Okay!

So, i have my first race this weekend. V. nervous. Going over the checklists, getting stuff together, and making sure I have directions, etc. Doing a Swim/Run brick this morning and then nothing else to do but wait for Sat.

So, here is my question, and it is kind of a kooky one, and mainly for the girls: I get some thigh chafing when I run longer distances, and sometimes from the bike. Mostly from the run, though. I have found that it has gotten worse this summer, and I think it is because in the summer I shave and then the regrowth is what gives me the terrible chafing.

Does anyone else get this? What do you do? Waxing? Suck it up and look like a Wookie at the pool? I have decided that between now and Sat. I am just going to suck it up. But moving forward for the summer, I would like to find a solution.

Thanks! (And sorry you guys had to read this chick stuff.)

Have you tried experiments with different shorts? For example, if it's the skin of one leg hitting the other leg that causes the problem, maybe try a longer length. Or if it's the material of the shorts rubbing, try a tighter pair or a looser pair, or a different material, etc.....

Yes! I thought it was just me! I mainly wear my 4-6" tri shorts for longer runs. But I have a pair of baggy running shorts that I sometimes have to wear when everything else is dirty. When I wear those, I make sure to apply copious amounts of Body Glide to the chafe-prone areas. That helps a lot.

OMG I have a similar issue when I use the spin bikes a lot (like at the moment)... its right in the upper bit where leg meets body and can be horrible!

I opt to use a trimmer rather than a shaver... so get it almost all gone but not quite so I dont get the ingrown issues... Ive just started using chamois creme but need to remember to use it regularly...

AND I find it definately relates to hor I have the bike set up AND what shorts Im wearing at the time...

Good luck with it!

A walk on the beach and whatever you normally do on holiday woud be fine... to be honest if its only a few days you are NOT going to lose fitness in that time!

So, i think i might need to go see a doctor. WHenever I go to wal-mart I always check my blood pressure, and it always seems high like mid 130s over mid 70s...so not hypertensive but prehypertension. It just has me concerned since I feel like im healthy, i eat fairly well, im 22 years old, My pulse seems healthy like high 40s usually, and I workout a good bit -like 5-10 hours a week.

Idk though.

In general it's a good idea to see a Dr. once a year but I don't know if I would trust a Walmart machine as an actual measure of blood pressure.

I've tried the blood pressure machines at Walmarts. (Usually, I'm waiting to pick up a prescription, so I'm looking for ways to kill time.)

The results are always all over the place.

Are you at UNC now? Maybe visit the Student Clinic there, and ask them to check your blood pressure.

No, i dont start till august. Another question what is moderate alcohol intake? I know for males its about 2 drinks/day, so that would be 14 drinks a week, but what if you drink all 14 of those in one night...would that still count as moderate?

The health recommendations are no more than 2 per night for males.. but there is ALSO a second part that say you should have at least x number of alcohol free days per week (I think its around 2) as part of the full 'suggestion'.

If you drink all your allocated drinks in one sitting its considered 'binge drinking' and bad for you...

But seriously going out and have a meal and some wine with friends could easily push you into the 'binge drinking' category if you have more than a couple of glasses...

You realise this a very Uni question to ask... 14 beers in one sitting

14 beers in one sitting...talk about bloated.

However, it you only drink on say a Saturday and that Saturday happens to be a holiday and you start early in the day and pace yourself all day...14 is easily attainable.

Just my opinion (and experiences)

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend...I'm headed to visit my Grandmother in Mississippi

Question!

Anyone know of some exercises that I can do to strengthen the muscles that support the knee?

I tend to hyperextend my knee, which causes problems. (It wobbles from side to side too - which is also a problem.) So I'm looking for suggestions on how to strengthen the muscles supporting the knee.

Thanks!

Hey peeps,

Just wanted to let you all know I am still around and have not abandoned the group, but have had a hectic/stressfull past couple of weeks.  Auditors have finally completed our 2008 financials, but are still on site as they have some work streams to complete as the company prepares public company filing information (not sure how long that can drag out, but with the economy being bad, probably another few months).

That's the good news.  The bad news has been:

1)  Doctor put me on injured reserve for the summer:  No running program until I can swim at least 800 yards with no soreness in my knee and no sooner than September to ensure my shin splints have healed completely (you can check my album if you are curious to see the difference between left and right leg).

2)  I totaled my car - low speed and no one was hurt - I rearended someone as I was checking my blind spot to change lanes at the same time he decided to stop in the middle of the road.  I was able to hit my brakes causing my bumper to go under his.  His car rode up my front end, so his car had no damage and my front end looked like an accordian.

I took the last week off, but it's time to get back on the bike at the gym and walking on the dreadmill.  I'm also thinking about upgrading to silver membership and accessing the winter maintenance programs to keep me motivated.

After completing my physical therapy I have a few for you, along with the "I'm not a doctor" disclaimer:

Single leg squats - you probably won't be able to go as deep as normal squats, then as you get comfortable, you can do these on a bosu ball.

3 directional lunges - forward/45 degree/90 degree (side) - only go as low as comfortable and knee should never extend beyond your toes.

Walking squats with resistance band - resistance band around ankles (or just above ankles) squat and walk forward, backward and sideways; again, only squat as low as comfortable.

I have some others with photos that I can PDF and PM you tomorrow.
