Scott,  thats what I keep trying to reinforce to those that are struggling in the water.  Once they get the hang of it they will be fine.  I could swim every day for 2 hrs and pick up maybe 10-15mins in the IM swim.  To me thats just not worth it, not to mention I would not be able to lift my Rt. arm.  If I can be in the upper middle or lower top tiers of the swim I am happy.

all i want out of the swim is to get out of the water and not feel cooked.  i dont care if i am last.  if you tell me that swimming 2000 yards 2 times per week will get me the HIM conditioning to feel good coming out then i will do that.   heck i will breast stroke if needed.

Hi Everyone.

Hey Jason - awesome swimming today - but just an FYI - I am coming after you LOL.

Coach and Scott - thanks for the advice and I know exactly what you are talking about but I am with Jason on this one. I am not trying to learn how to win the swim portion (at least not yet anyway) I am trying to learn how to survive it!

Anyway, went to the pool for the 4:00 lap swim and it was jammed Frown and did not want to fight for a lane so I switched to plan . Came home, going to do a short treadmill run, catch up on some work here at home and then head back for the 8:30 lap swim to get my fill of the H20 for the day. I have not been in there since Monday afternoon and I miss it.

KC

It's been a few days, but I have not gone far.  Just work, life and working out prevents getting on the computer some days.  So this will be a slow week for me since I will start my sprint training next week.  I am excited to get started.  I must be crazy!!

Scott- Did watching those videos really help? I'm just skeptical as to how watching a video on swim technique can translate into better movement in the pool. How do you know your doing what they're telling you to do?

I can't answer for Scott, but I did something similar.  If I can visualize it, I can communicate that to my muscles and the movements come in.  It's not like I'm going blindingly ast at first, but after catching on, it works.  Also, a lot more of it is based on feel than one would think.

i have watched a few videos and they help but my problem is that there are so many different types  of swimming.  i think TI is what i am trying to learn but not sure if that is best for tris.

It's really true.  Visualization really helps.   Try the YoutTube Total Immersion stuff and I swear check out Mr. Smooth and their avatar with the perfect stroke.  It helped me a lot.  Lots to learn.  But even watching Mr. Smooth analyze Lance's stroke confirmed and reinforced a lot of stuff.   Same goes for me with the running vids. I'm a visual learner.

Another thing you can do is put a pull buoy in legs and just work on angles of the pull in the water. If you hit it just right you will feel a ton of resistance and you can feel the forward momentum.  I play with my stroke all the time trying to get more efficient.

I have the same goal as you guys in the swim get through it with as little energy used as possible.  Ideal around 115hr.

Ran on the mill before I went to the 8:30 lap swim - not very strenuous but ok.

8:30 lap swim - it was busy, only 2 lanes open - lifeguard training in the rest of the pool but I got some work done. I did not get everything accomplished and fell a bit short of my goals and while I am a bit disappointed in that I am taking away the positive - at least I went and got wet.

Back at it tomorrow.

Have a great night everyone.

Hey getting wet is good.   I am on a low intensity week on the periodic schedule ...coach said no runs and no swims but I convinced him to let me get wet, low intensity swimming.  It's a good thing...keeps you in form.  Or as my masters coach says, You keep your feel for the water.  I actually swam easy and was breaking my times from just a few months ago.  Lots of progress lately on my swimming form.  More bang for the buck.

One thing I do when things are crowded...You can swim circles with three folks or more in a lane.  I use the opportunity to do speed drills...just hard 25s and 50s. Or builds...start slow and go hard at the end.  Or start slow, go hard, finish slow.  The result of speed work in the water is the same on the bike and run, to accustom the body to going harder overall.  It does work.  Mostly in the shorter Masters workouts thats what I do.  Then one longer swim at the gym during off hours when I can have at least half a lane to myself.

You all have a great day.  I'm off until Saturday!  Getting a therapeutic deep tissue massage tonight.  They hurt but they help.

Oops...mapped my route for today's run and found out I shorted myself by .14 miles yesterday.  4.6 on tap for today - nice and easy and then spin class later tonight.

On a diet note - Kashi Go Lean has a cereal that is 13g of protein per cup.  It lacks some taste so I boost it a little with dried cranberries.  Makes it much more palatable beyond your normal cardboard.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Looking forward to being outdoors the next couple days.  We're getting some good weather here on Friday and Saturday which is perfect timing because I have a long run on Fri and a long ride on Sat.  It's so hard to go long without some scenery and actually going somewhere.

Caleb, must be nice to be outside in decent weather!!  Enjoy the run.

Rob, I will have to try that.  Sounds like a good dry snack.

I am going to cut out of work early today to do an outdoor run supposed to be 25 so it should not be too bad.  Plus our dog has a ton of pent up energy that needs to be burned off.

Train safe today!!

Scott enjoy the down day and massage

18 more inches of snow here in New England.  Gotta love it.  My workout today was 3 hours of shoveling.  Usually I'd be wiped, but the tri training is working because I feel fine!

Ran my 4.6 really slow.  I'm going to blame it on an inch of snow accumulation on the roads as I was going.  It felt really good though.  I can't imagine being that slow on dry pavement though - or am I out of my tree?

Spin class in 5 hours.

Ouch 18" more??  I'm mad about 3 more inches.

A 10mm is not bad at all in snow.  Its much more important to not pull anything or fall than have speed on a slick surface.

My run should be fun in a little while, I love running on fresh snow.

Hey Team. Hope you had a great day.

Court - nice to see you
Scott - thanks for the swimming tips and enjoy your down time.
Caleb - hope your runs go well
Coach - how was your run and did the dog last?
Keith - 18 inches - good god - glad I am not shoveling that
Rob - enjoy the spin class - never been to won but I think I may try it.

As far as me for today - Nice busy day.

Today was supposed to be a day of rest but I am going to miss some workouts this weekend because of curling so I made some time to get a workout done.

Got in the pool, got on the bike, lifted some weights and met my curling team for some practice before the bonspiel that starts Friday night.

I think I will be in bed early tonight!

I am going to try to get a short swim in tomorrow but that may be it until Sunday because of curling. I will try to log on and say hello this weekend but if you don't hear from me - don't worry - I did not drown LOL.

Have a great weekend.

KC

I really haven't felt well the last couple of days, so haven't managed to get anything done. I'm hoping it's not all psychological. I have a tendancy to self sabotage.

Back on the wagon tomorrow with a run in the morning and a swim in the evening. Unfortunately, the run will have to be on the treadmill as we got yet more snow.Yell While the roads are kind of 'plowed' we have absolutely nowhere to put it so our normal running routes have become these skinny little danger zones.

Looks like everyone else is doing a great job. Nice work team!

i did a swim, 10x100, that was at a faster pace than usual.  then ran 8 miles.  i felt good on the run but i brought along two gels i had not tried before.  i was getting confident my stomach was "maturing".  i also had a nuuns in my water bottle.  i ate a gel and washed it down around 20 min in.  i ate the other about an hour into the run.  i felt a little acidy and my buddy gave me a tums.  it worked great.

when i got home...oh boy.  my stomach hurt so bad for about 2 hours.  i was in the bathroom 5 or 6 times.

i am so frustrated!  i need to figure this out.

back to the drawing board.

Hey Jason.
Nice swimming!

Wish I could help you out with the nutrition stuff while running but I have no clue. I would love for you to share it with me when you figure it out because sooner or later I am going to have to do the same. I know we are probably all a bit different as far as what our stomachs can handle but anything you learn would be greatly appreciated.

Good Luck.

No training today.  I did try to "work out" with my youngest daughter on our trampoline but that didn't happen.  I guess age and the cold has finally caught up with it......about ten jumps in and the tabs holding two springs to the mat broke.  Those two springs shot across the yard.  At least no one was hurt!  Off to bed to save up for a early ride and an afternoon run.
