akrenik - 2011-01-17 10:58 PM So I am kind of freaking out a little bit.  My half marathon went fine yesterday.  In fact, I beat my goal time by 1 second.  haha.  Cardio-wise I felt great.  However, the final 4 or 5 miles were tough on my hips and knees.  Anyway, once it was over my legs were done.  So now my confidence for the HIM is shattered.  I just don't know how I am possibly going to be able to run 13 miles after biking 56 miles.  How are we going to be able to do it?  Ugh!  I only have 11 weeks to go and my biking has been terrible lately.  I haven't even ridden over 30 miles in months.  Plus, the bike course for this race is supposed to be a beast.  Crap.  Is it too late to ramp up my bike miles?

i had the same thought as you after my HM.  the way i look at it now is that it is a different mind set...HM vs. HIM.  in the HM i wanted to run a certain time and all my focus and energy went into that race.  in the HIM i will focus on the entire race and not put so much pressure on the HM part.   i dont know if that makes sense to you but i gives me a  small amount of comfort.  you will be fine.

Hey Everybody!

Been on BT for about 7 years and have only done sprints up til now... about 4-5 per summer and have decide I'm signing up for my first HIM in September... not too worried about the bike and the run but not looking forward to swimming for 30-40 minutes... although I do it in training all the time AND I'm a pretty decent swimmer...

now that I've found this forum, I'll be in here pretty often for support and advice!!!

Thanks in advance and looking forward to meeting all of you!!

Welcome--happy to have you! It's a great place for advice and support, and having done some sprints you will have a great background.  I...and several others here, have never done a multisport race.  Happy training!

Swam 2000 today - 500 wu, 1200 ms endurance, 300 cd

So about 800 into my main set I hack up some flem, start to choke, and g*d dammit I stood up in the pool. I'm so pissed at myself. I'm usually very strong mentally about this kind of stuff. I wasn't that tired, I just had a split second mental lapse and my feet hit the bottom. Almost immediatly I jumped off the bottom and kept swimming, but man am I pissed at myself :-)

Welcome to the new posters!

If you are doing the BT training plan then you have a bike focus week next week i think...

Holla e'erybody!

Been lurking for awhile, figured I'd sign up and post. Wanted to get into triathlons, so figured the best thing to do was just sign up for one. I plan on doing the Augusta 70.3 in September. Looking forward to it! Training wise if I had some direction I believe it's do-able. I feel like I'm a (1:42 HM/3:51 Full Marathon) solid runner and do pretty well on a bike. With time I think I can figure out how to splash about in the pool more efficiently Looking forward to meeting some other tri people, as well as learning what I can here!

MaggieKirkham - 2011-01-17 8:52 PM Started training seriously Jan. 1.   Trying to get ready for a half ironman in Boise in June.  I teach full time and have 4 kids 2 - 13 so time is an issue, but so far I feel good about my training.

Welcome! Thank you for joining us...I look forward to seeing you get in great shape! I have four kids, too. I can't imagine being a full-time teacher on top of all that. Teaching is MORE than a full-time job!

I have completed my 2nd transition yesterday. The workout consisted of a 45mile bike ride I did 46.12 with a 15min transition run I did it in 15:38 distance was 2.17miles moderate pace. I am a little worried about the pace which was 7:12min miles I really feel that is to fast especially after the ride. Once I got my legs into a rhythm which was about 200yds or so I just couldn't stop it was like they had their own mind.

So what do all of you do to slow down so you are not dogging it at the end of the run section.

That's a pretty common phenomenon! You are all warmed up and your body wants to GO! The best thing you can do is keep track of your heart rate or pace and force yourself to stick to an easy-to-moderate effort.

It's going to be ok. You just raced a half marathon. You are supposed to be beat! This does NOT mean you will not be able to do a HIM properly. If you haven't been following the plan for biking, then you can certainly use this as motivation to get back on the plan. Good cycling fitness is what will allow you to have a decent run in your HIM.
It is totally normal to freak out about these things. I remember doing my very first sprint race and thinking there was NO WAY I could do an Olympic. Yet somehow we take the plunge and have faith and get them done, day by day and month by month. You can do this...just follow the plan!

Sup everyone, I'm still doing well on my program, although I did cut my bike short a bit tonight because of the trainer. It was either that or throwing something through the window out of boredom.

But I'm headed out of town for about a week. I tried to modify my plan to be able to swim, run, and hold off on the bike while on vacation, but I honestly think I'll cut out a workout or two. Although swimming in waikiki is pretty fun, I'm not sure I'll know how far I will be swimming since the garmin doesn't pick up distance in water too well. But the OWS will be a great change of pace from the 16m pool I currently have access to.

Anyway, I hope everyone has a great week both during training and in normal life. I'll post when I get back.

Soreness is totally gone today, but a sort of melancholy has remained.  I need to just snap out of it.  Has anyone ever felt like throwing in the towel?  I haven't worked out for 2 days now and I am not missing it.  What the heck is wrong with me?!  I know I need to just suck it up, but my motivation is hiding somewhere and I can't find it.  Cry

Well...a few things here.  What's the melancholy like? Sounds like you are both happy to not be working out and annoyed with yourself because you're not sure what's going on.  While I haven't felt like quitting on this quite yet (I think a couple times I haven't wanted to do a workout, but that's it), I have a few things to say:

1.  Step back for a minute.  Don't push yourself and don't ask what is wrong with me.  Definitely not yet.
2. In this case, fatigue, and maybe tedium are combining to burnout.  Take another day or two to think.   I don't think this is a push yourself through type situation.
3.  Although you might not be changing courses, I think taking a day or two to think without working out is a change of course, albeit a slight one.

Just try to think about where you are and how far you've come.  Keep in mind that this is your process and you don't have anything to prove.  Yes, this is a tremendous accomplishment and you want to see it happen, but I really try to do nothing that comes at the expense of my happiness.  I think this is perfectly natural, and the first thing I miss when I don't workout is the endorphin release and there's something magical about getting it back.  You might find this to be the case very soon.  The HTFU school of thought that everyone preaches only takes you so far.  You just competed in a race, have been working hard, and have probably earned a couple days off...so what if you want them?

Thanks for the sound advice and the encouragement.  Forced myself to get on the trainer tonight so that I can at least put something on the training log.  You are right, though.  I did earn a few days off.  I need to stop beating myself up about it.

I travel a lot for work and was in Honolulu two weeks ago. Great Tri-store called Island Tri. Totally a different experience doing the OWS then a pool if you have not tried it. But a really good one! Lots of great runs too. Have fun and don't stress over a lost workout or two!

Do the run...feels good.  Do the bike...feels good.  Jump in the pool...100m and I'm hanging on the wall Yell   I can't seem to increase my stamina in the pool!  Right now I'm bi-directional breathing every 3rd stroke.  Should I try to breathe every other stroke when I start to get tired or should I change up my style (go to breast stroke for a bit then back to free)?  Granted I just learned how to swim in November.  I just hate the feeling that this is the one sport I'm not seeing as much progress in and right now I can't picture myself doing ~1900m OWS.  Is 4 months reasonable time to achieve this?

I'm a bit late, but is there still time/space to join in the fun here? I ask as I'm considering a HIM race in September this year, and have a zillion questions about training, etc. Thought this would be the place for it. Thanks!
