Experior - 2010-08-31 5:06  I did do a nice HIM race rehearsal later in the day.  Here's how it goes:  run 7 miles moderate (z2 working up to z3).  Then bike 40 miles at HIM effort.  Then run 5 miles at z4 (hard!).  It hurts, hurts hurts!  (But in a good way...)

Michael, I'm going to have to lurk on your mentor board next year just so I can see quotes like this.  You are the animal!  (and good call on not racing).  Hope the kids are feeling better.

This is a very belated thank you to Michale and every one in the group for all the support! I've learned a great deal- mostly that you guys are all pretty smokin fast!!

I have one last race, this coming weekend. My training has been sporadic due to work and family.

I resigned from my job last Monday- so all evening computer time has been spent searching for a new position. I now have 3 solid offers and 2 others in the works. I'll have to decide soon.

Every one take care!

Heidi

Hey Heidi!  Sounds like overall good news on the job front.

Let us know how the race went!

I did a beautiful 16 mile run on great trails through the mountains this weekend.  I didn't want it to end!  It's probably a good thing that I don't live there -- my family would starve because I'd do nothing except ride and run all day.  (Not really, of course, but the temptation sure would be strong.)

Hey All,

Not sure if anyone is stopping by here anymore, but I wondered what everyone's off season plans are.  I've got 2.5 weeks left until my last tri of the season and will then do a half Marathon in November (and maintain reasonable bike and swim during that time).  After Nov I'll start to look at goals for next season which will dictate my training plans, but right now I'm thinking that I need to take another shot at that HIM.  It beat me in May, and I want a rematch :-)

Hope everyone is well.

Go get HIM, Stu!  You'll beat HIM next yext.

I'm done for the season.  I took a couple weeks off and now back at it in transition/maintenance mode.  I've been working on my annual plan with Sept 2011 Muskoka HIM in mind.  Plan is to do my first Oly in June which is same course as HIM, actualy this Oly is longer then normal (2K-55K-15K), but will be good prep for my first HIM.  Don't know if you've heard of the Muskoka 70.3, anyway Craig Alexander has been racing it as a prep for Kona and has now won it last three years.  It's a very hilly bike and run.  Looking forward to training for it.

Stu, you crossed the finish line.  You weren't beat, just challenged...

I'm looking forward to seeing how your tri and HM go.

To answer your question:

My off-season doesn't start for a while, as I'm doing a HIM in just about 2 weeks, and IM in early November.  At that point, I'll need some time off, so I'll probably take a month and just do whatever feels right, with no plan or goals.

I have this crazy idea that I might be able to KQ, so I might pursue that goal next year, finances permitting and family willing.  I wanted to sign up for IMWI badly, because I grew up in Madison, but the money just isn't there right now.  So I'm banking (so to speak) on IMKY staying open until I have the cash.  If not, my goal next year will probably be to get faster at sprints and Olys, and go for the KQ the year after.  I think it would be a lot of fun to spend a few months seeing how fast I can run a 5K, so that just might become my off-season 'project', especially if I'm not prepping for IM training.

Hey everyone-glad to see some activity here.  I have AG Nationals 9/25 with the lofty goal of avoiding a last place finish in the 45-49 AG.  Training has been going well with the exception of a nagging right calf tightness.  I have been using a compression sleeve on the calf during runs and it "seems" to help.

Assuming I survive Nationals with no injuries and some small amount of self confidence I may do a HIM near Houston in early November.  Hate to "waste" the good training base I have without giving a HIM a shot.  After that, I may do some road races locally if I can avoid the nagging injuries that tend to pop up with increased run volume.  Shooting for an early season HIM in 2011 with maybe, big maybe, an Ironman distance race in Fall 2011--maybe B2B in 11/11.

Happy trails and good training.

Randy

Wow... those are three inspiring posts!  It's great to see the plans for next year.

Sylvain... you've had your mind set on that HIM for awhile and it sounds like the OLY will be more than a nice half-step to it.  No doubt you'll make it.  I might come to you for some marathon tips... I've wanted to give one of those a try since I started running.  There was an interesting thread on the main board this week about the jump from a half-mary to the full with a fair number of people weighing in that the marathon was more difficult than a HIM.  And that the full Marathon was about equivalent to 3x a 1/2 marathon in difficulty.  If that's the case, I have my work cut out for me... but I might give the Richmond Marathon a try next Nov... it's supposed to be a good starter Mary (and for me, an ending Mary!)

Kona Michael... that would be TOO COOL!  I hadn't realized you had signed up for the B2B IM, for some reason I was thinking it was the HIM.  Is Mike (Stonecutter) still doing it?  You do have alot of race left in the season... the Fall is the best reason for living in the South.  Warm days, cool nights and lots of sunny days... great training weather!

Randy, my whisper goal for next year is to qualify for nationals in the 50s.  So, I'm really looking forward to hearing about your experience and reading your race report.  Kind of cool that they are right in your back yard!

Hey guys- My last race of the year was a complete Bomb! I should have taken a DNF, but I knew that if I did, I'd be beating myself up for it.

Long story short- woke up with pain in my quad that I couldn't shake. Water temp was about 55, and I didnt have a wet suit. My leg cramped in the swim, and that slowed me way down. Then, my leg was in agony at the beginning of the bike-it went completely numb from quad down to toes, and stayed that way for the entire ride. So, I was really using only one leg to bike with.
The run, was terrible for the first 2 miles. I had to watch my foot hit the ground on every step, because I couldnt feel it. I "ran" with a 68 year old man for the first half of the run.
Overall, my times were the worst I've ever had. My foot is still having bouts of shooting pain and numbness. It's the same foot I broke back in March, and I'm wondering if it's connected in some way.

I tried some barefoot running in the park the other day, and that seemed to help alleviate some of the discomfort.

Goals for the winter season- I'll probably do Jorge's winter cycling program if he does it again. And, I think I'll focus on building a better running base. But, it also looks like I might be back in the pool for some water running, if things don't get better.

Wow, Heidi, that's quite a race.  Look at it this way -- it's one you won't forget!  Finishing it is a testament to your perseverance.

Randy, let us know how that race goes!  (I'm wishing I could have joined you, but with HIM just two weeks away, bad idea.)

Heidi-that is a cold swim!!  Must have been hard to put your face in the water much less the rest of your body given the lack of a wetsuit.  Way to hang in there till the end.

Oh! Heidi, you're one tough girl.  I can't see myself putting my feet in 55 degree water let alone my whole body.  Way to hang in there and finish the race.

Wow Heidi... I can't get past the 55 degrees even though I'm sure the rest of it was the worst part for you.  I'm seriously impressed that you persevered.

On a brighter note.  Had a PB in my 10K today.  One of the great things about starting running in your late 40s is there's still lots of room for improvement :-

congrats on the PB!
The water was pretty cold- but I tried to think of it as a wrap around ice pack!

Just checking in and saying hello. Great to see everyone is still racing. I missed about a week of training because I developed a case of prostatitis. OUCH! It really has bothered me for a couple weeks. I was getting ready for a HM on Oct 3rd. and went for a 9 mile run this morning and it was a challenge.  I think I am going to shut it down for the year. I do not think I will be ready for the HM and there is no sense in pushing it and getting injured.

It has been a pretty good year.  I have lost about 70lbs since September of last year, completed a HM, completed four sprints and built a good base for next year. I am already setting some goals for next year. Get rid of this additional 30lbs., complete a marathon in the spring and a HIM next summer. I'll be keeping  in touch. Once again, thanks for everyone's help!

Do I dare ask what Prostatitis is? Or, is it a guy thing?

Sorry to hear your shutting it down early, but it sounds like a smart decision.

Hey everyone-home from AG Nationals in Tuscaloosa. Will try to get my race report up tomorrow but just wanted to let everyone know that a mere mortal was able to race among the "tri gods". I had a solid race-nothing spectacular. 2:38-fair swim (31:49), good bike (1:09:04)  and a decent (52:53) but super hot run.  My goal-not to be last in the men's 46-49 AG. Goal met with a 50th out of 69 finish-just missed the podium .  Amazing to see so many exceptional athletes.  Really impressed with some of the "older" age groupers. First place in the 70-74 was faster than I was! Not much of an accomplishment  for someone my age but he was 70+ with a 49 min 10k!!!  Swag was good with, bag, tshirt, hat, yankz, headlamp, flyers, gatorade and some sort of picnic blanket thing as the finishers gift.

Not sure about the HIM in Nov. I was whipped at the end of the race-will see how the body does over the next few days.  Some grease fittings for my knees would be nice.

Yep, I'm doing it.  I feel like ripping my hair out -- I'm tapering.  Two weeks ago I trained 23 hours.  Last week, a little over 9.  This week it'll be 5-7 or so.  That's a drastic change (more drastic than planned, but things happened...), and it's driving me nuts.

My swim training has been, um, not great.  I'm ready for the bike and run though.  So my plan is to survive the swim then go to work.  I'm taking another crack at going sub 5.

Michael-you will do great. Confident of a sub 5hr race given your training! Tapering is a funny thing-Last week I felt achy and like I was coming down with something all week before my race.  You have done the work-time to have fun.  Good luck!
