Wilson - About the lube for the wet suit...I'm going to use whatever kind I can find that gets me OUT of that particular piece of clothing the fastest! hahaha....now I sound like a man on a cheap date!!......or maybe Wilson trying to butter up his wife to let him buy a new tri bike!! LMAO

I have a fan club??! Hmmmm....food for thought since I was born in the great state of NH....

Shawn - and anyone else who has the proverbial love/hate thing going on with food....let's start this thing TOMORROW!! So, by Monday night, say 9 pm CST? we've sent the other person a PM or inspire w/our food and liquid intake for the day??

Haven't seen the real shirt yet since Hilde was so much speedier than my husband yesterday at the Tour....What's funny about that is that I have been telling my husband that Hilde is a BEAST on the bike. I think he may finally believe me!! LOL

Mother's Day was nice, told my husband to just 'pretend' that he does not want to kill our 2 teenage boys...just for me for the day. Tomorrow is a new day and one that means I have to RUN!!

Been reading all the posts about Indy ... I'm jealous!  Wish I could join you.  Frown  Couldn't afford the shirt either -- boohoo.  Hubby and I have been doing a financial class (Dave Ramsey's Financial Peach University) so all of a sudden he cares how much I've been spending on tri stuff and races!  Good thing I got the new bike in before we started budgeting!  I'll probably be lucky to get my goal of 5 races in this year.  We have a Jeff Galloway marathon group starting at a local running store in June to train for a marathon next winter.  I REALLY want to do it as I'm losing my running partner sometime this year .. my daughter is hoping to get a job in Boston (she just graduated with her masters in social work) boohoo.  I'll miss my training partner.  I don't know how you folks do a long run without someone to talk to and distract you from how far you're running!  Thus the desire for this running group.  It's $170! (but I think I can slip that in somehow ...)  The biggest drawback is the fact that they train on Tues/Thurs at 4:45 a.m. and Sat at 3:45-6:00 a.m. depending on how long the long run is!!!  I thought I've been doing good to get up at 5:30 but 4:30 or 3:30??!!  Whew ... that would mean I'd have to go to bed at 9:00 and I'm not too sure my DH who is a night owl could tolerate that (sometimes he doesn't even get home from work till 9:00).

I don't know what to do .....  how do you folks ever get a long run in by yourself!?

Marsha - great-looking 10-miler!  You'll do fine on the HM.

Hilde & Tammy - awesome job on 55 miles on the bike - 15 mph pace, Hilde, totally awesome!  I couldn't even hit that for 14 miles with hills.  Can't believe you got up to 45 mph max, that sounds scary to me.  I wimp out going downhill ... scared to get going too fast.

Peggy, I have NEVER had anyone to run with so I think I qualify as an expert in this area.  Get yourself an MP3 player and load up on podcasts!  I listen to a variety of NPR and PRI shows.  Topics include short stories (Selected Shorts, and New Yorker fiction), economics (Planet Money), Science (Radio Lab), Spirituality (On Being), Current topics (Studio 360), Sexuality (Savage Love ... take it easy Wilson), Running (Phedippidations), Language (Way with Words), and others Third Coast audio,  The Moth, This American Life, I've probably forgotten some.  Anyway, you get the picture.  It keeps my mind occupied and I manage to learn stuff too.  Sometimes I also load up orchestral music that I should be practicing on my trombone.  I'm sure I am the only person who has ever ran for 20 miles while listening to a Mahler symphony over and over in a continuous loop.  By the end of the 20 miles I pretty much knew my part even though I didn't have a trombone in my hand!  Sometimes I think it would be nice to have someone to talk with but this way I can take walk breaks when I need them and soldier on at my pace and not someone else's.  (I'm probably more of a loner than most of you.)

Peggy, only sporadically have I had a running partner and I think that I prefer to run alone or with someone who is a tad faster than me. I don't like to talk while running necessarily but I do like the idea of trying to "catch" the person ahead of me. Running w/someone too much slower is great for recovery, but honestly I can't do it all the time - gets on my nerves because I want to HTFU and get it done already!! LOL

On my longer runs there are spaces of time where I truly ZONE OUT listening to my music...of course I am conscious of the cars and such but find myself not really paying attention to the miles passing me by. During the last 10K I did, I remember seeing the marker for mile 3.......but those for 4 and 5 completely passed me by w/o my seeing them and before I knew it, the race was finished.

I too am a downhill weenie!! I LOVE THEM..but only if I can see the bottom!! LOL During the ride we all did on Saturday, Hilde and my husband would go FLYING down the freakin hills while I kept on the breaks a little bit..

Janet - what a great idea!  I love to listen to those kind of things when I'm driving so maybe it'll help with the running too.  I never "zon.e out" when running ... I hate every step!  Now swimming - yeah, I can zone out doing that.  Somemtimes though since I'm swimming before school I consider my lesson plans and think about what I'm doing that day so not quite zoning out.

I took Janet's advice and listened to the Age Grouper podcast while getting back on track.  It actually kind of helped and my run was over before I knew it!

Hmmmm....I might have to try some podcasts instead of music maybe I wouldn't go so "nutso" when I'm crossing that 1 hour mark into a long run. Thanks for the suggestion!

I'm like Janet- almost always running alone, and I listen to a TON of podcasts. Also audiobooks - same stuff I listen to on my 120 mile drive to work and my bike rides (leaving one ear open). X 2 on the NPR podcasts Janet mentioned. I also love Wait Wait Don't Tell Me- and laugh out loud listening to it! My favorite athletic podcasts right now are the Two Gomers and Three Non Joggers. Both are running podcasts that rarely get around to talking about running. For general interest stuff, TedTalks and Stuff You Should Know are always interesting. I would like to have a running partner, but my friends run too slow, and I haven't gotten around to checking out local running groups. I'd really like to have company for some of those 18-20 milers; I get tired of talking to myself after a while!

I just got a coupon code for a great price on Xterra wetsuits (I can share if anyone needs it). I don't own one yet - I raced all of my races last year without one but my first Tri in June is going to be in water much too cold for that.

So.....sleeveless or full sleeves....why?

I hve a full sleeved suit.... now that I know a little bit more I think I would have gone with the sleeveless.  As good a swimmer as you are, Marsha, you are not going to get the speed benefit of a slower swimmer, and I find that my upper arms get really tired with the sleeved wetsuit, which I don't think would be such a problem with the sleeveless.  Now if you think you'll be swimming in water in the 50's, then yeah, a full sleeved would probably be better.  Tammy and I are doing a sprint coming up here on May 21st, water temps are saying 65, pretty chilly.  I'm thinking about the wetsuit, and will probably practice in it tomorrow just to remember how it feels.  70 or higher I'd go without I think.  Tammy is using a sleeveless for the first time, we can probably compare notes and give you more feedback after tomorrow.

Hee! One of my sister's friends has already offered me a set of training wheels for my bike-- I appreciate the concern, honest! Laughing

How about a tricycle?  It seems appropriate for the triathlete who likes to cause problems for themselves on the bike. I even found one with pretty aero looking covers over the back wheels and that comes in short sizes...

My first race was in 56 degree water.  I've never been so happy to have sleeves in all my life.  My most recent race was in much warmer water (69-ish).  The sleeves didn't matter so much there but I still liked having it generally.

Consensus from around the forums, because I agonized over this, is if you can tolerate the sleeves and can find something relatively unrestrictive, the buoncy provided by the extra rubber on the arms is a good thing.  Then again, if it's a sprint race and you're a good swimmer, maybe the extra arm room will feel better to you.  Over that short a distance, it can't make that much of a difference.  Then again, I'm not trying to podium so a few seconds here and a few seconds there don't really mean much to me.

Oh - don't forget that sleeves make a convenient place to put your goggles and swim cap while running into transition.

I bought my Xterra SLEEVELESS...have heard several regular users of wet suits state that the ones with sleeves often limit arm movement, or at least make one feel as though they have a more limited range of motion.

On wetsuits: I have one of each, a sleeveless that I got on clearance, and a full-sleeve that Team in Training gave me. I don't remember the sleeves being very binding (I hitched them WAY up), but I still prefer the sleeveless. It's just so much quicker/easier to get into. A little chilly on the late-season race, though.

Marsha,

I vote for sleeveless.  I have enought trouble getting in and out of my wetsuit, I couldn't imagine doing it with sleeves.  Since I really have trouble with buoyancy I thought I would love swimming with a wetsuit.  (I really hate it).  I find it really anoying that my legs float up.  I think the buoyancy in my arms would be worse.   Unfortunately we've had such a cool spring this year I suspect I will be wearing it for my June tri in Michigan.

LMAO at the fact that you find it annoying that your legs float up w/the wet suit on!!!! I get annoyed when I don't use proper "form" during the swim and my legs SINK!!  gRRR

I think it's great that we have so many different ideas and opinions in this group of people!! Although we all have things in common (Tri'ing being one) we don't have the group think thing going on! It's GREAT!!

I totally understand Janet's feeling about the legs!  The first time I swam in a wetsuit, I felt like I was just gliding on top of the water like a boat and my legs were flying way out of the water on my kick!!  It was a really weird feeling.  My biggest complaint about a wetsuit is the constriction I feel in my chest.  Maybe without sleeves, I wouldn't feel that because my shoulders would, in effect, be a little freer.  Hmmmm

Sorry, Wilson, I think your video got censored... I got a message that it was blocked in my country!

Question for all the studs and studettes: anyone ever have weakness in their hands after riding? I've had the damnedest time today since my long ride; my hands are so weak, I can barely use them. Can't grip, pinch, or hold anything much, and even typing this is extremely difficult. There's also a bit of numbness and tingling in the 4th and 5th fingers. I've never had this problem before. I did feel a sharp pain in my neck/upper back a couple times when I checked over my shoulder for traffic; I wonder if it's that nerve again? The way my work schedule is, seeing a chiro or doc won't be possible for a while, unfortunately.

Tammy, I think I've fixed the video....it is open for the public now...So hopefully that fixes the issue...When I read censored - I thought it was pretty tame....

On the hand dealio - not sure about the pain continuing so long after the ride.  You've been going on enough long rides for this not to be a unique case.  My bet is that you tweaked something that has to do with the back/neck pain.  Hopefully by now it gone away after a nights sleep??  The only time I've felt something like that is after I was using a 110lb jackhammer for a day...I couldn't open my hands for two days....that was pretty bad...but that was just overuse....your dealio......hmmm....dunno?   Hopefully it becomes a non issue.

This video contains content from WMG, who has blocked it in your country on copyright grounds.
Sorry about that.

Damn, I WAS excited!

Tammy, were you riding in aero most of the time?  I could understand the numbness if you were on a road bike, but if you were riding in aero, yeah, maybe you pinched a nerve in your neck?  How tight are you gripping the aero bars?  I hope they are feeling better today....
