No real tricks that I use.  Usually in a day or 2 they become tolerable

7 mile run in before work today. That leaves 5 to go to reach 100%.

Awesome! Way to go!

running4beer - 2009-06-24 3:17 PM I'm approaching the moment of truth here-- one doc says I need ankle surgery (for recurring peroneal subluxation), but I'm getting a second opinion in about an hour.  Funny thing is that as soon as I started to entertain surgery, my gimpy ankle didn't seem to bother me all that much!  Although I have been limiting my mileage, so that could be it, too...

Good luck.  Hope you get some good news.

Good enough.  Here's what the doc said:
1. You still need the surgery (otherwise you'll have future sprains, falls, potential break or tear and all around instability if you continue running)
2. You do not need the surgery now (suggestion was to wait until winter when my office wouldn't dare make me come in when it snows)
3. The guy who's gonna do your surgery is one of the best in the country (if he or his wife needed surgery, he would go to my surgeon)
4. Jeebus H Criminey... how the hell did you make it this far without orthotics?  (a.k.a. you NEED custom orthotics)
5. Orthotics will help your knees, but also mean it is more likely to roll to the outside again, which is your problem (a.k.a. be CAREFUL, and still have the surgery soonish)

Sooooo... either I keep my surgical date next month, or postpone to Dec or Jan and just shell out $300 for orthotics since they aren't covered by my insurance.  I'm trying my DARNDEST to not just start immediately planning my summer tris and thinking about this rationally.

toddg - 2009-06-25 12:54 PM Checking the spreadsheet a few people need some serious tasering to get their mileage in. C'mon team get those legs moving if you're not on goal pace.

Hold off on the tasering!  I'm running tonight... even though it's *gasp* like 80+ degrees and humid out.  (I know, I'm a wimp.)

Seeing the motivational effects of a taser threat makes me smile

PS - he taped my feet last night, so I'm curious how much taping will help in the meantime. Going out for a run after work to test that.

For those of you who may have forgotten here is the team spreadsheet

Hopefully you've been running but not logging

And since he taped my feet and I couldn't get em wet, I bailed on an OW swim (it was rainy and yucky out, anyway) and instead had Chicken Rollatini (chicken wrapped around spinach, prosciutto and provolone) a cannoli and a couple IPAs for dinner at one of my fav local places down the street from me.

I think I walked a half mile there and back, tho.  Can I log that?

Hmmmm....quite the quandry.  If someone told me I could wait till winter and still run until then that's probably what I would do.  But then again, I'm young, brash, and impulsive

Ha! Me too!  Which is why I was all set to have the surgery asap, so I could get on with things.  And I love running in the winter and snowboarding, and if I did have surgery in the winter, I would be so much more homebound than any other time to be on crutches.

And how the heck am i supposed to run off my Thanksgiving and Xmas dinners and parties in a cast?

Really, there's no good time.  I'm just trying to figure out which is less depressing.  Maybe January... and then I'll get my BF Tivo for Xmas... Tongue out

What kind of recovery time are they projecting?  I was thinking you could squeeze in a couple of tris over the summer, have surgery in the fall, then be ready to hit the hills once the snow starts falling.  Of course, anything longer than 8 weeks and that won't work.

Would seem logical, but my birthday's in Sept, my BF's is in Oct and our anniversary is in Nov, so I was thinking that any or all of those would be unfavorable times to be in a cast, but I guess it's still an option.

First, I had to google this, to see what it was.
http://www.eorthopod.com/public/patient_education/6581/peroneal_ten...

Second, I need to mention that I avoid doctors whenever possible. (As in, I've had shoulder issues for almost two years. But I'm optimistic that it'll get better someday. )

Hm. I think some people are in serious need of the cattle prod. (We've moved beyond tasers at this point. It's June 25th.)

Ouch....

"Patients who have surgery are usually placed in a short-leg cast for six weeks. A special walking boot is then worn for another four weeks. Patients usually start formal physical therapy once the cast is removed. Rehabilitation after surgery can be a slow process. You will probably need to attend therapy sessions for two to three months, and you should expect full recovery to take up to six months."

Yeah, not sooo bad.  They typically now do 4wks in a hard cast, 2 in a walking boot then another 3 weeks in PT before starting to run, so 2-3 months of downtime, not 6.

Yeah with 2-3 months of downtime there is no real good time, especially if you like to hit the slopes in the winter.

Maybe just get it over with and out of the way.....

Hey guys. No running today but I have 5 miles scheduled tomorrow. I think I'll sneak another bike in too. It's so much nicer biking here than in NYC.

Speaking of biking, I forgot to post my HHH RR so I put it up today finally!
