Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JJ- - 2012-07-03 10:12 AM Big PR for me today I ran my first ever 5k distance at a local charity event on April 14th of this year. (this is when i got the bug)Time 34:02 with avg HR 188 Since then I have been just focusing on building my endurance with base runs. Today I ran a 5k speed testTime 29:18 with avg HR 176Over 4.5 minutes faster with a 12 bpm drop in avg HR Not fast by most of your guys times but a BIG improvement for a newbie runner like me JJ don't sell yourself short my man! Dropping that much time in less than 3 months is INSANE!!! Congratulations! Must feel great to see all the hard work paying off with such HUGE dividends! Got in a hilly 20 mile ride this morning and ended up with an average pace just shy of 18 mph, which after starting off kind of sluggish I'll gladly take. By the end of the ride I was actually feeling much better, and my times were showing it, but work called. Maybe I can get out and do some more this afternoon prior to my swim. We shall see! -Matt |

Question - how do people push through a plateau? Be it one of the sports or even weight?
The key to all of this is consistency. Changing the stimulus of either length or intensity will usually do it for me with regards to tri. With weight, if I am trying to lose a few lbs, I will stop looking at the scale everyday. I may cut out a particular food that is high in calories or limit the amount of "cheap" carbs I take in. Over the winter I will calorie count and make sure I'm getting a 500 calorie deficit each day. Then, after some time I will check out the scale. Consistency is the key. With sports and weight loss IMO. Keep at it, the body will adjust and then adaptations occur. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good morning all ... My trail legs are slowly returning, and I had a much better race last night. Finished 23/196, but was still 4th among my training group that was there. On Tuesdays, we usually run the course nice and easy, then the race, and then cool down on one of the other two courses that wasn't used ... for a total of 9ish miles. I must not have eaten enough throughout the day yesterday, as I got a bit light headed on the cool down run and had to walk it in early. Just a reminder to keep fueling yourself even if you have weight loss goals. Today is "get it all done" day before heading out to WI tomorrow for a week. I may not be very active during vacation, but plan on training hard! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Happy Birthday, America!! Hope you all are well. I hung it up for a few days and took it easy. I hit it hard in June and had a race so a few days off was nice. I am ready to get back at it. Gonna try and get a run in today. Hope everyone has a nice 4th. While grillin' and enjoying adult beverages, look around and thank God we live in a country where we can make choices!

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I hope everyone had a nice 4th! Back to the grind! JJ, nice distance. I need to start getting iin some longer rides. I have had a few 40 milers this year but need to up it. I am officially on 'take to the next level' on my runs. I have been hanging out in the 3-5 mile run posse and now need new company. I went on a 6 miler Saturday and yesterday at a slow place. They were both 60 minute runs. It was blazing hot (approaching 100) both days so I don't know if I could have gone faster even if I wanted to! I took a 24 oz water bottle and drank it along the way. I hate carrying things but oh well. I might get a bottle belt one day but not ready yet. I need to go for long runs in the morning but just haven't done it yet. Anybody here ever go for a run and realize during the run you forgot to put in your inserts? I take them out when they are soaked and let them dry. My 2 yr old moved them off my shoes so I did not see them when I grabbed my shoes. About 2 miles in, I start thinking my shoes feel a little loose. Crap! No inserts! I finished the run but it wasn't as comfy as normal. Gonna hit the pool today for 2250 yd interval swim. Bought new jammers and didn't realize how worn out my old ones are. I've had it six months but I guess the twice a week in chlorine kills it. I even wash it out after but it is trashed. What is on tap today everyone? I was thinking about you guys yesterday- thinking it would be fun to get the group together and grill/drink for a few hours. Have a great day!

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hope all my American freinds had a good 4th July and didn't celebrate too much!! Did a 5 mile track today, not a new circuit, one of me regular routes, but managed to get a PR on the distance, as for the first time my average pace per mile was under 9 minutes, it was 8.57, yes I know only 3 seconds under (to the wife), but you guys will understand!! Got my second sprint tri next week, it is pool based with everybody going in 15 minutes intervals which might mean sitting around for a long period, but hey, got to keep the challenges going!! Have fun with this weekends training Gareth |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good morning gang. Summer is proving to be a very busy time for me. For those who sent me their mailing addresses, I have not forgotten to send the aquaphor. I have been flat out for a few weeks with family, work, and training. I will be getting those to you. I had a great session on the trainer last night. 2x15 minutes at 100% CP. Left a nice puddle of sweat on the mat with that one. I have registered for the next race in a few weeks. It is going to be on the same course that Troy and I just raced, so I will get my revenge with the course. I am looking to have a strong run with this race. I would like to finish strong. How is everyone else doing? |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wasup Tri junkies! Well I am about to board a plane and head to the beach in Florida for a week and half. I am sure going to miss my bike but I am planning to do a lot of swimming. Since my swimming has been really lacking in my training this will be a great opportunity to really get it in gear. Of course I will be enjoying some nice runs as well. Can't wait. Since I've only done 1 open water swim and it was in a small pond what advice suggestions do y'all have for the ocean that awaits me in the upcoming week? I've read alot about high elbow and etc.... |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() There's our fearless leader! I know you are chompin' at the bit to get back out there and do better. An old wise man once said to me "something something something that no longer nourishes us just to finish something...get faster/better." It was really good. I might not be able to quote it but I remember the point of it and think about it when I train. I hit the pool yesterday for an endurance swim. Swam 1250 yards in 24:48 (a 1:55 100). I have no problems with that time at nearly 3/4 of a mile. Gonna hit the road today for a 22 mile ride. Want to finish in under 80 minutes but it will be a challenge in the heat. I am signed up for my next race on 7/28. lt is a local sprint with shorter distances (.54 mile lake swim, 9.1 mile bike, and 2.6 mile run) but I have been told it is brutal. I have been told to be prepared to almost come to a standstill going up some of the hills. It will be my first open water swim and my longest swim leg in a race. The butterflies will be goin!

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JJ, what part of FL are you going to? Advice wise, I would not wear a black wetsuit that made me look like a seal, no flashy jewelry, and no open wounds that might bleed! In all seriousness, I would take a snorkel to try a few times. Some people have suggested ear plugs. The surf, waves, movement, and saltwater are constant changing factors. Trying to swim/breathe the first time might be a little overwhelming. A snorkel can help you relax while you swim and then try the breathing. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello all ... I've arrived to my parents house in northern WI where we'll be for the next 5 days (then two days of driving home). They live on a small lake and on pancake flat roads, so I'm looking forward to seeing what I can do with my mph stats on a 30 miler tomorrow. And the lake will give me some nice swimming right out their door. Training paradise. I'll probably be sporadic with the posts for the next few days, but I'll pop in with an update about how my hill riding serves me out here in the flat roads of the midwest. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just had my first experience on a road bike, felt strange riding after years of riding a mountain bike, took a while to get used to the gears (involved using the brake which threw me), chain came off changing gear, but really felt the difference when I was riding at speed!! Going to put bike in car Sunday morning and drive to the bike route for my next triathlon, having already done the route on my mountain bike, I will be able to see the difference and make a decision what bike to ride!! Have a good weekend Gareth |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Back in the swing (full bore) ... my brother and I plan to do our own Olympic in the morning ... but we will tack on some extra's ... Hit the ocean at 5:40am (sunrise) and swim 1 1/2 miles ... Followed by: 30 miles bike ... and then he plans to run 8 ... in all honesty with this heat and humidity I may skip the run and just work on running mounts and dismounts - I have 60 rubber bands so I can do 30 practice sets ... figure if I don't wear a wetsuit, skip socks, and figure out how to do this I can hjave some good transitions to make up for what will be some miserable runs ... Train hard - race hard! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 420 yard swim in the gulf this morning. Couple of things 1) I have a long way to go to improve my swimming before my Tri in September2) I swallow too much salt water3) I pick my head up way too much to breath and lower half sinks4) Took me 13 minutes to do a measly 420 yards (not good), and I finished exhaustedOn the bright side, gorgeous morning for a swim!!! ![]() |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So I swam just shy of a mile today on the small lake that my parents live on. It's warm here ... so I went without the wet suit and swam just in my tri suit. I meant to take it nice and easy, but was surprised to learn that I was swimming at a 2:15 pace. I mapped what I thought my route was, and did so conservatively ... so maybe I swam a bit longer, but I was surprised I was going that slow. Similar problems with my legs sinking, JJ. I would site myself and lose all momentum that the wet suit and the buoyancy allows me to maintain. I've got a 50 mile ride planned tomorrow, but I think I'll swim again on Tuesday and just site by keeping the shore to my right, not looking ahead. And I'll push the pace a bit more to see what sort of improvement I can get. I never swam continuous distance in the pool ... just various combinations of intervals. So finding and keeping a pace in the open water is still a bit new to me. And the wet suit REALLY helps. |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() JJ Great picture and location!! Keep practicing - and you will get better. My first race was a quarter mile and time was 13 minutes. I have come a long way since then!! I was in a lake this week that looked similar at 6:30 am - enjoy!

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() Home Town race report from yesterday. Two of my training rides cover this course and I have run this loop before and it does make a difference knowing the course. Stats: Swim .25 mile - 5:19 ( was second out of the water in my flight and 8th overall - I recall my first race at 13 mins for the same distrance) Bike 10 M - 27:40 - 5 miles out and back with a 21 MPH pace out and was able to up the average and finish at 21.8 MPH, a PR with a negative split - Troy was on my shoulder in the bike talking of finish strong and have a negative split..... Run 3.5 miles - 28:30 - steady pace of 8:22 (I had flicked Troy off as I was hurting and wanted to stop but I pushed on and opted for steady eddy). The course was advertised as 3 miles but at race announcements they said it was longer.....oh well 1:04:33 and 24th overall and was the first place resident. My target was 1:05 so I am definately getting to know my body and my conditioning better. Fun fun - now I need several weeks of just training to work on run and bricks to improve the run. Have a great Day!!

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JJ, that is a beautiful picture. Is that your rod? Catch anything? I am saltwater addict. I fish, dive, ski, swim, etc. in the ocean. I have about 14.5 months left up here in landlocked KY and hopefully will be back on the coast. Jeff, you did a 1/4 mile swim in 5:19??? Did you get a speeding ticket? That is fast! I want no part of you on raceday. I'm glad you're not in my AG. Troy and Scott either. I took a few days off last week after a solid June. I'm getting back at today with a chip on my shoulder! I am frustrated with my biking. I am so slow and it makes me mad. I have begun crossing into the 10K runs but they are slow. I know those times will come down. I am increasing my swim workouts to include 2250-2500 interval sessions. I'm sticking with the 2:00 minute time because I feel I have made big strides with that. Gonna go for a ride today- 16 miles as fast/hard as I can go and see what happens. Sound off people!! |
