Well I just hit two milestones recently.  This morning's run capped off my first ever 200 mile running month.  My marathon training plan is intense and I'm glad I spent the first half of the year getting up to the prescribed mileage in order to better handle the plan once it started (currently in week 4).  Also as a result I surpassed my total mileage from 2011.  If I stay healthy I should easily double that.  We just won't compare my swim and bike totals though

Goal race is Chicago the first week of October.  The goal is Boston qualify, which would a take a 3:10.  I would love to break 3 hours though

Just logged a great brick workout. 27 miles on the bike at 17.6 mph pace followed by 6.2 mile run off of the bike at a 7:57/mi pace.  Recovery week over.

This week is bike focussed week.  I have a 40 and 57 mile ride planned.  Should be fun.

3:10 would be incredible!  I have a bunch of friends who do Boston and many of them have commented that qualifying for the race is more challenging than actually running it (even when the temps hit the 90s).  Good luck to you!

Ok so I took this weekend off from working out, hoping it would help this cold go away faster.  I'm feeling much better but still have a residual cough and congestion.  I'm going to try to resume my training plan as normal starting tomorrow.  Here's hoping!

While I was busy not training, I did get a couple of productive things done.

First, I registered for a sprint tri at the end of July.  It's the same race that I've done a HIM at for the past 2 years.  It had been sold out for months, but a friend wanted to get rid of his Sprint bib because he'd recently acquired one of the HIM and didn't want to do both races (the sprint is on Sat, HIM on Sun so it's possible to do both).  They allow bib transfers until June 30, so we were able to transfer it to me before the deadline on Saturday.  It's up in Door County, and I have a bunch for friends going up there for the weekend to race, so it should be a fun time.

Second, it's looking like my racing partner for my HIM might not be able to do the race after all.  I have another friend doing an all-womens HIM the week after the race I was supposed to do, so I think I'll do that one instead.  Since it's not an IM-branded race, it's a lot less expensive, plus it's near my friend's hometown in Michigan, so we would stay with her folks instead of a hotel.  Way more cost-effective all around!  It also gives me an extra week to train!

Hi all. Got in a pretty solid week and really solid day today of training. I've started working with Mike Ricci through his tri site rather than through BT. He's developed a customized plan and I get feedback. Def more structured than what I was doing on my own and takes out a lot of my slacker workouts. Lol. Feeling pretty fatigued today but I got a 1800m swim/30km ride and 6km run in. Will be getting up early to get a run in before call tomorrow (thankfully it is only day call but I have to work our stat ). Time for bed!

I'll get to a race report later but just wanted to share the great news! What a great feeling to have it done and now back to training for IM!!! Hi All;

I hope you all had a great weekend!  I've got a week to go to my OLY and I am pumped.... but I am also looking ahead to my Century in August.  Would you please take a look at the following plan and let me know your thoughts on the following questions: 1) My Century is 115 miles long with 4000 feet of elevation gain.  Question - would I benefit from more hill workouts or would do more increase the risk on injury? 2) Am I adding too much volume each week.  A bunch of people have told me that the 10% rule doesn't apply with biking so I loaded on the miles.  To combat injury - I'll phase out the running until the ride.  3) I'd scheduled recovery rides after each tough ride.  Are recovery rides effective in preventing injury or would I be better off just sitting on the couch...

Way to get it done Tera!  So thrilled to hear that you had a great race even though it rained on you.  6 hours is a pretty amazing time - but to beat your goal by more than 15 minutes must make you proud.

Good luck on the IM!  We're all rooting for you!  Where and when is it?

Hope you feel better soon!  I had a nasty cough a couple of weeks ago and it was surprising how bad I felt.  Hopefully the time off will do the trick!

I'm not all that knowledgeable about bike training, but I do want to chime in... I'm a little hesitant about how much volume you're increasing and how quickly.  I know you don't have to follow the 10% rule in biking, but I also know that I spent most of last year not being able to run because of increasing my mileage/intensity on the bike too quickly!  Week 2 of your plan is already more than half of your bike mileage for June!  If you stick to plan, your July mileage would be about 2.5x your June mileage!  That might be a bit much!

I'm not really sure what to suggest regarding what to do instead (volume-wise); I just know that for me personally at least, that would be too big of a jump in biking volume and I would suspect my old injuries would start sneaking back up on me.  Of course, since I'm coming off being injured, I'm being super conservative about my biking this year, so that's definitely influencing my perception of your plan!  I'd love to hear other people's thoughts as well!

I think hill workouts are a good idea!  I try to go ride hills once every few weeks.  Since I'm not used to them, I try not to do it too much and risk injury.

Regarding recovery rides, I think it really depends on how well you recover.  I tend to be able to bike commute no problem after hard workouts, so in that sense those serve as my recovery rides.  If it just causes you increased fatigue to the point that you have problems doing your main workouts, then maybe leave them out.

I did a long swim session this evening- 3000m.  I usually only do 2000-2200, so this was a pretty good increase.  Between now and my 5k in September, I'm planning on having at least one long swim a week, building up to doing 4-5k workouts in the pool.

Tomorrow I return to land training with a bar run to kick off the holiday festivities.

Well after a bout of gout, I am back running this morning. Going to try sneak in a swim at lunch...

My weekend was more drinking beer, fishing and camping. More of a fishing lake so I was hesitant to swim in open water, so I stuck to the swim area...basically ploughing through weeds. I didn't last long. I did try out my earplugs...seemed to work pretty good. Wetsuit still fit. Going to try get out a few times this weekend for some OWS. Also went for a mountain bike ride with my daughter on her tag-along bike. Makes for a good workout!Smile No stopping to smell the roses with my son, it is an all out pedal fest to get to the point on the other side of the lake!

10 days and counting until my first triathlon of the year in Invermere, BC. Looking forward to applying the training to the racing!

David, I don't think the mileage is too much depending on what your longest ride has been lately? I looked at your logs and looks like recently has been around 40M? If so, you will prob find a 30M jump pretty difficult in a single ride. I think another way to compensate would be to increase one of your mid week rides by 10M and take 10M off those long rides. It's up to you if you want to push through the discomfort. I would also say take those long rides easy and listen to your body. If you start hurting in a bad way I would end those rides early. I can't recall of you had been having any problems with regards to injury, so just take it as it comes. I would keep the recovery rides and use them to just spin out your legs. I think 1 hill repeat work out weekly is sufficient and those long rides should be on flatter courses. Good luck!

Missy - Congrats on the great swim!  I'm glad to see your training is going well for your 5K in September.  I know you've done it before - but three miles seems so long to me!  Keep up the great work!

A "Bar Run" sounds like something I would enjoy - please fill us in on the details!
