Barely slept last night cuz of spidy senses tingling... How stpid was that cuz' I had a friggen' blast today!  Stuck in the last wave didn't help with nerves but (like Tim said I would) I killed the swim... totally mashed the bike... and as expected, the run hurt me... but I held out in a 1/4 mile sprint battle to save 2nd place in my AG.  [\ QUOTE]

Awesome work!

If you don't mind sharing, what AG? And, what was your OA result?

Anything you would like to change for your next race?

It's a new day.  I'm going to take some time off the intense workouts.  Maybe just lift weights and some light swimming or something for a week.  I'm going to try and look at the bright side.  Which is, even though I felt terrible, I still shaved 10 minutes off my time on the same course last year

Like we talked about before, comparing your times is a better benchmark than standings. So, good job. Just think how much faster you would of been if you stayed on the bike !

As for the training, remember every workout can't be intense. You need to vary intensity, volume, and have periodization (falling back).

Good morning everyone! I got home from Wildflower late last night and need to catch up on the last few days of posts but wanted to give you all a quick race report.

There are definitely some things I can work on but I'm happy with the results. My overall time was 2:50:44. I was competing mostly against 3 other friends and ended up beating all of them. Second place was 11 minutes back actually...so the target is on my back for sure.

Swim: I'm capable of going faster. I didn't get into a good pace until half way, choppy water for first half, hard to sight on the bouys.

Bike was 1:27:44. Ugh...hills! I kept thinking it would be mostly rollers with one or two climbs. They were BIG rollers. I traded spots with a couple guys - they would pass on the hills, I would pass on the descents. This tells me I need to build strength in my legs to spin up the hills easier.

Run...It was HOT. And HILLY. Up, up, up, the whole damn way. Again, lack of leg strength. The last mile of the run is down Lynch Hill. The problem is, it's so steep that it's not an enjoyable downhill run. A friendly spectator handed me half a PBR which I gladly accepted, generating a "chug, chug, chug" chant from the crowd. Run time was 51:37.

Yep, I've heard that the course has some "fun" hills. Sounds like you had a good time. Hmmm, if you could drink that "PBR" without heaving, then I think you could of been running harder!

brick94513 - 2010-05-02 5:16 PM Well... this was probably the hardest race I have ever done! I completed 11 laps, which is 135 miles and 18700 ft of climbing. I could of gone one more lap, but it would of been useless since I couldn't catch the guy in front of me. I learned a lot. I'll share the experience when I get home. I'm thoroughly beat!

Tim,

That's pretty darn impressive -- 135 miles and over 3.5 of climbing.

Guess we'll forgive you for not going one more lap!

Hahaha... I came close to losing it out there (mentally). In all honesty, one of the things that kept me going was not wanting to come back here to this thread and tell you guys I didn't go for it.

When I finished my 11th lap, I went to the results table to see where I stood. The guy in front of me had already completed 11 and was back on the course. I had three laps on the guy behind me. At that point, I made the decision to call it a day.

Question for the experts here:

Should I hire a tri coach? I feel like I'm stumbling around in the dark in terms of what I should be doing training-wise. I love triathlons and plan to continue doing them as long as my body will let me.

Wow, all caught up for now.

Rest day for me. Well, kind of anyways. Got to work this morning and found out we were hose testing today. So, spend most of the day dragging hose around. Mark, I know you can appreciate that!

Hmmm.... It really comes down to goals and costs in my opinion. I have not used a tri coach. However, I have felt it necessary to use a swim coach to obtain results.

Coaches can tailor a plan to you. They also, depending on their expertise, can provide nutritional information and give you someone to direct your concerns and frustrations. There are different levels of coaching available from "in-person" to Internet based. On the other hand, there are many available triathlon plans. These free plans are very generic and don't specifically address your weaknesses.

This is what has worked for me. I took a generic plan as a template then made a compilation of three different plans. For example, I use a half-marathon running plan from Runner's World, but have adjusted pace based on my own LTHR. As for cycling, I like to let my volume ebb and flow based on my upcoming event. I personally don't like a lot of structure here. Again, I base my workouts on LTHR, support my weekly long ride with weekly mileage, and take trainer drills from USAT and JorgeM here on BT. Swimming is a little different. This is my Achilles heel, so I try to be in the water 3 - 4x week.

Sorry, I didn't mean for this to be about me. I was just trying to illustrate how you can create your own plan. There is a plethora of information available. It just depends on how much time you want to spend.

Finally, there is one other option and that is a local triatlon club. If available, this is an excellent way to go. You will not only get instruction, but gain the camaraderie of others at different levels of ability.

Mark, Jay, or anyone else with military experience, I'm looking for some advice here. I want to ride my next 24 hour race as a fundraiser for disabled veterans that have served our country so proudly. I've currently looked at the following:

www.woundedwarriorproject.org
www.homesforourtroops.org

Do you have an opinion? What other organizations do you recommend?

I need to pound this into my head somehow.  I seem to have one speed sometimes.  I'll have to look for some sort of training program that specifies intensity levels and stick to it.  Right now though, it's a few days rest I think.

thanks

Nope, just got the wife some race tires.  She runs a 650 so I just got some since they were almost out.  Got a shipment email this morning, we'll see how long it takes to get across the pond.

Wounded Warrior Project gets my vote.  There are a number of Marines who are able to still serve on active duty because of it.  But honestly, supporting ANY of these organizations earns you a gold star :D

Morning Team... Catching up on the forum while having my oatmeal.  Back at it today with Masters Swim.  It's testing day at the pool so it will be brutal getting back on the horse.  Hope to have enough left to get in a good run afterwards.  Tomorrow I plan to do the Bike and Run on the Encinitas Sprint Tri race course which is two weeks away.  This weekend I have a 5K fun trail race with my little one.  She is stoked because she now has her own Race Bib Belt (thanks to High Tech Bikes).

Tim-  I'm a 45-49 AG... What I need to do "better" is 1) SWIM faster 2) BIKE faster 3) RUN faster (X2), and 4) TRANSITION faster.  The RUN was the key discriminator in this race which totally sucks a$$ because I am limited by the CECS.  I killed the guy who took 1st in both the swim and bike but his run time was epic.  At the awards ceremony people from the club were telling me the dude shouldn’t still be doing the short course and he sandbags for the podium.  I cut that crap short though as "it is what it is"... bottom line is I should have been faster.

Trina- For what it's worth... I know how you feel about feeling kind of lost.  I joined a local Tri Club and now have lots of access to USAT Coaches who provide information, give me direction, and its free.  Between the club and this forum I no longer feel like I am lost, but now wish I was independently wealthy so I could train - train - train.

Regarding Veteran charitable organizations... I am partial to supporting the following organizations: Special Operations Warrior Foundation, Naval Special Warfare Foundation, Wounded Warriors Project and Soldiers Angels.  My Fire Service charities of choice are Firefighters Cancer Support Network, Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund, and San Diego Firefighters Emerald Society.  I am dedicating each race event to a charity and that gives me my motivation.  The next step is developing a fundraising mechanism that doesn’t dictate where the funds generated go.

Thanks for the input re: coach, guys. I am finding that just getting feedback on this forum helps with most training questions, but there are times when I am just scratching my head. Given that I'm new to this sport, I do have a lot of questions and with the injury I have that makes things even more complex. I joined my local Tri club, but so far this year they haven't been very active - at least in terms of having meetings or on their internet forum. Shoot - they haven't even had their first OWS....I had to go to do one by myself in preparation for Lonestar.

I think I will just consult with a coach on what he/she thinks I need in terms of coaching with the budget I have.

If your set on a coach, you can find some links here on BT:

settings>training log settings>find a coach.

Look around, talk to them, see who you can mesh with.

I'm a little confused about how to finish up my training before my Xterra.  The tri is on May 23, so I essentially have the rest of this week, next week, and the week after to train.  What threw a wrench the race last week and being sick this week.  My plan is to do base training the rest of this week, when I feel better.  Then jump into a build week.  Lastly, taper before the race.  My question is, being I was sick should I even bother bumping intensity before this race?  Should I just put in easy miles before the race so I don't slip back into a funk?  Or just stick to the plan?  Any opinions?

Personally, I would keep your workouts pretty much steady-state with maybe a slight increase in volume for week 2. The benefits really don't outweigh the risks at this point to be ramping up intensity. I would rather spend my time on technique, transitions, drills, and light, lower intensity workouts. Sometimes less is more. Go into the race fresh and without pain or soreness.

If I did that ride,  I'd know the Pizza Dilevery dude by name by now LOL!!!  I know a few times after I did long runs up to 15 miles I'll shower and be at the Pizza place in an hour.  I usually order the Right side of the menu and a Diet Coke Laughing

I did a 3.5 mile treadmill run with big Hill walks up to 15% grade.  Tomorrow is another gym day for me.  Good Night all!!
