HR low and focus on cadence.  1:35:53 for 6.95 miles. Avg HR @ 151.

Does anyone know how to adjust the scale on elevation on the Garmin website?  It looks like I run a flat surface unless you go to the player.

I'm on night shift this weekend, so not much training happening, but going to make the effort to do at least a 30min run today before I coach a lane at the club swim session and head off to work.  On the positive side, I always lost weight on night shift:
