Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for all of your great posts. I know I have a big case of the blahs and I just need to work through it. Tammy, thanks for the permission to just "be" for a couple of days. Sometimes I'm really envious of my husband who can come home from work, have a few beers and just putter around without any GUILT. I know I feel better when I'm active and there is nothing better than the feeling after a good workout or a good event, but just getting to the starting line seems to be hard for me. To be honest, backing out of my 1/2 mary, 25k and full marathon this spring has done a number on my confidence too. I guess I just need to keep my eye on the prize and press on. Thanks for listening, friends. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Janet - I totally hear what you're saying ... sometimes I'm gungho and other times I can barely get out the door! I wasn't quite this bad last year, but I definitely have noticed a waxing and waning for my ambition to train this year. If I didn't spend a fortune on a new bike, I might not do ANY tris this year! But I have to justify that expense so I press on. Plus I talked my son into it so I gotta keep up. I have to have a race planned or I'm liable to blow off training. And the two months when I decreased my training I gained 10 lbs, so I guess if I want to keep the weight off I have to force myself. Sometimes I just have to say to myself, "just get out there, even if you walk (go slow on the bike, swim slowly) and then most of the time when I just get started I feel better and finish strong |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Janet, I agree with all the advice you've gotten, so I'll try to avoid repeating. Here are a few ideas: - Show up for a race without expectations. I did this a couple of weeks ago. I was injured, burned out, and not in peak condition, so I was considering blowing off the race, but I knew it would give me a boost. I went half expecting to DNF (and being OK with that), but it went well, and I had fun. Plus, it got my head back in the game and I got a nice feeling of accomplishment. - Find a new challenge. Since you didn't do your long races this spring, it sounds like you need something else to get excited about. Maybe something completely different like rowing/crew, hiking the Grand Canyon or a team fundraising event (charity walk, bike ride, etc.). Or an off-the-wall event like a Warrior Dash or Ride & Tie. - Volunteer at an event. Everyone else's enthusiasm is likely to be contagious. - Throw away your race plan. I occasionally load one into my BT log, but I almost always ignore it and try to do only what I'm in the mood to do. I know if I force myself to do a speed workout when what I'm in the mood for is long & slow, I'm guaranteed to burn out. The whole reason I got into this was to keep me motivated to exercise for the rest of my life, so anything demotivating has to go! Most of all, give yourself permission to relax! This is a hobby, so the net effect should be to recharge your battery, not pull you down. You'll get your mojo back, don't sweat it! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm all packed up and ready to go kick some at the Rockin' R Toobing Triathlon tomorrow!! Body is feeling great, mind is in a good place, excitement is there, yep, time to race!! Just waiting for daughter to get off work and then we are off! |
![]() ![]() |
Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I hear ya, too, Janet-- this year's been really rough to stay motivated with various injuries and so forth. I think our Ninja Turtle's got a LOT of great points here; as others have said, too, sometimes you do need the break so you can come back better than ever. Whatever happens, I know you'll be ready and have a great time at your next event! You GO, girl! Tammy, how are the hands? I had similar problems last year while biking in CA-- turns out I was leaning too much on the handlebars of my roadie, thus causing the numbness. I ended up doing some core work this winter while working out on the trainer, and that helped a lot (or at least I *think* it did-- ask me again when I actually have a roadie to ride again... GO, HILDE, GO!! Have a great time, and tell us all about it when you get back! Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! (Exits to get some more sunshine while the sun's actually shining...) |
![]() ![]() |
Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hope the MMM racers this weekend had a great time - and we look forward to reading the race reports. Hilde's pictures and video are in her album....be prepared to get pumped up!!! I'm so wanna race now after seeing those pictures. I will do something tomorrow to see how things are gunna work out with the lungs. I've meant to swim the last couple of days, but thought better of it - don't want to push too soon. I can inhale and exhale pretty fully now without coughing - so it's getting better. I think tomorrow will be good to try. My wife will be going on trip #2 tomorrow. She will be gone all week again - this time in Brazil....Two weeks in a row with the kids....that kills training and adds lots of stress!! I'm hoping to use my MIL again to help me out...she's a superstar... So today I went to our swim shop in town. I bought paddles and a pull buoy to get me moving along in the swim training and drills. I also - SHAWN LISTEN - bought some jammers..haha since he made me feel like a dork - I had to get'em.....$45 bucks later - they better make me look sexy! haha...I'm gunna scare the viewing public....O'well, I really don't give a hoot! I'm excited to kick some major the last few weeks before Indy Tri....I'm looking forward to everyone showing up and having a blast. I need to get planning all the menu stuff and getting suggestions from everyone for breakfast foods, special stuff...etc... We wanna have our athletes prepared to the fullest!! The party after the Tri is starting to grow a bit locally....some Tri friends are gunna show and others have heard about it and may show...so dunno what's gunna happen....Maybe even some new recruits! A few friends have even decided to run that race - just to be part of the fun!! haha I better swim faster in those jammers....lot's faster..haha |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey, glad my photos pumped you up!! Nothing like a race to get you motivated to get back to work to train those weaknesses... I lost 1st place ONLY by the run... I don't know why it's so hard to run faster and not feel like I'm going to die!

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So, I've been thinking about our challenge.... and I was thinking it was a GREAT idea when we started, BUT now it seems that just about everyone is dealing with some kind of issue, either an injury, or weather related, or something.... I think we should bag it. Maybe keep our times from Time Trial #1 and redo them about the same time NEXT year. Or maybe set a date at the end of this season? What does everyone think? Indy is 25 days away as of today!!! This is the list of who is going, please chime in if I've made a mistake!! Wilson, our gracious host! Hilde, you illustrious leader Tammy (tstl), THE Donut Queen Janet, marathoning trombonist extraordinaire Alex, Star of "Cyclist Meets Biker" |
![]() ![]() |
Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I agree with bagging the challenge (but I was never really in it to start!) Yes, I'm still planning on Indy, but I am struck that even our Indy list includes some folks that aren't at the top of their game! (I include myself in the list of the wounded in action crowd.) If there is some movement to cancel this get together I would understand. It would be more fun if everyone was healthy and going strong, that is for sure! Edited by jcarmody 2011-05-24 11:04 AM |
![]() ![]() |
Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am not cancelling!!! Unless Wilson wants to, and I don't think he does.... I'm really looking forward to the getaway with my daughter and racing in another state... a destination race! Besides, I'm registered, I have a non-refundable hotel for the drive up and we're going to Graceland, how can you even THINK about cancelling!!!! Over 3 weeks to go, just get better people!!! I'll take beating any of you even if I have to beat you while you are gimpy, ha ha!! Not really, would love that everyone is healthy too.... |
![]() ![]() |
Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sorry Hilde, I didn't mean to upset you. I really thought that was where you were going with your post regarding the number of injuries and cancelling the challenge. Guess I misread between the lines! |

![]() ![]() |
Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yup, I'm in for Indy as far as I know... will wait to hear from the ortho next week as to whether I should even think about trying to do the race itself or not-- I'm not too proud to show up with my trusty mountain bike if I'm allowed to! *grins* I'm also up for deferring the TT gig to next year, if everyone's amenable-- I've not done any of the measurements, but would be happy to once I get the all-clear to get back to serious training, and then see how/if I improve after that... Speaking of being given the all-clear, I'd love some feedback from you all about this: I'm seriously reconsidering my race plans for the season. On the one hand, it would bum me out to cancel yet ANOTHER major goal race... but on the other, I'm clearly still healing (witness the fact that I'm sleeping like a log and not able to get up earlier in the mornings to swim laps!) and don't have a roadie to practice on right now anyway even if I were entirely healthy. HIMs take a LOT of training and miles, and at this stage I really don't think I'd be able to get healthy and put in all the time I'd need to be up for it properly. I've an appointment with the ortho AND her second-in-command next week, so we'll see what they have to say in terms of what treatment should be and when I might be able to start running on land again. But I've checked Steelhead's rules: if I email them before the end of May, I can get a $75 refund. No deferrals to next year, no refunds after that. Sigh. So what think the MMMers? Am I wimping out if I put off Steelhead, or being sensible? Should I HTFU and go for it? Or email Steelhead and put the $75 towards the replacement cost for my bike (whatever insurance doesn't cover)? I know you'll all put it to me straight, so bring it on! *grins* |
![]() ![]() |
Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Alex, in all honesty I think you should cancel your HIM.... you've had issues for what seems forever with your foot and now the accident. You have an awesome work ethic, but with the race in August, and not having your usual base, I think you'd be pushing it and you would end up feeling under-prepared for it. Get the $75 back while you can, maybe look for another in October, late September?? Or call this the year from hell and just race whatever you end feeling like CAN race. Dang, you still have to get a new bike! Enjoy your summer, fully heal, train like mad, but don't feel guilty if you want to sleep in after all your acting workshops (BTW, that sounds INCREDIBLY FUN!! I would LOVE doing that! I was a high school thesbian and have always wanted to get back to it... esp. musical theater!). I hope you CAN race Indy, I really want us all to be out there on the course!! But I know you'll be a wonderful cheerleader if the doc says no. Don't worry Janet, we're still friends!! Ha ha! I really wasn't hinting at all about cancelling Indy, sorry if it sounded that way. The MMMers have had a rough Spring, that's for sure. Hopefully everyone will be able to race even if they are not at their best... of course I will be at my best, ready to run 6:00 miles off my fantastic speedy bike leg, after hydroplaning over Wilson's back in the swim! Heck, I'm the mentor, sure don't want to show up and have you all think I've been POSING all this time!! Yep, the secret is out, I don't really train at all, I just put those numbers in my log to look good! I REALLY sit on the couch for HOURS, staying up late smoking cigarettes, sometimes a big cigar, drinking a 20 oz. malt liquor... usually I'm half naked with my big ol' hanging down to my thighs, and I set a big plate of brownies on top of them... usually when I'm watching the Biggest Loser and thinking what losers all those people are! Who'd want to do all that working out when you can just hang out on the couch and EAT?! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey all! Just checking in. I'm going to be a bit MIA here for a while. I've just got too much personal "" going on right now to be focused on this. In a nutshell, and without dragging you down with details...I am looking for a house, filing for a divorce, and ready for a fresh start. Not sure how Tri's will fit into that but if I can pull one (or more) off, I will. I'll be here to check in when I can but I'm just overwhelmed with everything going on in my life right now. Sorry. Best of luck to everyone in all their races (just in case I miss them while I'm not on) |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Alex - I'm in with Hilde. I think you should bag the HIM for now and see how you are doing once you have re-established your base level of training. Trust me, I know that cancelling your plans for ANY event totally sucks - but being the overachiever that you are, imagine how you'd feel if you went to the HIM and were not adequately prepared... Marsha - Do what you need to do to take care of yourself! We'll be here when you get your sh*t together and life settles down for you again. That's what friends are for - even virtual ones! I think it would be a SHAME to cancel Indy! I cannot go, UNFORTUNATELY and against my wishes, but will be there in spirit to cheer all of you on and crack the whip.. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Alex, I agree with Hilde as well. You've had so many setbacks this year; maybe you should focus on healing and towards the end of the season, do whatever you can- sprint or maybe Olympic. Then come back stronger than ever next year and hit that HIM hard! My offer still stands to come up and do Steelhead with you whenever you are ready! I just had a fairly good-ish run today! The leg seems to be getting better, even though I'm running regularly. Maybe those stupid exercises and stretches the PT gave me are actually good for something, after all! I'm back in beautiful Sydney-by-the-sea, B.C. The sun was shining again, which must be remarkable, because the locals keep remarking on it. A cool breeze off the water made for perfect running weather. And I'm still planning to come to Indy! I just got my schedule for next month and I have the days off, so barring any more disasters and aviation gods willing (traveling standby), I'll be there! Marsha, my thoughts are with you. Here's wishing you some peace in the midst of turmoil. Turtle |

Now we can skip that silly-ole race in Indy and pass the time with a Real Housewives marathon on Wilson's couch instead! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() No canceling INDY!!!! I've been so looking forward to this - meeting everyone and having some serious fun...Who cares what our times are - let's just have some laughs together...I will crawl the FU#$#@%%@#$ing race coughing blood....the only way I'm not running the race is if I'm in the hospital or knocked out!!! My plan is to puke or pass out as i cross the finish line...whichever is fine by me. I don't care either way about the challenge...I won't be able to do it justice at this time...but - whatever.... |

Totally LMAO at the second part of that post!!!! Hydroplaning over wilson....yeah right...I'd stop you somehow - I do weigh more than you....I'll grab on and drown your a$$!!! Hilde, you may beat me out of the water, but you better ride your a$$ off on that Felt - cuz my Giant OCR1 has a lock on the B16!!!! And the run - I'm gunna swat ur a$$ as I fly by!!! haha.... Bring it girl!!!! This is gunna be so much fun - I can't wait! Hey, just for your enjoyment factor the first 1/4 mile for the run is uphill.......It sucks real bad!!!! If I get a chance I may video tape the course driving the car and post if for those that want to see what's coming! Alex, I agree with Hilde on the HIM......I don't think you are the type of person that can be happy with just finishing and not pushing the $hit our of yourself. I think it would be best to wait on that monumental goal to where you can really be into the moment and not just wishing you could have trained more fully. You want your war story of the first HIM to be really cool.....Although getting hit by a motorcycle is a pretty good start of the story.....Bag it for now - enjoy the season at a reasonable level that you can still have fun and not make it a chore... Just my $0.02. |
