Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() FOR ALL -- RUNNING OFF THE BIKE (revised) This is just a small revision, but where I said that in the final 100 yards or so I go to big ring and 19- or 21-teeth cog and hammer for home, that ain't quite right. It is more along the lines of the 15- or 16-teeth cog. And that's the truth! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() MINDY - You're right! It's now 17 messages per page. At this rate, before long we will all get to be Top of the Page, with each and every post! Also, I want you to consider the source from where the recommendation came to break into gels very slowly. I am a real sucky-dog baby when it comes to new and/or unusual foodstuffs, very disinclined to try anything whose origin is not immediately obvious. This was a real problem in Spain, where the only tapis I ate was at a place that had full descriptions - with pictures! - of every single item. Lynn, who is far less discriminating, ate anything that didn't appear to be still breathing, and loved every last morsel. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ERIC - WAAAHHHHHHH!!!! Say it's not so, that you were just goofing around! I think you always have something worthwhile to say, and I've missed youtr input duroing the past week or so as you've been hunkered down in the sedges and rushes. Well, I hope you don't disappear for long, and maybe for every time you read the posts, just squeeze in a brief "hello", or "you're being watched", or whatever tickles your fancy. Let me know how the shin problem resolves itself, if not here then at [email protected]. DON'T BE A STRANGER!!!! |

Regular ![]() ![]() | ![]() stevebradley - 2009-03-03 9:44 PM Two hours on the trainer this evening, and all of it supported by "athleteic-based" viewing!! To wit: (1) Watching/listening to discussions leading up to the NHL trade deadline tomorrow. (2) Part of the Chelsea-Portsmouth soccer game. (3) Bits and pieces of "American Gladiators". (4) 3/4 of "Kill Bill". So, hockey and soccer players are athletes, the people on "Amer. Glad." are athletic, and - special effects notwithstanding - Uma Thurman performs in a very athletically. See, falling off the wagon last week and groveling in the slough of junk TV was just an anomaly! STEVE, Good job! You're athleticizing DVDs and TV! I got through 6 miles in 37 minutes tonight, inspired by the audio 'performance' of Dean Karnazes Ultramarathon Man. Revoltingly entertaining!

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() MY COMPUTRAINER IS BACK IN OPERATION!!!! Along with the trainer and rollers, I also have a Computrainer. However, today was the first time I have used it in over two years. DUH? The reason for that is my oft-mentioned technological idiocy, along with the fact that at some point I lost the sensor magnet that attaches to the crankarm, and it took me a long time, with several trials and tribulations, to get a replacement. Mostly, though, it is so much easier to use the trainer, and then the rollers come in ever-so-handy when I want to live life on the edge a bit. But, having finally made the study/computer room quite nice yesterday, I decided that I might as well christen it by trying to reconnect the Computrainer --- and b'gosh and b'gory, I DID IT!! Will miracles never cease?? Today's was pretty simple, a rolling "course" of 22.35 miles. My averages for the ride were: 20.5 mph, 198 watts, 92 rpm, and 130 HR. I'm pretty pleased with those numbers, especially since I did a 2-hour trainer ride last night. Mostly, though, I ecstatic that I managed to get the CT up and running. Yay for me! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA - You got some good responses at the main forum! The last time I asked a medical question, over at slowtwitch, I got scolded for asking there instead of rushing to my doctor. And even after I went to my doctor, I still got scolded for trying to get opinions at a triathlon forum. Arrogant buggers!! (However, there were some people who gave me decent advice.) |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() i'm here, i'm here. i've gotten a case of the blues, to be honest. i think i need some sunshine. i am so very sick of being cold. the good news is that it is supposed to be almost 70 degrees and sunny both saturday and sunday. yay! work is stressful. big fight with the husband over the weekend. AND, i got in the pool this week and i think i forgot how to swim over the weekend. it was the strangest thing. i just felt like i was flailing all over the place, kept getting water up my nose and i felt like my body was sinking. somehow i made it through all 2500m. barely. i have good days and bad days in the pool, but this was strange. my time wasn't too much slower than usual. i just felt terrible. .....okay, i am done venting now. things are getting better. work is still stressful, but the fight is reconciled and i have made it out of the pool. i meet with the hip specialist this morning. have a great day all!! Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISALISALISALISALISA!!!! We're cyber-crossing! I just bumped a thread up to the top of the list at slowtwitch, and I hope you get to it before it slides. It is "Labral tear in hip", the author is sportschick, and there is some good (I think) recent info. Check out the comments from susanherself, and the ones after her. The thread was started a few months ago, but has been revitalized. Okay, now I'll go back and read yours, which I just saw there as I was rushing to get this info to you. Glad you're back! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA - Bad on the work, good on the reconciliation, and as for the pool - that IS weird when that happens, huh? At least feel thankful that your time was close to the usual, as whenever that sort of thing happens to me, my time definitely suffers as well. I try to follow the little rule that whenever form seems to be falling apart, that's the time to quit the workout, but I usually fail and continue flailing away. Even though I know that these happenings are just random anomalies, they still really unsettle me; no, "threaten" is a better term. I'm honestly afraid that it will be the beginning of the end of my being a quasi-competent swimmer! My good money says that your next splash in the pool will see you having returned to regular form. Wanna bet?? Is this morning's hip visit for the second opinion? Keep us posted please! Enjoy the impending warmth! It'll be nicer here in a few days as well, but a far cry from 70. I might venture out on the bike on Sat or Sun....but having the Computrainer set up takes some of the "pressure" off tackling an outside ride. And have you seen the current weather maps for the country? I didn't see one for the jet stream, but it must be well north of here, and even beyond. Yay for spring!!!! |

Are you kind of like New England weather -- wait a few minutes and it will change? ![]() Anyhow, the profile pic is very nice - much more flattering than that little yellow one! Off to my ART person for more work on the Achilles. ART is SO much fun! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() all right. here is the scoop. first of all, i really liked the doc I went to see today. I feel like he actually took the time to listen to me (even though he was running an HOUR behind on appts) his opinion is that there are clear cut labral tears in both hip sockets. in non-active people this might not be something that ever requires surgery or could be helped by non-surgical means (such as strengthening your core). since he assumes that my core is already pretty strong from already being an athlete, this isn't going to do much, if any, good for me. .....although, i did just come from baja fresh and my core is feeling a little blubbery to be honest. surgically, there are two outcomes. if he gets in there and sees that the cartilage is mince meat, they just scope. with scoping, they just remove all the crap and there are no restrictions on activity. you can pretty much start running whenever you feel like you can. for most, this usually is 3-5 weeks. if he gets in there and sees that the cartilage is reparable, then they stitch it back to the bone. recovery for this is significantly longer, and can take up to a full year with no activity. The other caveat to this, is that if they repair it, then there is also a boney prominence that i happen to have on my "hip ball" that will need to be shaved off so it doesn't tear the cartilage again. the other thing is that they won't do them both at the same time. so i have to wait to be semi recovered with the first before they will do the second. he also says that i can wait until after the eagleman to have this. Part of me is really happy by that, the other part just wants to have it done and over with. Since it is impacting both cycling and running the internal debate is that i know i am not going to be the best athlete I can be for these spring races so why not just bag them and potentially be able to be in great shape for the fall (and my sept 13 race). the other thought is that i can have it after eagleman (june 14th), and potentially be ready to run again roughly the end of august......and even (potentially) be able to gut out my sept 13 race. even if i am not ready to go by then, i will only miss that one fall race. what would you do? as performance goes, I feel like this impacts my running and biking significantly. I feel like it makes a 2min/mile difference on my runs, i am not sure about the bike time. even with the extra time, i still should be able to finish respectably just not to the level I would have preferred. so which means more, the glory of the finish OR just getting it over with? the doc says I would be fine to wait until june. LISA, sorry to hear you got the blues but glad things are lookin up. Blue & Stressed Grace has the blues too. She went for a Green Card interview with Spencer on Monday and was told by a representative of the US goverment that 'Congratulations, you will receive your green card in 7-10 days'. At that time, Exhilarated Grace celebrated the end of her 8 month LimBo and cheered FINALLY being able to apply for work and drive here in the US of A. Then on Tuesday the US Govt calls Exhilarated Grace and informs her that her application is likely to be denied afterall, and she will likely be DePorTed. So after $2000 in application fees, 8 months of lost income, no drivers license, no work permit, and faced with DeporTation, Blue & Stressed Grace is VENTING. If any kind soul wants to brighten Blue Grace's day, visit http://gracestribulations.blogspot.com/and click on an ad. 1 cent will bring Smiley Gracie back! |

LISA, My vote: Get it over with? Difficult decision though. I wouldn't want to look back and know that my performance was not the best because of the injury and pain. I would want the best finish I could for myself, and would definitely not want to be in too much pain. What do the others think? |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() GRACE - I will visit your blogspot later, but for now I just want to say how sorry I am that you are in this awful bind. Is there any review or appeal process that can be undertaken at this point? And if you are in fact deported, is there anything to stop you from trying it again at a later date? Right now you have paid a very large financial/employment cost -- but I suppose that's small compared to the emotional cost. When you said in another post that you are a Malaysian hurricane, I guess that means that Malaysia is home? Is there any chance that Spencer can follow you there? Yikes. I really have no good ideas for you about this. I'm hoping that are further steps you can take! Are there any more meetings or interviews or consultations scheduled? Keep us posted on all of this, okay? Illegitimum non carborundum! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA - Two good things are the second opinion and the fact that you liked the guy and felt that he listened to and understood you. Another good thing is that you have options, which is more desirable than having one path only. What would I do, you ask? Well, there are two answers to that: (1) In my younger days, I would've been inclined to do the early races (is it just Columbia and Eagleman?) -- I think. I probably would've taken the gamble that I can have my cake and eat it too - race early, have the procedure, return for the late summer and fall. (2) In my current older days, it becomes much, much more complex. First, I have a fairly low tolerance for pain. Second, I have a relatively slow recovery rate. Third, I have a big fear of doing more damage than is already there. Fourth, I HATE doing poorly in races, which includes feeling that a race might be compromised by how I'm feeling going into it. Fifth, I'm trying to be smarter about my signing-up activities, which means trying to enter races in which there is some sort of refund available for people who are halt and lame. Does that about cover it? Unless Columbia and Eagleman were really high-priority races for me, I would likely pass on them. I'm assuming, though, that Ryan would do them anyhow and, if so, is that apt to make you crazy if he does them but you can't? That's another consideration for you, and it might be fairly significant. I know that Columbia has a refund policy in which you will get back $85 if you bail before either April 1 or 15, but I don't know about Eagleman. Vigo has good refund policies for his races, but seeing as how Eagleman is now 70.3, he might be stuck on that. It's worth checking into, anyhow. Given my intolerance for pain, I couldn't suffer through training for a tough one in Columbia and a long one in Eagleman -- especially if my performance was going to be adversely affected. BUT THAT'S JUST ME!!!!!! I mean, it might be you also, but I'm really only giving you my personal thoughts. What you have going for you in spades is youth, and that bodes well for the recovery aspect - all other things being equal. And if you can work through the pain, and if the doc assures you that you can't do anymore damage, and if you are content with doing well enough in those races but just not your best, then....... So, that's my $0.27 worth, coming from a pain-shy, ancient, slow-recoverer!! |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() i think i have decided to do my races through the eagleman for the following reasons. 1. i had to bag the eagleman last year and go up there and cheer. i don't think i can make it another year cheering....steve, as you correctly assumed, ryan is also registered for these races. i am not a very good spectator. 2.) i am still training okay. i think i can have respectable times. 3.) there is no guarantee that the recovery will be short. if i bag my spring races and have surgery now, there is a chance that he will REPAIR the cartilage. if he repairs, I am looking at a year of recovery. i may has well have the spring. 4.) i have 4 races in the spring compared to only one that I am registered for in the spring 5.) i can get myself into peak shape over the next 2-3 months which i have to think will only get me in a better position for a swift recovery 6.) i forgot to mention that the doc gave me anti-inflammatories that are supposed to help with the pain that will make training easier through june. 7.) if i have it during the summer i can just spend my free time sunning myself by the pool (and look hot in my bikini since I will be in good shape). my decision would be completely different if i thought i would do more harm before june, but after telling my doctor i was registered for spring races he said, "if i were you, I would wait until after. you'll be fine." |
