Expert 642 | Subject: RE: Totally Nutty Triathletes (TNT) Okay, I decided to cancel the White House tour tomorrow. Too much going on for me to spend so much time in DC with kids who are STILL not sleeping (it's 10:15 p.m. and they have 7:30 and 9:00 p.m. bedtimes!). It's a self-guided tour anyway. My 2 year old won't give a crap and my 9 yr old will probably be bored to tears. Anyway, the good news is I'll get to put in my workout tomorrow morning!!! |

Expert 642 | Subject: RE: Totally Nutty Triathletes (TNT) Okay, I have a big question to ask you guys. As I mentioned above, I'm in the weight loss challenge on this website. I have struggled with my weight my entire life and I know some of you are extremely knowledgeable in this area so I have a question for you (I asked this in my weight loss thread but obviously we all need help in this area so maybe some of you can answer this...) I figured my daily caloric needs by: BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) x Activity factor = daily caloric needs 1620.4 x 1.6 = 2592 calories (let's round to 2600 for easy math) To lose 2 lbs/week (1 lb = 3500 calories) I need to have a calorie deficit of 1000 calories/day For my weight (rounded numbers for easy math) 60 minute bike riding at 14-16 mph = 1000 calories 60 minutes swimming at moderate pace = 500 calories 60 minutes running at 6 mph = 1000 calories Got those from: http://www.healthstatus.com/calculate/cbc So, exercising 1 hour on the bike daily should give me the 1000 cal deficit and I should lose 2 lbs that week. SO, HERE IS MY QUESTION.... WHY THEN do I NOT lose weight when I'm eating 1300-1400 calories routinely and exercising 1-1 1/2 hours/day???? It seems when I eat MORE (i.e. 1600-1700 cals/day) I tend to lose. I'm so confused by this whole thing. Why can't I be one of those fat people that start walking for exercise and start dropping the weight???!!! I work my BUTT off but my BUTT never comes off!!!*** It's so frustrating. ***I really don't want to be one of those people because I know I am much healthier because of what I do and I really do love what I'm doing it's just really frustrating to work so hard and see such little progress. I've been overweight my whole life and in the "obese" category for many years. |

I figured my daily caloric needs by: BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) x Activity factor = daily caloric needs 1620.4 x 1.6 = 2592 calories (let's round to 2600 for easy math) So, to answer your question....WITH activity (i.e. "activity factor" - this is an average of about 5-6 days/week workout). I have heard "don't go below 1200 cals/day." Does this mean that if I eat 1500 cals/day and burn off 1000 cals/day then 500 cals/day is less than 1200 cals/day and my body is in "starvation/survivial" mode? In other words - at what point (calorie wise) does my body go into starvation mode? Edited by dcrunningdiva 2008-06-10 9:52 PM |

TinkerBeth 23096 Liverpool, New York | Subject: RE: Totally Nutty Triathletes (TNT) Yikes! that is way over my head - truthfully I've been struggling with the same questions for years for me WW has worked, it is not based on calorie intake, but on balance between food and activity I am not advocating WW as being the answer for everyone, it has worked for me You may want to post some questions in the Tri'ing for weight loss forum or in Nutritional Cafe or both you would probably get some great insights |

Extreme Veteran 395 San Diego | Subject: RE: Totally Nutty Triathletes (TNT) Tracy, I wonder if your body has normalized between caloric intake and activity? I was in the same boat amd my weight loss had stopped. I was eating 3x per day and not snacking. The trainer at the base gym switched me to eating 6x per day at the same caloric intake and I started to lose weight again. She said that eating 6 small meals kept your metabolism up and did not allow your body to store the calories that it did not need immediately. |
