Lisa - I'm so sorry about your injury! That is quite a bummer - but I'm glad you've found a doctor that is listening to you.  I think if I were you, I'd be tempted to continue training up until Eagleman too, especially since you're emotionally invested since you had to bag it last year... That doesn't mean it's the smartest thing to do, but I'd probably do it too

If it makes you feel any better - I think A-Rod has the same injury as you? Is this the same thing you're having?  He's not having surgery for now either...

 http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601079&sid=aYnLHHzX3mkc&refer=home

Today was another long-haul Thursday for me, and it felt great.  I really get a lot of stress-relief out of the intense workouts.  This morning, I got in 9.4 miles in 90 minutes.  I did the first three miles easy at 6.0, then worked up each mile (6.2, 6.4, 6.6, 6.8, 7.0) until mile 8, then did the last mile and change slow at 5.5ish... I love increasing speed on runs like that! It was also good to know that I can do 9.4 and not die - I think I'll make it through Cherry Blossom next month with minimal tweaking to the training schedule.

The weirdness of the day happened at the pool - I was tired, but I made it out there anyway. Supposed to warm up, do 10x100, then cool down.  My first 4 100's I was ON FIRE (for me at least!) and did them all in 1:38. Exactly - they were all exactly the same. I think 1:38 is a record for me The next bunch were all between 1:40 and 1:44 - which is still really fast for me. And I pushed hard on the last one and made it in 1:38 again. I was making a real effort to keep my head straight down (like Grace? Mindy? mentioned the other day). I don't know what else was different, but I'm usually between 1:46-1:55 for these, so I was moving today Maybe I need to run 9.4 miles every morning!

I'm in my last class before spring break right now! I have to take an ethics exam Saturday morning, and Saturday afternoon I'll be getting in a 2 hour ride in the coming 60-degree weather Then Sunday morning, bright and early, I'll be jetting off to Costa Rica! Just luckily, next week is supposed to be a step-back/rest week for me, requiring only 5.5 hours. So I'll be just jogging/swimming in the pool at the resort

Blue & Stressed Grace has the blues too. She went for a Green Card interview with Spencer on Monday and was told by a representative of the US goverment that 'Congratulations, you will receive your green card in 7-10 days'. At that time, Exhilarated Grace celebrated the end of her 8 month LimBo and cheered FINALLY being able to apply for work and drive here in the US of A.

Then on Tuesday the US Govt calls Exhilarated Grace and informs her that her application is likely to be denied afterall, and she will likely be DePorTed.

So after $2000 in application fees, 8 months of lost income, no drivers license, no work permit, and faced with DeporTation, Blue & Stressed Grace is VENTING. Cry

If any kind soul wants to brighten Blue Grace's day, visit http://gracestribulations.blogspot.com/and click on an ad. 1 cent will bring Smiley Gracie back!

Grace - I'm so sorry you're stuck in this bureaucratic nightmare! I hope things get straightened out soon. Is Spencer a US citizen? I didn't know it was so hard for spouses to get green cards!

And you're from Malaysia? That's super cool! I studied abroad in Singapore for a semester during college - though I only made it to Malaysia three times: once to JB (ok, that probably doesn't count ), once to KL, and then once to visit Taman Negara Beautiful!

JESS -

Glad you're back, too, and that your recent pressures are lifting!

Really quickly:
(1) Mighty fine run progression!
(2) Mighty, mighty fine swim sets!! If you go to the forum at www.slowtwitch.com, there is a thread about how people have fared following some of the suggestions made by Gary Hall Sr. a week or two ago. One of the common reasons for improvement that people talk about is keeping their head way down -- so you're in very good company! (If you want to find Mr. Hall's original thread, which he posted on Feb 17, its title is "Struggling with the swim? Here are some good tips". It went on for 12 pages of discussion, whereas the new follow-up thread is just in its second page.)
(3) Either tomorrow or Monday I will be sending some stuff your way, and as it will be going via USPS, you should see it within a few days of it being sent. I will tell you when I mail it.

Lisa, you are an inspiration no matter what you decide to do.  I don't think I would have lasted  1+ years exercising in pain and probably would have taken your first diagnosis as permission to go back to my couch potato ways.  Good luck!

LISA -

I've been to the pool four staright days, so it's an unswim day for me today.

Are you going to try the tennis-ball-under-the-chin tactic, or just the look-straight-down approach? I am definitely interested in the tennis ball thing, as it would be impossible to keep it there if the head rotates independent of the rest of the body..........so, it would seem to enforce an optimal body roll. Let me know how it goes for you!

I saw the original Gary Hall thread when it started, but then disappeared from slowtwitch almost immediately, not returning for any length until yesterday. I used to have a serious slowtwitch addiction, and then about three years ago went pretty much cold turkey for quite a while. I've started going back to it a bit more over the past 6 months or so, but I tire quickly of the people who are either negative or spend all of their time posturing. There is some phenomenal info that comes out of it, however, so it is probably worth your time hanging out there.

Visit the Lavender Room at some point -- it was set up about five years ago because there was far too much off-topic stuff on the main tri forum. Pretty much anything and everything is discussed there, and the political/cultural/spiritual discussions can go on forever. It is a hoot in its own quirky way - but maybe no more than any of the hundreds of "free speech" venues that I guess are available on the Internet. I try to stay away from the Lav Rm, though, as I just don't need to waste my time following the battles.

I never keep the same user name for all that long at slowtwitch. Over time I have been unwound third, longspur, groove time!, bigskies, hog's back, gravitysrainbow, and a whole bunch more, along with the current syncopated. Grace has her multiple personalities, I have my identity crises!

LISA again -

So, did you wake up this morning feeling all exhilarated and empowered by your decision to make it through at least Eagleman? I would think so!

I'm still on the fence about Columbia. I need the Achilles problem to begin to resolve, but if it doesn't soon then I think I will bail on it just to get back the $85 refund. I made it through all of last season with my foot taped during every run and every race due to my plantar fasciitis problem, but the Achilles is nothing that can be eaily taped.; so, we'll see.

Injury management - pain management - is in itself an empowering activity, or so I fine. I never feel in complete control of the situation, but the combination of being smart about an injury and developing an approach to accommodating it, or working around/through it, is quite heady -- when it actually succeeds! Re-reading your posts on your hip, it is hard to ignore the optimism of your doctor. Plus, watching sports this morning, what Brian Cashman (Yankees GM) was saying about the options for A-Rod sounded just about exactly the options that were presented to you. That was kind of uncanny, almost deja vu.

You and A-Rod. Sheesh. I mean, you're you, but he's A-Rod: New York Yankee, drug cheat, sleazoid womanizer. The last two are pretty awful, but the one that really ruins him for me is that he is a Yankee! Now THAT'S being the lowest of the low!

I'm at my old school now, looking to socialize with my former associates -- and they're all in an after-school staff meeting. On a Friday! How rude!

So, in the absence of humanoids, I'm here on one of the school computers, having finished a fairly long and somewhat pleasant lifting session.

The only visitor since I left home a few hours ago is Sax, who apparently is back to being upright and mobile. Congrats, Neil, on ridding yourself of the Pacific crud! And good luck with the run and swim; I hope you don't have to bail on either.

JESS! -

Your package has been mailed, and as it's going by USPS Priority Post, you might start looking for it on Tuesday. Ta-da!

Aside from the headaches of crossing the border, it is so much less expensive mailing stuff from the U.S. than from Canada. There are many, many good aspects of life in Canada ---- but the postal system is not one of them.

OH MAN - I agree with that! I don't know if I mentioned this - but I went to McGill, so I spent three years in Montreal.  In 2004, I requested an absentee ballot for the presidential election.  I brought it to the post office in MTL to mail back to NJ... Because it was an absentee ballot, it had the polling center location on the FRONT of the envelope, and my home address (permanent residence) on the BACK of the envelope.  Somehow, Postes Canada got confused and mailed the ballot back to my home address.  My mom got it, was confused, opened it and voided my ballot.  So my vote didn't count in the 2004 election because of them!!!

Ok back to studying ethics.  I took this test in the fall, and received a passing score for the vast majority of states, but for some reason, NY requires a higher score. I was 1 question away from passing NY last time, and I don't want to ever see this test again!

Ouch. That's one of the worst Postes Canada stories I've heard! (And I've heard lots of 'em.)

The most galling part of the whole thing is that, back in the 70s and 80s, there were lots of strikes by the various branches of the posties. Form a labor-supporter's perspective I'm generally glad that their demands were met........but it would've been SO nice if improved service was part of the settlements. But, NOOOOOOOO!!

the best part of mailing stuff from Rosseveltown, NY, where I keep a p.o. box, is that one of the regulars there calls me "dear" or "my dear" - it almostmakes me feel like an appreciated member of the general population! (I suppose she says it to all the elders [I must out-age her by a good 15 years!])

Ny's educational standards are quite high, what with the Regents Exams for high-schoolers, so it doesn't really surprise me that their passing score is higher than it is for most states. Does that make you unable to practice law in NY, or do you have another shot at it at some point - even though you say you never want to see that test again!

Overall, did Montreal agree with you?

GRACE -

One of the services I provide as a Full Service Mentor is the transcribing of poems that happen to have a mentee's name in it. The following is from a collection of James Tate poems titled "Selected Poems". The following poem is specifically from his 1967 book, "The Lost Pilot".

Grace

The one thing that sustained
the faces of the four
corners of the intersection

did not unite them,
did not invite others to join.
Their inner eyes as the light

changed did not change,
but focused madly precise
on the one thing until

it scared them. Then
they all went to the movies.
I was just beginning

to understand when one
who represented the desperate
shrunken state came toward

me, bisecting the whole mass
of concrete into triangles;
and handed me a package.

I carried it with me for
the rest of my life, never
opening it, telling no one.

i think i have decided to do my races through the eagleman for the following reasons.......

7.) if i have it during the summer i can just spend my free time sunning myself by the pool (and look hot in my bikini since I will be in good shape)...my decision would be completely different if i thought i would do more harm before june, but after telling my doctor i was registered for spring races he said, "if i were you, I would wait until after.  you'll be fine."

LISA,

Wow you are one tough cookie monster. I really admire your ability to work through pain, even with the anti inflammatories, it still hurts like hell.

We'll all be lookin hot in our bikinis this summer yay! Spencer says I have a 4 pack now hee heee
