lamb_y2003 - 2011-01-21 7:41 AM Mike, I'm in the same boat as you except my HM is in May (HIM is in Sept. like yours).  I'm working on base fitness for the bike right now so just spinning for an hour 3x/week.  I have swimming with my tri club twice a week so I go to that and don't worry about swimming.  And I'm following a HM training plan that's 4x/week to focus on that for now.  My left knee is giving me some trouble so I may end up bailing on my HM if necessary because my HIM is my 'A' race and I'd rather go slowly and build so I'm healthy & ready on that day.  I hope not though as running is my weakness and I think doing that HM would give me a lot of confidence.

My vote is to incorporate swimming and biking around your current run-focus.  You have loads of time later (spring/summer) to build up your speed & endurance for those two and back off a little on your running.  I think I'm going to follow the BT plan but maybe keep my long runs a bit longer since I will have built up so much and don't want to lose that fitness.

In totally unrelated news, I got moved up to a faster lane in the pool on Wednesday.  I gather this is pretty rare and I got a standing ovation.  My goal is to move up one more by the end of the indoor season (beginning of June).  That'll put me in with the big fish, so to speak.  I'm ridiculously proud.  LOL!

As you should be!!! It is always exciting to see progress.

Great ride today.  It was the hardest hill climbing I have ever done.  At one point I was inthe easiest gear and standing up and only going 4mph.  It was hard, but afterwards it is exactly what I needed to build my strength mentally and physically.

Sounds awesome...we don't get hills like that around here.  The only hills I see are in spin class lol.  And i like being lazy, but i feel when I get no release.  I'm excited for my 14 tomorrow, ran the same last week and this week i'm hoping to bring my dog for all 14.  Good luck to him!

A bit of an IBS injury the past few days but no big deal. Thought about giving it a day off today but decided to just spin easy instead. Wow, what a difference easing back just a bit does. I barely sweat at all, my HR was like 120 (usually 140ish) and I could have gone forever. Gave the knee a good ice, and am ready for a swim and 6 mile easy run tomorrow!

Have fun tomorrow everyone!!!!

After three months in the pool, I finally found the pocket of air to breath from!!!

I've been looking for it, thought I'd found it, but today during my 2500 yards, I was doing some 100 meter stroke drills (25-breath, 25-reach, 25-turn, 25-high elbow) and all of the sudden I found it. Seems like I needed to drop my forehead a bit during the turn to create the wake. Distance 100's have been around 1:45, and today I probably found two or three seconds with this breakthrough.

Woohoooooo :-)

I caught the last 5min of Q2 and am seeing all of second half...so it's a win for me.  Decided to play credit card roulette with a group of 12 today at lunch and lost  Never playing this stupid game again...

It's really nice to lie in bed and watch football after this type of run.  I'm totally going to do dinner in bed.

I sure didn't feel like this week was a very productive recovery week every one of my workouts seemed like work really felt like I was going backwards.

So today was suppose to be my 35mile ride, But I just don't have any energy after yesterdays trip.  So I am going to take an extra rest day today because I it looks like start into the meat of the plan. More distance.
I hope I am making the right decision. Biking and running are my strongest so missing a bike I don't think will matter as much as swimming. I just didn't have the mental strength either especially when I was trying to figure out routes trying to find someone to ride with and every excuse in the book. So I laid downstairs watching football with my son and sleeping through the games.

Basic question here -- when the plann says "Kick" for a swim drill/set, what are they talking about? I've seen/done/read about several "kick" drills, so which one is this? Also, does "Pull" mean use a pull bouy? thanks!

Ugh, I hate the kickboard. I'm *so* slow with it. Slow to the tune of 50 seconds/25 yards slow.

Taking an extra rest day when you feel the need is NEVER the wrong decision. That is the sign of a healthy mental attitude that can do what's right instead of what you think you are SUPPOSED to do because everyone will tell you to HTFU.  I am glad you had a nice rest day...and it's totally normal to feel like heck on recovery weeks and have trouble motivating yourself.

You could also do side swimming drills where you put your arms out in front of your head and kick down the pool on your side. No need for a kickboard!

Most of my "kick" drills involve ramping up my kick effort and slowing down my pull effort. It seems to do the same thing as with the kick board.

Pull drills may or may not include a pool buoy. If you have the core strength and balance to keep your legs vertical during your swim, you can just relax the back half and pull with the front.

Soooo true!  Best advice!  I was sooooo down in the dumps after my Half mary the other week.  The few days off were just what I needed to be mentally ready to get back out there.  Finished out the week strong (thanks in BIG part to JG) and feel good again.  Besides...watching football is a perfect way to spend a rest day.

x INFINITY!!!

Rest day is the second most important day of the train week after the long bike/run.

I myself has taken two rest days last week which was Tuesday and Saturday.  Saturday wasn't really a rest day since it was walking all day during the Endurance Expo in San Diego which was followed by a 50mile ride with the cycling club.  Ride with a cycling club guys.  It will motivate you big time!!!

I decided to take today as an off day as well since the thighs are hurting after pulling and trying to hang with the group yesterday.

Take rest days as needed if you ask me.

Just had a great 65 min / 9 mile run on the waterfront in Hong Kong! But I am stressing over missed workouts while I am traveling for work. Between time zone changes and long plane trips it is hard to get motivated. The swim seems to be the toughest. Anyone have any advise on how to cover weeks while traveling? Or what to do with missed workouts?
