Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Here's my 2 bits on weight loss. After doing a lot of research into the subject with an eye towards a lifestyle change vs. a diet, I've come up with a few things that really help me. First and foremost, the reason that most diets fail is that they put your body in starvation mode through the over-reduction of calories. A problem that I ran into all too much. What this means is that while you consume less calories and lose weight in the beginning, you are really telling your body to go into starvation mode, your metabolism will slow to a crawl, and every calorie you take in will be turned into fat almost immediately. What you need to do is to calculate your Basal Metabolic Rate and work off of that. Your BMR is basically the number of calories that your body requires in order to sustain regular function if all you did all day was lay on the couch. If you consume your BMR in calories each day and don't do anything at all, you should stay at the same weight. Experts recommend that you don't go below 1,000 to 1,500 calories a day to keep your body out of starvation mode. Experts also recommend that you only lose 1 to 1.5 lbs a week to be on the safe side. 1 lb of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So you want to create a caloric deficit of 3500 to 5250 calories a week. The approach that I've taken is to calculate my BMR and then try to consume that many calories as a base. The weight loss part comes in the form of the calories that I burn off throughout the day in the form of daily activities plus exercise. The Harris-Benedict Equation is considered to be one of the most accurate calculations for BMR: W = Weight, H = Height, A = Age Males: 66 + (13.7 x W) + (5 x H) - (6.8 x A) Females: 655 + (9.6 x W) + (1.7 x H) - (4.7 x A) A great website is the sports fitness one at Cornell U. http://instruct1.cit.cornell.edu/Courses/ns421/NS421.html (scroll down the bottom of the page as their homepage is kind of whacked) They recommend that men eat 5 to 6 meals a day and women eat 4 to 5 meals a day. I find that when I do this, that I do not get those cravings that often derail healthy eating and I am acually full throughout the day. As far as the ratio that I follow as to protien vs. carbs vs. fat, I try to maintain a 60 percent protien, 25 percent carbs, and 15 percent fat ratio. Your body needs carbs and fat for energy and healthy functioning but your body is also more likely to turn them into fat, that's why they recommend that you get as much protien as you can. I've found that protein shakes are an excellent way to up the protein in your daily intake without adding a lot of calories. Try to get your Carbs in the form of dietary fiber vs. sugar. You will find that you get plenty of sugar in your regular diet anyway and most food items now list the dietary fiber vs. sugar when they list the carbs in them. Also, try to get your sugars in the form of natural sugars vs. processed sugars. Plus, studies are showing that sugars feed cancer and may contribute to the develpment of cancer. The next piece of the puzzle is your metabolism. You need to keep your metabolism fired up in order to burn fat while you aren't exercising. There are many sites devoted to ways to do this but it basically comes down to this: Cut the things out of your life that artificially raise your metabolism (e.g. caffeine, sugars, etc) and start raising your metabolism naturally (e.g. eating smaller meals more frequently and getting up and moving about during the day) and most importantly, START BUILDING LEAN MUSCLE !!! Lean muscle burns fat. Period. It also is one of the only things that you can do for your body to keep yourself younger as you get older. There is a lot of talk about HGH (human growth hormone) and it's ability to keep your body young, increase lean muscle, decrease fat, improve eyesite, enhance sexual ability (my favorite, and it also burns calories ;) http://www.sexinfo101.com/se_index.shtml), etc... And it's all true. HGH is wonderful. Unfortunately, as we age, our HGH production goes down. You can boost it up again through HGH injections, but they are very expensive. -OR- you can make your body to produce more HGH naturally. HGH is produced in our muscles, therefore, to increase the HGH in your body, you need to add muscle. The best place to do this is in our major muscle groups. Primarily the legs as they contain the largest muscles in our bodies. Supplements - I take vitamins. Lot's of them. I believe that they help our bodies function better.Lastly, EXERCISE !!! Our favorite topic here. If your goal is to burn fat, then you should be working out at 70% to 80% of your max heart rate. Any higher and you start entering an anabolic vs. aerobic state and you start eating away at your muscle tissue instead of fat. This is called catabolism. Your muscles will initially use glycogen as a fuel and will then turn to your body stores for additional fuel. If you are working in your aerobic zone, it will turn to fat to get the energy. If you're working in an anaerobic zone then it will turn to your muscle for that energy. Finally, I usually do a 2 or 3 mile run an hour or so before bed. This way, I jack my metabolism up and I can burn fat while I'm sleeping. Your metabolism will stay fired up for 2 to 4 hours after exercise and what could be better than burning fat while you sleep ???!!!! If you have trouble falling asleep then you probably won't want to do this but if you've cut out the caffeine then you probably won't have that problem. Oh, and one more thing. Pheonix has already mentioned it also, but keeping track of your food is extremely helpful. BT.com has an excellent nutrition tracker that I have been using. I slacked off over the last couple of weeks but I am getting back on track now. Mostly because I didn't want to track all the Easter candy I've been uh... disposing of. I have a weakness for stale peeps :) . As always, your mileage may vary, but I've been on this rollercoaster ride way too many times and I've finally managed to figure things out. Essentially, what they've been saying all these years is true. Exercise and a good diet is the key to getting the weight off and keeping it off. I've just been too lazy to do it until now. I've got friends that have had great success on other diets, especially the Atkins diet, but they always end up putting the weight back on, plus more. Cripes !!! I almost forgot the most important piece of all. WATER !!! Make sure that you are drinking at least 8 8 oz. glasses of water a day. You're body needs a way to shed all of the excess fat and other stuff that you're trying to get rid of and the main way that it does this is through your natural elimination process. Personally, I drink about 8 to 10 liters a day but I'm also much bigger than most people so I can handle it. YMMV and after the hyponatremia issues we had a month or so back, you should be very careful not to consume too much water without adequate electrolyte supplementation. I'll mix in a gatorade or two throughout the day. I hope this info helps. Good Luck !!!! Sean

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() wow, cool cake. Happy birthday Quiana! You are just a baby, only 30 ! They told me it only gets better after 30; Im not sure I believe "them" yet, my 29th year was pretty hard to beat. But I think YOU are going to have a great year, you have so many great things to look forward- races and maybe babies! Im back to finish what I was going to say last post, about the professor's challenge to weigh in this Sunday. And what Mark said about not loosing one ounce since he started all this excercise. Im in the same boat, I can not seem to drop more than a pound or so, and then go right back up! If you looked at my training logs, you would think a FEW pounds would drop just based on the activity level alone. Im really trying not to eat any more because of training, and my diet definitely is not perfect but its not too bad. I have gone thru keeping food diaries and everything, and I really dont splurge that much. LAst summer though I lost 10 lbs while training for the half marathon, and I literally gained 5 back within the first 2 weeks after the race. And then the rest crept up all winter. I do eat things of course, but i Have cut so many things out, its really hard to cut out the last good stuff like (insert gourmet food item here- ie a beautiful Camembert cheese and fresh bread ). It sounds like a few of us are in that same boat- I go back and forth between telling myself I really need to just cut EVERYTHING good out and just forget about fresh crusty bread from the bakery etc, but then I think about how much good food is a part of my life and do I really need to deprive myself of it. The answer always come back to me : MODERATION. So, in short, after that whining, I realize that I really just need to moderate and even though I am completely scared of doing a weigh in with you guys on Sunday, Im really think I might do it. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wow Sean! Thanks! I've been putting on muscle weight, so that's good, but I've not been eating anywhere near enough protein. And I think I do anaerobic nearly all the time so I must eat up my own muscle, then work like crazy to build it only to eat it up again. I'll get on the protein shakes and stuff right away. And will try to slow down to aerobic. But I'm so slow as it is, that it is hard to go much slower. The asthma kicks me in the butt. It will take awhile to get my lungs conditioned. I have the asthma hypnosis tape now, but that will take about 21 days of continual listening before it takes effect. Someone emailed me and suggested acupuncture for asthma, but I can't fit it into my schedule. So I just try to pretend my lungs are FINE and just plow through stuff. But the run is SUPER hard for me because of them. Oh well. some day..... That's too bad about the cake. Well, I could TRY to bake you one, and one for Malph, and send them in the mail...........maybe just treat yourselves to a twinkie with a candle in it from me ![]() Rob--did you take notes on the sex part?????Hee, hee, just can't stop the flirting impulse. Must be all that muscle building that's creating unnatural amounts of hormones in me..................... |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi Sean- thank you for all the interesting info, I am going to incorporate this into my healthy living plan. Prof- It was great!!, You can do a mini tri but you need to schedule it in your planner in advance, If it's 2 or 3 weeks latter that's O.K. thats how I get my time in. BGT- Happy Birthday!!!! Cmckee-Thank you for your inspiriations Pene- What are the rollers called? I am stretching, Yoga is a lot more challenging than I would have thought. Clint- How is the recovery going? Watergirl- My right eye goggle keeps leaking water. is there a trick I can use to stop the water? After I start swimming I push hard on the eyepiece and it's fine again for awhile. Then the water comes again. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Pheonix - A general rule of thumb is that if you are working out at your max aerobic level, then you should still be able to hold a conversation albeit with moderate difficulty. If you are huffing and puffing, then you're muscles aren't getting the oxygen that they need and you will start to build up an excess of lactic acid which leads to muscle fatigue (e.g. "The Burn" Some runners use a rule-of-thumb that if you can easily carry on a conversation while running, then you're probably taking it too easy. If it is very difficult to carry on a conversation then you are probably working too hard. In between, if you can carry on a conversation with only a moderate amount of difficulty while running, than you're probably at the right level of exertion. I'm not entirely how this will translate to someone with asthma so your best bet would probably be to calculate your max heart rate and do it that way. At the very least, it should help you to gauge your level of exertion compared to the effect that your asthma is having on your workout.

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() BGT: Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Quiana, happy birthday to you. I’m afraid you’ll have to supply your own tune! Phoenix: I gave up tea and coffee as a result of excema (which I understand is related to asthma) and not only did my excema disappear but so did the mild asthma that I suffered from. I mentioned this to my Dad who has been, as he put it, prevented from being the international athlete that was his destiny, by the more serious asthma that he suffered from and, whilst it is now a bit late for him to take up a career as a long distance runner (he's 75) his asthma has almost completely disappeared! If you're nervous about losing the caffeine, green tea is loaded with the stuff. Sean: Thanks for the weight loss tips. Well researched and collated. A writer by profession maybe…? Watergirl, prof et al: I’m going to Hong Kong at the beginning of May for the month. A month of hotels and meetings await but I have a plan. Not only have I joined a gym for the month whilst I am there but I have also entered for the INATT Off Road Triathlon which is Hong Kong's first XTERRA-style off road triathlon: 750 meter sea swim, 15 km mountain bike and 5.5 km trail run. I have hired a mountain bike and don’t need a wet suit so my intention of imitating Sean’s swim will be denied me (thank God) but the rest will be a challenge. So, speaking of challenges, for those who want to, let’s follow Sean’s weight loss guide and weigh in every Sunday between now and June 10th which is almost two months and see what happens. I’ve never done anything other than work out harder and not eat junk food before so this will be interesting. Watergirl: Satan’s Dad lives in France most of the year, eats and drinks like a cheval et un poissons respectively, runs or cycles every day and looks like a whippet. He puts it down to not using his car so he will cycle to the supermarket (35 kms) and run to the baker (10 km) every day. If he doesn’t, he doesn’t get to eat like a horse and drink like a fish! Everyone finds their solution. Anyone else interested in a longer challenge. Warning: The weight of the participants may go up as well as down. You may lose that new wardrobe of clothes in the event of a failure to keep the weight off. |

After I start swimming I push hard on the eyepiece and it's fine again for awhile. Then the water comes again. Umm, do you have rubber or foam eyepieces? Have you looked at rim around it to make sure there isnt a small crack you cant see? foam eyepieces are notoriously hard to get a seal and can get little tears in them that you can't see. check your straps., they maybe looser on that side than the other? THats all I can think of. If they are nicer goggles (more than 10 bucks) than I would really try adjusting them. if they are cheaper, then think about investing in a new pair. My favorites are the Speedo Vanquisher (they even have a women's version that is great) and TYR Womens T-72. Dont laugh, I have 3 pairs of goggles right now. In case I loose one or one fails, like yours is! My favorite place to buy swim stuff online is swimoutlet.com . Its the best prices in general. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I NEVER can hold a conversation while running. Simply not possible unless I walk. THe kids try to talk to me and I huff out ''Can't talk" and then that effort makes it all even harder. It's really SAD! But I figure I'll never get anywhere at 4 mph. Anything greater than that and I'm huffing HARD. Give up coffee???? Oh mercy! How will I survive my day??? Well, if that's the only way....... Yes, I'm in for the weigh-in. Yikes. I like being in denial. This is sort of like weight watchers. Now I can't cheat. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Phoenix - You may not want to give up on the coffee. Coffee contains caffeine which is related to theophylline which is a known bronchiodialator. Either that, or caffeine itself is broken down into theophylline by the body. I can't remember which exactly. Your doctor can tell you more. There are studies that have show that 3 to 4 cups of coffee a day help to reduce the onset of asthma symptoms and in an emergency, strong black coffee can be taken to help an asthma attack. Sean |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sean, you are our resident biochemist!! Thank you so much for rescuing my coffee addiction! I just HAVE to consume at least one Starbucks mocha frappuccino a day or I go into withdrawal (crabby, morose, overwhelmed, even bitchy--not a good thing!) And congrats on the green star. Gotcha hooked, now, don't we! Jeannette--the rollers were all Sean's recommendation (he seems to be sort of smart....). I'm trying to remember the company....oh yes, Power Systems. I just ordered them online, plus some tapes--Pilates on a Roll, Rock and Roll Stretch. I actually put my S-I joint back into place one day using the big roller. Pretty cool. Mark, what's the longer challenge? Or do you mean weighing in each week for longer than June 10? I like the idea of being accountable with the weight thing. I'm so darn competitive, that this just might work...... |

Mark, what's the longer challenge? Or do you mean weighing in each week for longer than June 10? I like the idea of being accountable with the weight thing. I'm so darn competitive, that this just might work...... Guys I agree on the caffeine thing but green tea has that but without all the other crap that goes into highly processed and forced produce. Additionally recent research shows that tea's combination of natural caffeine and phytochemical antioxidants (called "catechins") is incredibly effective at promoting fat loss, mainly by elevating thermogenesis (body heat production). There is also evidence that chemicals in tea help to protect lean muscle tissue and stabilize blood sugar levels - not to mention boost your immune system, inhibit tumor growth, kill dangerous bacteria, and much, much more! Simply put, tea burns fat more efficiently than coffee and provides far more health benefits. Drink 2 strong cups of green tea half an hour before your workouts. You'll get the energy-boost of coffee as well as the fat-burning, muscle-saving, and health-promoting benefits of tea! I read it on the internet so it must be true! I thought the longer challenge would be to weigh in every week until June 10th. By then we should see some results if our resident biochemist can be believed. I don't believe this more exercise + less and better food = weight loss. I mean, if it worked, wouldn't more people be doing it. I'm going to wrap my head in the still drying skin of a freshly slain llama and chant my desired body weight in Sanskrit. It worked for my grandpappy and it'll work for me! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Oh this is tooo funny! The American coffee vs. British Tea debate!!! Okay, maybe Asian green tea debate, but you get the humor in the situation, I hope. Anyone from Boston??? I'm going to look up Kevin Trudeau's new book about resetting the hypothalamus. Because the hypothalamus controls: thyroid, adrenals (both of which are caput for me--I take thyroid meds and gave up trying to "heal" my thyroid with natural stuff. the adrenals are sort of so-so yet but I'm NOT taking the horrible meds for them!) Your thyroid controls metabolism, the adrenals put on the belly fat with stress! I don't have the belly fat, but my thighs are stubbornly clinging to little globs of fat that I HATE. Okay, I'm over it. Anyway, your hypothalamus is also a big EMOTIONAL center and controls APPETITE and even sex drive. I seem to have an abundance of emotions, appetite and sex drive, so I don't think I have a brain tumor like my dad, but I do think resetting the darn thing might be useful. And more pleasant than putting my head into a carcass and learning sanskrit at my age........ So, my conclusion here is that I'm not losing weight drinking Starbucks and my asthma is kicking my butt, so I'm gonna try Mark's green tea idea for a week. If I get crabby, morose, overwhelmed or bitchy on here, though, you guys just tell me to go out and get the darn starbucks and give you all a break--k? |

(no hate mail yet so I just keep posting away) THe more posts, the more stars. Nice pics there, Sean. Now who do we have left that remains faceless.....Prof, Mark, Kanders, Jeanette. I hate looking at my own mug, so I'll just wait until I actually do a race and someone bothers to photograph me huffing and puffing across the finish line, or emerging like a drowned rat from the lake, or on my bike, but I don't think I'd look very cute in my helmet, even if it does match my bike now....... See, I had my Starbucks for lunch so I'm still on my silly high from it ![]() |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ha ha ha... Easy with the inter-continental chemistry talk Phoenix or you'll have the DEA and other three-letter agencies knocking on my door. Actually, I'm a big green tea proponent myself. More for the anti-oxidants than anything else but Mark has re-kindled my interest in its other properties. I came across an article stating that white tea actually has all of the benefits of green tea in greater concentration. I drink a cup a day with some honey. Sounds like I may need to up my intake. Also, my tri photos have been posted on Fotojack. Here's the link. http://www.fotojack.com/photo/?race=882&sid=a5ec3d800c8c9d737636de96eb9c7fe0&pg=1&val=406&submit.x=0&submit.y=0 Thank God they didn't get any of me in the wetsuit... Sean |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It looks like you get a green star for every 25 posts and a pink star for every 100. So a pink with 3 greens would mean that you have posted at least 175 messages. Prof has 3 pinks and 3 greens with 380 posts. Phoenix has a pink and 3 greens with 177 posts. Mark will get his first pink in 2 more posts. C'mon Mark !!!! BGT get's her first pink in 3. C'mon BGT !!!
Mark or Prof - How in the hell do you include the original post in the reply with that vertical bar ? I've looked around but cannot find it as a setting.
