New user ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks! It was my first tri, and a great one to start with. The prize was a nice bonus, even if I had to ask what it was It amazes me how fast and how much energy these kids have. They are fun to watch though. They gave me some extra motivation. I can't wait until my son is older and we can do events together. I love hearing all the stories you guys post about sharing events with your kids. Thanks for the kind words! mmez - 2012-03-10 8:36 PM WooHoo! Great Race Report!! Congratulations on your first indoor tri! Was this also your first tri? (I can't remember if you've done one before or not) How awesome that you won a prize - I like to race for free stuff, too! I can't believe they had 5 people in a lane - that's crazy! If I were you, I wouldn't be too upset with 14 laps, especially since you were having to stop/go in places to let people by. You should be proud of your 14 laps! A 5 minute transition between the swim and bike sure isn't a lot of time. I would have been in a world of hurt at mine since I actually changed out of my swim suit and into my tri shorts and then had to find the spin room! Sounds like you did just fine, though. No worries about running with a little girl - my 9 year old son is much faster than I am when we run (and has been for over a year now). He usually beats me by about 5 minutes in a 5k! Sounds like you got your running legs after the first 1.5 miles, which I think is pretty normal. Congratulations again and good luck on training for your next one! |

mcgilmartin - 2012-03-10 9:43 PM Jenheaslip - 2012-03-11 5:41 PM Survived my first indoor tri this weekend! It was absolutely perfect because it was very non-competitive and treated more like a group workout. It was a 15-minute swim, 45-min spin class and 5K run outside. I’ve done a lot of bricks but never put all three sports together, and my plan was to end Feb. or start March by trying all three in a row, so this indoor tri came at a great time with a great learning atmosphere. I had to get up at 5:45 to get ready, that was really hard but I was also pretty excited so not as bad as I thought. I even got to the Y 10 mins. early and had to wait for the building to open at 7. Next time, check the hours before heading out! I changed and started swimming warm-up laps at 7:10. Spent about 10 mins in the water then got out to check lane assignments. They had asked for a 100-yard time and to rate yourself on a 1-5 scale. I had said I was a 3 but they put me in a lane with the 4s. There were 5 people in a lane. There wasn’t room for me to move down so I stayed in the lane and volunteered to start last, which worked out well. The swim was hectic but not bad at all; it was motivating to try and stay with the person in front of you and at the same time not let the person behind you catch up. I swallowed water a few times when I turned to breathe and someone was swimming right next to me, and I got kicked twice, but the hardest thing was focusing on form with so much going on. I had to let people pass about 3-4 times when I got to the wall. I don’t regret waiting to start last, but at the end they blew the whistle when I was about 3 strokes from the wall, and I had stopped to let someone pass right before the last lap, so I was really bummed because they only counted 14 laps for me. If I hadn’t waited a bit to let a guy pass on the last lap I could have scored 15 laps, which was my goal for the swim. But my overall goal for the triathlon was to see how it felt to do all three sports in a row and what a tri is like, so I wasn’t bummed for long. We had 5 mins. to get from the pool to the spin room so I had a chance to change, grab water and set up my bike. I felt really hurried and barely made it in time, so I can see that transitions will be a real challenge. There were a few people who hadn’t used spin bikes before, so it took another 5 mins. to get them set up and I got a nice warm-up in while waiting. The instructor leading the class is a triathlete so he put on a pretty challenging class with lots of hills and sprints and moving around in the saddle. I drained my water bottle and tried to stay hydrated. I gave it about 90 precent to save a little for the run. They called out names for prizes while we biked and I won a tub of Gu recovery drink. Pretty sweet. After the class, we had 5 mins. to meet outside for the run. I grabbed a pullover cuz it was fairly cold out still and drank more water and ate half a Cliff bar. The run was a nice out and back on a paved path, gradually uphill then turning around for a gradual downhill. Most people took off and left me in the dust. I picked up a running partner for the first mile and a half – a 10- or 12-year-old-girl LOL She stuck with me stride for stride. There were four kids in the tri and two of ’em beat me on the run. At the turnaround my legs finally felt normal again and I booked it back. I ran the 5K just 10 seconds slower than my best 5K time from last fall, ending with 29:49, so I was really happy about that. I’m slowly getting faster and stronger. That said, I finished 19 out of 25 people for the run, and my 14 laps put me at the back of the pack in swimming too. Still a great run for me though. We got water bottles and drinking glasses and other goodies at the end of the race, with food from a local bakery, massages and lots of samples. I need a T-shirt that says “Will race for free stuff” Last summer when I did Couch to 5K I ended my races barely able to breathe and feeling like I was going to die. I was completely spent. After the indoor tri I was pretty beat but felt good, like I could keep going if I had to. And I wasn’t gasping for breath. That’s the biggest change I’ve noticed. I want to do an outdoor tri in 2 months, so I am going to re-evaluate my training program and refine it for the next six weeks. I really just need to get stronger in all three sports, and definitely start figuring out transitions. I know what to bring and was pretty well organized, it was more like what to do first and just feeling rushed. Any advice is welcome! Jen- my first thought is congratulations!!!!!! I feel like I've really accomplished something with this group in seeing you get up early and compete! 29:49 on a 5K after swim and bike is fantastic too~ very proud of you! |

We need you here ![]() We are moving in June. I believe our household goods will be packed up in May. We will have 3 pack dates - the stuff that gets put on a slow boat that we won't have access to for a few months (the majority of our stuff); the stuff we can't bring with us that will go in storage; and the stuff that we will bring with us that we need right away - pots, pans, sheets, towels, and clothes. Needless to say, our bikes will have to go over on the slow boat and most likely will not arrive until after the season is over. Fortunately, we all have trainers and will be able to train in the extra bedroom/office our new house will have. We have already decided to make it our workout room and my son has already asked if we can purchase a new treadmill (we killed the last one and haven't bought a new one yet). I also hear that there are lots of pools in Germany, so we will have access to keeping swim-fit as well! We'll be there for 4 years and then move back CONUS (continental United States). It will be good for the kids as we will be able to expose them to things they would otherwise not get to experience! |

We just found races that were stroller friendly and that way if they got tired they could always ride in the stroller, even though that never happened! We always registered them so they got the bib and shirt. My son has TONS of shirts that I have cut the front off of and am working on making him a race-shirt quilt. If nothing else, I could send you a couple of race bibs for your son and you could make your own race for him to participate in! Let me know! |

I can probably make a race bib for him, shouldn't be too hard. You gave me a great idea to bring a couple things and make them their own race, or have a race for them the day before. New user ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So focused on my race report that I forgot to say that I bought that Felt bike I was looking at Sunday! I can't wait to figure out the clips and really start riding it. The lady selling it gave me her shoes too since she is giving up cycling. She said it just wasn't for her and the bike and shoes have hardly been used. It feels like a great fit. How would I post a photo? |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wow, so much has been going on here lately I feel like I've missed a month of convo! Part 2 of 2 of beating up my IT band is completed! Now it's time to stop running, focus completely on PT and get myself healed up. I've been doing exercises and stretching 2x a day, plus PT 2x a week; however, running a half marathon and 15K within 7 days doesn't do the best for recovery. The 15K was the shorter, but harder of the two races. The HM was basically a long, flat, straight out and back. The 15K, however, had lots of turns to start and the Hart Bridge at the end...not to mention 25-30 mph wind gusts. The first 5K went over the Main Street Bridge, which wasn't bad, but winding through the Riverside and San Marco areas took a toll on my IT Band. The pain around one turn was so bad I thought I was going to have to drop out of the race. I realized it was the turns irritating my IT bands, so I dug deep into my running past and used an old cross country trick. When taking tight turns, cut the turn as sharp as possible, and walk through it. You can keep the same pace taking a smaller turn at a slower pace as running full speed around the outside of everyone. Walking in the turns really helped, and after the first 5K the course had a lot more straights, which was a real blessing. I really don't remember the second 5K, just me counting down the miles and people flying by. Then I saw a spectators sign that read "The HARDT PART is Coming Up!". That was at the base of the Hart Bridge, which is a steady 1 mile hill climb...with 30 mph wind gusts. I just ducked my head and kept running, looking up only to pass people walking up it. The results: 15K (9.33 miles) in 1:18:17, 229 of 1057...in my AGE GROUP; 1,582 of 16,344 overall. Again, I negative split the race, with my last 5K being my fastest. |

I forgot to add this to my earlier post - If you are doing a smaller race like a local 5k, ask the race personnel if they have an extra bib. Oftentimes they have a huge stack and just hand them out in order. At least they do here. I'm pretty sure if you explained why you wanted one they wouldn't have any problem finding an extra. Someone might have also not shown up for the race giving them an extra. We have some local runs and the organizers seem to have a huge stack of race number bibs. If you can't locate one I can check Saturday to see if I could get an extra or two. They are pretty generic and are the plain numbers with the Road ID logo. Steve |

And Robin, please let me know when you find that training plan because I would love to use it too!You can send me pics and I'll post them. Looks like Robin and Mariah have it figured out, too. Robin, do you know that woman in the pic? If you do, tell her there's a really tall swimmer in Chicago that would like to meet her LOL On another note, I had a RETUL bike fit today. One bit of advice - if you have access to a fitter (and can afford it) do it! It was amazing to be fitted with a method that does not allow any human error! You are hooked up at 8 different points and an image tracks your knee movement, your shoulder position, your feet/ankle, etc. After that, you are given a whole host of numbers that show how open your pelvis is, where your knee is in relation to your foot...all sorts osf things. The fitter then takes the numbers and makes adjustments accordingly. We changed the saddle to an Adamo in order to open up my pelvis, and get me more in aero and less upright. The saddle is a totally different feel, but I'm not against giving it a try to see if it will work out. My fitter was amazed at my flexibility which allowed him greater lattitude in adjustment - which made me feel good! He is keeping it a day or two in order to cut the extensions and re-route the cables. I also had the option of changing the color of the cable housing and bar tape to give it a different look, but in the end I decided to leave it white since it looks so sharp (even though it will get dirtier faster)! I can't wait to get her home and start working on feeling comfortable in aero. I also brought my daughter's bike in to have her new pedals put on. I picked some pedals similar to the types of pedals used on spin bikes - platform on one side and clipless on the other. I picked this style so that she could learn how to clip in and use them while on the trainer, but still use her running shoes during tri's until she feels totally comfortable while clipped in. She is VERY excited to get back from spring break vacation and clip in like the rest of us! ETA - writing this on my NOOK since I'm being lazy and don't feel like going downstairs, so please excuse any/all spelling errors since this is less than friendly to type on.
