AndrewMT - 2010-11-13 3:17 PM Just a random thought, but training through the Winter will be a &!tch.  50 miles today of rain, wind and cold, and it's only November!

ha!  not random at all.  i was cold this morning, very cold.  and then running off the bike i felt like herman munster with my frozen feet feeling all kinds of awkward.  oh, and laughing at all the crying i did last year getting ready for lone star, swearing i'd never sign up for a long course race in the spring again.   at least there was no rain, that really sucks.  nice job

Where'd you ride?  We started in Katy and went up through Pattison to Waller and back.  Could barely push 15mph into that wind!

Tell me about it! I've been looking at my training plan and I just don't know how the heck I'll put all that training with the weather and the short days. Hey, at least sweat will not be a factor! hehe.

ha!  but you have a little race next weekend, so you get a pass!

andrew, we have this awesome old railroad converted to a multi use path.  its 61 miles to the alabama line then another 33 into bama.  a little crowded with walkers and runners the first 10 miles but after that, smooth sailing.  nice not having to worry about cars.  great scenery too,  especially with the leaves in full autumn mode.

i wish they'd find a way to do something like this around beltway or grand parkway.

Tommy, We ride at TMS a lot so let me know when you will be there.  The loop is exactly 5 miles and very safe as there are virtually no cars.

John, we have a similar trail system here, the Trinity Trail.  End to end you could easily cover 60 miles.  There are a few places where you have to dodge kids and walkers, but for the most part very safe.  I will be spending many many hours there over the next 27 weeks.

BTW Kids...27 WEEKS!!!!!!

I just did Ironstar(Oil Man in 2011) and will be doing the California International Marathon on 12/5. I will start a 20 week plan, from Mark Allen, at the first of the year. The last few weeks of Dec I will just maintain and have fun.

For trainer rides, I do best with watching sporting events. It can be hard to concentrate on the dialoge of a movie and you really do not even need the sound watching a game. The DVR is your friend.

Tommy, sounds like a nice change of pace to go out to TMS. I will be going up to Muenster for some long rides so hopefully we can get a good group to go up there a couple times. At least once, I want to do 2 loops of the 60 mile route for an epic training day.

I'd pick up a 11-23.  Between the two of those you should be set unless you plan on doing some serious climbing.  I'll be using one of those two for IMTX.

I switched to a compact crank this summer. So far, I've done most of my training rides on a 12x25, and most of my Houston area races an 11x23. I've also got an 11x28, which I've used on one hilly HIM and one hilly IM race. I thought the 11x28 was the great equalizer for not having the hills to train on. However, if most of you training & racing will be in Texas, I'd stick with the 11x23 & 12x25 combo.

Just finished Florida IM last week.  Been in recovery mode all week but already setting my mind on Texas IM.  Was completely silent on Florida board but will try to be active here.  For the fellow IM finishers, congrats.  For the rookies, put in the work and you will have a great and enjoyable day.  Don't put in the work and it can be a miserable day.  Dig deep and stay focused on the big picture on each workout.  A very early good luck to everyone for a safe, injury free, and fun training for the big day that you get to hear the best words in our sport of triathlon - you are an Ironman!!!

Thanks.  Longview, TX.  About 2 hours east of Dallas.  Easing back into it with focus on improving my run over the winter and maintaining fitness.  Plan on getting back to a structured plan January 16th.

Any good suggestions for TV shows on DVD??

Do you have Netflix?  Lots of options.  We just started season 2 of Dexter but there are tons on instant download or DVD options.

Ha!  Watched Dexter last year...loved it!!!

Andrew...yes, I've heard the Wire is awesome.  I think I'll start there this season.  So far my longest trainer ride was 2 hours and it's already time to line up the DVD's...

True...but there's nothing like being super-strong in March-April-May when others are just getting going.

I've been focusing on Marathon training for Houston in Jan. I'm going to start doing my bike speed work this week and then the build phase will begin in Jan. Swimming is swimming, so it's a constant

Should make for an interesting swim. Checked out the "lake" while doing Ironstar Half. Looks to be a healthy color of brown from the north park area. Not the widest of areas for an out-back IM swim but should spread out a bit on way back. AM sun should be out of your vision. Its dead on at IMAZ.

Lots of potential shade on run, might be alot of concrete to run on based on roads i drove?

Head wind on return half for bike could be biggest factor.

Late to the show and probably already discussed but how would you describe the bike route?  Hilly / Flat?  Bumpy / smooth roads?  Here in NE Texas, I would say there are alot of rolling hills and would assume the same for the Woodlands...

Nice rolling hills during most of the outer section.  After you cross back over HWY105 coming back, there is a stretch of around 8 miles that is slightly inclined so it just requires a little effort to keep the momentum going.  Coming in after that should be pretty fast IMO.

I find the roads to be fairly smooth and in good condition.

Does anyone know of a nice hotel within walking distance from race start / finish?  Host hotel has been sold out for a while and just thinking I better get something locked in so one less thing to worry about later...

Also, some of our group have RVs and want to camp.  Any camping within walking distance?

No Camping within walking distance, but I was looking at the KOA campground outside of Conroe. It appears the bike course runs right by there on the way out and its not too far on 105 across to where someone can see you on the way back into town as well

You're going to be S.O.L. when it comes to a hotel close to the race site.  All the hotels within walking distance have been sold out for months.  The host hotel sold out before registration even opened.  All other hotels within walking distance were sold out within a week or two of registration.

You won't have trouble finding a hotel, you're just not going to find one within walking distance or relatively close to the race site.  Parking will be a huge issue that day as well.  There's a local sprint tri that takes place at the same lake in early-May and parking is always a hassle.  Multiply that by 3x and you have a potential nightmare.  Hopefully, Keith and his crew will have something worked out.
