Extreme Veteran 809 Central New Jersey | Subject: RE: Athena/ Clydesdale Official Mentor Group leatherneckpa - 2013-01-14 8:01 PM Fechter, no fair rubbing it in! I SO wanted to take my bike out on the road this weekend. Our temps were in the upper 40's. Unfortunately, with so much snow cover the ambient favored fog. And we had a TON of it. I honestly didn't dare take my bike out on wet roads in that kind of fog. Some idiot would have hit me. Probably just as well. The bike path for the middle three miles is probably still under snow.
Sorry, didn't mean to rub it in ;-), well maybe a little. It was actually damp and the fog was quickly lifting when we headed out and not to mention a bit chilly. Glad we don't have any snow yet to worry about. It definitely did not get as warm as they had originally forecast and I learned my max tolerance for riding is no colder than 45 degrees. I have asthma and the cold air brings on attacks. Weather is quickly turning cold again so not likely to get out again for a while. |

I survived the 400 yards. So psyched! 83 days to White Lake! Very solid swim, well done. Got 28 minutes on the trainer last night, I had been running around doing errands before hand, so I started tired but was glad that I gutted it out. Plan for tonight is to be back in the pool, hopefully it won't be as busy as it was on the weekend. Edit: in terms of breakfast, I used to always just eat cereal, but lately I've been trying to eat much healthier (and not start the day with pure carbs) so I've been having a couple of different things, but what I've actually been enjoying is just having a high protein meal replacement shake or bar. Very convenient (I usually eat it while walking to the subway), not super high calorie and seems to make me less hungry in the morning than cereal did. Although very boring, so might not help you. Member 202 | Subject: RE: Athena/ Clydesdale Official Mentor Group I try and mix my breakfasts up. Usually it's just a protein bar (nature valley nuts and dark chocolate) on the way to the gym. Sometimes I will make up a batch of egg mcmuffins with only half the whole wheat English muffin per, and freeze some and then stick one in the toaster oven at work in the morning. I've done the same thing with breakfast burritos. Wouldn't recommend microwaving either though. Other breakfast items may be a piece of whole wheat toast with peanut butter, protein shakes, oatmeal, cereal. I agree with Kent on the protein though, if I have protein for breakfast I seem to be less hungry later But every breakfast must include coffee! |

Extreme Veteran 1150 Nisbet, PA | Subject: RE: Athena/ Clydesdale Official Mentor Group Breakfast for me varies. Most days it's 2/3c Quaker Quick Oats, 1T brown sugar, and ½c of some fruit & nut trail mix. Two or three days a week I have an omelette; 3 eggs and 3 slices of cheese, maybe some mushrooms. And Sunday my wife sometimes makes pancakes. |

Extreme Veteran 1150 Nisbet, PA | Subject: RE: Athena/ Clydesdale Official Mentor Group Oh YEAH baby! The Percheron is back!! Treadmill - 35m - TONS of sweat! Anyone who's been here since I started this journey knows that I am not the most patient individual. I decided to push my C25k ahead of schedule, kind of. Went with the following. 5m W/U @ 3mph, intervals [email protected] then 2m@3mph, 5m C/D @ 3mph Only slightly bummed because I miscounted, should have done one more interval so I would have 10m of jogging. Treadmill running is nowhere near as jarring to my knees as jogging on the road. And OH BOY was I sweating! Went upstairs and showered, dressed, and was still sweating as I was leaving the Y. I can't say that I look forward to jogging yet, nor that I am even eager to hit that treadmill. But I LOVE the way I feel after it's all over! |

New user 128 | Subject: RE: Athena/ Clydesdale Official Mentor Group sounds like another solid workout! Unfortunately I got held up with work stuff and wasn't able to make it to the pool. I did log another 28m on the trainer though. Was too close to bed so took forever to fall asleep, but was nice to get the workout in. I feel like I am on a very good roll right now and it is starting to become routine. Also been working really hard on my eating, still have some bad habits, but progress is being made! |

Member 202 | Subject: RE: Athena/ Clydesdale Official Mentor Group Today is a much needed rest day after hitting it pretty hard for 10 straight days. Had swim class last night, ended up doing 2500 yards as part of the class, then stuck around to make it an even 3000. Was so busy before class that I forgot to grab something to eat. Won't do that again. By the time I left there, I had no gas left in the tank. Slept great last night though. I really like the swim lessons for the most part, but one huge drawback is that there is such a range of abilities within the group. Unfortunately, most of the instructor's time is spent on the two people who probably should be in beginners swim lessons, not this class which is aimed towards people who already know how to swim, but would like to work with somebody on improving technique. The instructor recommended they move to the lessons, but they weren't hearing it. I've decided that the amount it costs for the class will be better spent on fins and paddles, and I will take to the pool on my own next month. And since the instructor is also my coach, I'm sure my workouts will be similar to what I would have done in the class anyways. Halfway to the weekend. Have a great day! |

Extreme Veteran 809 Central New Jersey | Subject: RE: Athena/ Clydesdale Official Mentor Group Thanks for the info on breakfasts even though it all sounds like things I am already eating. Guess there really isn't too much variety when it comes to breakfast - shakes/smoothies, eggs, cereal, waffles/pancakes. I did come across something yesterday ironically at the cafe at the Y. They have a baked oatmeal to go - no flour so can't call it a muffin. They were so nice to share the ingredients and directions so that I could figure out the calories and amazingly, it is only 210 calories for their large version (picture jumbo muffin size). I bought one yesterday to try as my afternoon snack figuring I would eat half of it. It was really good and 1/2 was plenty to fill me up without feeling heavy. I had the other half last night as dessert. I figured if I used a regular muffin pan, then they are only 105 calories or so. I like oatmeal and like it on the thicker side but at times don't want to sit and eat a hot bowl of it, these hit the mark perfectly and can be frozen so no worries about eating them all before they spoil. I have to hit the store to buy some of the ingredients so that I can make them at home. Let me know if you want the recipe. |

Extreme Veteran 1150 Nisbet, PA | Subject: RE: Athena/ Clydesdale Official Mentor Group There is simply NO TIME for a workout on Wednesdays. Up at 6, in school by 730, teaching until 330, tutoring until 430, drive 40 minutes to WW's meeting, WW's until about 645, and then home. No way I'm working out after 6pm. I go to bed at 10 and I don't sleep well as it is. So Wed is now my designated rest day. For the time being I am trying a 6/2 workout pattern; 6 times a week, 2x in each discipline. Hoping that is enough until spring breaks and I can change things up a little bit. Might try to sneak extra workouts in on the weekends. My students are already asking about the next race and if they can go. LOL, sure, if you can get to NC. 81 days to White Lake. ETA: I had been lying to myself ever since that October race and telling myself "Oh, it's only one pound" or "That's not so bad". But Saturday the scales told me 357.2 and I realized I had regained 15 lbs since the race. That was my "enough is enough" moment. Tonight I am pleased to say I dropped nearly 5 lbs. I was 352.4. My goal this week is drop below 350 for next Wed. Edited by leatherneckpa 2013-01-16 7:49 PM |

Extreme Veteran 809 Central New Jersey | Subject: RE: Athena/ Clydesdale Official Mentor Group I had a speed drills swim workout early this morning which tired me out but felt good (1800 total) then went back to the Y for a 30 minute cycle class. I remember not too long ago really struggling to make it through the class. Today it was almost too easy. Guess I am making more progress on my bike/trainer than I thought. Had planned to go back a third time for a yoga class but lost track of time. Oh well. Tomorrow I plan to take a cardio-kickboxing class in the morning since I really enjoy the class. I don't normally get to take it since I usually work on Thursday but have tomorrow off. It's my birthday! Unfortunately I still have to go in to work later in the day for a training class so it will be two trips to the Y again tomorrow. My scheduled training is a bike ride on the trainer will do that too at some point. Hope everyone had a great day today! |

It's good to have enough is enough moment's I had mine recently too and since then I've been very happy with the progress. Last night was another trainer ride, 3 days in a row at 28 minutes, so that was pretty solid. Tonight is a swim, hopefully I don't get jammed up at work again like I did on tuesday! Also been good about watching eating and the scale is slowly starting to show the results, I am now weighing myself everyday as well. This weekend will be a big challenge for me: going to a friend's on saturday for the resumption of hockey season and then another friend's on sunday for football playoffs. |
