BC4UA - 2011-01-27 11:00 AM Newbie here. Jumped in and signed up for Ironman Augusta this year. Figured I'd quit lurking in this thread and post too Nice to see other people struggling with the same things I do. Great to have some support, even if I'm just reading about it.

Swimming is the only part that bothers me, but I've made good progress in the first month of training, so I'm not terrible worried about it. I've completed a marathon and century ride in the past, so I think with proper training I can finish, and hopefully do well to boot. But I'll settle for just finishing.

Jeez, with all that experience, you will finish for sure as long as you follow the plan! Welcome to the group!

Hi Everyone,

I'm back from vacation. I had a great time. I was able to get in 3 runs and 2 swims. I hadn't done open water since last summer, it was a little sketchy at the start But I got used to it and was able to get in some good 2000m constant swims in the ocean.

The wife and I did this one hike called "stairway to heaven" it is actually illegal to go on, but the guards and state are relaxed about it. As long as you start the hike prior to the guard starting his shift they won't arrest you. But man what a crazy hike, it was like pedestrian mountain climbing. There were 4000 steps total, most of the way up felt like going up a ladder. The way down was even crazier. And there is no room to pass, so if you need to get around someone you have to straddle the side of the cliff. My garmin said I burned 4400 calories afterwards heh.

here is a picture:

Note: That's not my wife, I found the picture from google images

Anyway, I'm back to the normal training now. It's nice to be back.

Looks awesome.  I have a question for everyone: what kind of store sells cheap water bottles for bikes.  I just got a hydrotail with 3 bottles and need inexpensive water bottles.  I went to a hardware store and a bike repair shop today in addition to my school book store hoping there were some cheap Tulane water bottles.  No dice.  I don't want to pay a lot at a retail bike store.  I don't live close to a sporting goods store.  Think a walgreens might? Any other ideas?

target or walmart? I'm sure they have some cheapos. If you can wait a few days you can pick up some really cheap ones online. I grabbed some from REI website for like $2 a few months ago.

Tonight's run

Start 5:25pm, Temp 46, Hum 39%, Wind Calm

Planned: 5miles w/4x10sec hill sprints

Actual: 5.58miles w/6x10sec hill sprints couldn't remember how many so add a
couple more

Legs felt good so I let them have the reins tonight.

Now This is my favorite since things are starting to click

Start 2:20pm

Planned 1,300yds w/ 6x75yd sprints 20 ri

Actual 1,860yds w/6x80yd sprints 20 ri

I believe I am finally getting a connection with swimming. I am finally bilateral breathing every 3 strokes without having to think about it, in doing so I can feel my left arm is more sore since it is having to catch up to my right on strength.
Now last Tuesdays swim and especially today I could actually feel my whole arms pushing the water not just the hands. Can really feel the good soreness i love that type of pain.

It sure nice to finally see some progress.

Still need to work on my right arm in getting it up higher so it doesn't drag through the water.

Mellissa - 2011-01-26 7:49 AM checking in again...half marathon Sunday was slow (1:57) but fun, chatted with a friend the whole course Getting ready to move-again-but I'm still getting in as many of my workouts as I can. Still no bike, luckily there are spin classes/bikes everywhere, still hoping to figure something out! Swim is feeling pretty solid now, even though I missed some time because of a burn (gonna leave an ugly scar on my thigh too). Got a chance to experiment with nutrition stuff on a borrowed bike ride Monday before I flew home, that's gonna be tricky!

Happy Wednesday!

I wish I could call that time slow!  That is down right flying for me!  good job

Never too late to jump it. We've got people finishing the plan, starting the plan, and everywhere in between. Ask away!

Unrelated......could someone tell me how to post a classified ad? I don't see an icon for "New Thread." Do I need some advanced level of membership before I can post stuff for sale in the Classifieds section?

You have to be a member of BT for 30 days before you can post an ad in the classifieds. Just wait a few more weeks!

So first appointment with the Phys therapist today.  Went okay.  I'm well on the way to fixing my IT band issues.  The cause apparently is over training (not shocked) and lack of strength/flexibility in my hips.  So no running for at least the next week perhaps weeks and then we'll reassess.  Keep reminding myself that the half mary on Feb. 27th isn't my goal race this year and that being good to go for tri season is priority number one.

What's the ligament behind the circled IT band called? Is that my hamstriing tendon. If it's sore, what should I do.....stretch, ice, etc? It's by no means painful, just noticably more noticable than other parts of my body that ache.

Welcome! What questions can I help you with?

I'm just wondering if I can move things around a little on the schedule but I'm afraid the workouts might have a specific purpose scheduled the way they are. I really only have 2 days a week to swim during the winter months so can I combine the distances and just do longer swims on those days? I swim all year around 5-6000 yards a week so endurance wise this is not an issue for me.

There is one day a week that has a bike and run scheduled on the same day. I have some trouble with achy knees so I was wondering if it might be better to switch that run to different day? I'm just not sure if it is scheduled that way to prepare your legs for running off the bike?

Thanks for your help!

I'm in the same boat as you regarding the plan. From what I've read on the thread, and elsewhere moving things around is OK, but make sure keep the workouts for the week within the same week. Also be aware of when the long runs/bikes are scheduled. I'm sure others here have better informed opionions than mine

I think we're all guilty of moving things around :-) If you can't be felxible, you won't be successful. I see these plans as guides and modify them depending on what my body tells me. Mostly I've been going harder, longer and faster than I had anticipated, but yesterday I couldn't get my run in so today I doubled up the run with the bike....and feel great! The title of this thread seems to leave lots of room for learning along the way.

Best of luck!

Awesome! I rode 50 and change today, not hilly, but an awesome ride and my longest ever by far.  No run.  Tomm I am riding 90min and a 30min run.  Tonight, however, I've earned sushi and sake!
