Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() rsmoylan - 2012-07-09 2:49 PM BernardDogs - 2012-07-08 1:55 PM So I swam just shy of a mile today on the small lake that my parents live on. It's warm here ... so I went without the wet suit and swam just in my tri suit. I meant to take it nice and easy, but was surprised to learn that I was swimming at a 2:15 pace. I mapped what I thought my route was, and did so conservatively ... so maybe I swam a bit longer, but I was surprised I was going that slow. Similar problems with my legs sinking, JJ. I would site myself and lose all momentum that the wet suit and the buoyancy allows me to maintain. I've got a 50 mile ride planned tomorrow, but I think I'll swim again on Tuesday and just site by keeping the shore to my right, not looking ahead. And I'll push the pace a bit more to see what sort of improvement I can get. I never swam continuous distance in the pool ... just various combinations of intervals. So finding and keeping a pace in the open water is still a bit new to me. And the wet suit REALLY helps. I'm thinking a 310/910 is in order so you can upload your swim route and see if your sighting is off. Even without a wet suit you are no 2:15/100 swimmer. I'm hopeful that's the case, Scott. I'll get one more long swim in while I'm here, and I'll see how that one compares. There is a lot of room for error while plotting what I remember swimming on Map My Run. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ahutson - 2012-07-09 11:01 AM JJ, that is a beautiful picture. Is that your rod? Catch anything? I am saltwater addict. I fish, dive, ski, swim, etc. in the ocean. I have about 14.5 months left up here in landlocked KY and hopefully will be back on the coast.
Yup it's my rod. Snook fishing with that one. Have another one out about 250 yards fishing for shark. Several others have caught some 7 footers on this beach. Haven't had any luck yet but still have another 5 days here.
Congrats Jeff! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Morning, tri trainers! JJ, I'm all about some snook fishing. Some guys are catching 7 foot sharks where you are swimming?? Troy, if Scott says you need a garmin for swimming, your wife will understand. Tell her Scott said you need it and by Triathlete law, she cannot comment. Tell her to go by something if equal or greater value and everyone is happy. Hit the road yesterday for a run instead of bike. It was nice and cool (around 80) so I opted for a run to see how the lower temps would effect me. I did a 6 miler at a comfortable pace and finished at 57 minutes. Thats a 9:30 mile which I am happy with at this juncture. That was about 3 minutes faster than I ran it last weekend when it was 100. Gonna go for a swim today (2250 yds at 2:00 interval) and probably bike tomorrow. I might not ever bike again. MY disguisting pace makes me want to quit. I am debating switching over aquathlons and eliminating the bike all together. Sell it for new running shoes money.

Now this is just crazy talk. I feel your frustration, but biking will come. With your passion Ashley, you must show the bike who is boss. Whip it into going faster and then beg to stop. That and maybe have someone take a look at your fit. You may be leaving power on the table somewhere. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() First off, Ashley and no bike? That's like Reese's with no peanut butter! Moving on young man, get your butt back on the bike and get out there! If I want "whine" I'll have a nice merlot or chardonnay, I do not need it from a "dream crusher"! Jeff - sweet race, I'm very jealous! So I've been AWOL, between power failure, heat, family visiting, and the Holiday everythings been a mess. Oh, and I forgot to throw in sticking to my training during all of that! I was able to get in a 10 mile run last week even with the heat (first time I've done that in a couple of months, still trying to stick to Troy's running suggestion, it was painful, but I got it done!). I also banged out 44 miles on the bike on last Sunday. Hoping to do the full 50 this Sunday. I noticed that my front gears were not switching as nicely as I would like. I brought the bike into my LBS and they told me the derailer is definitely sticking. They lubed it up like crazy and said if that didn't work I would probably need to either replace it or wash it. For the bike guys out there, what does "washing" mean or actually do? I need to get on this sooner rather than later as I've signed up for my next race on 7/28. Next race is .5 swim, 12.5 extremely hilly ride, 4 mile run. Any input, as always, greatly appreciated. -Matt

You may want to ask your doctor about an antihistamine. That and the calamine lotion have worked for me in the past. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good morning, all. Hope everyone is having a good week! My first week of being an aquathlete is going great! Being free of the bike is amazing! Just kidding- I can't stop riding my bike. I know the speed will come and I need more work. I went on a ride Wednesday with a buddy that pushed me. It seemed like I was pushing it harder and then I forgot to stop my watch when we were done. It was under 90 minutes which still puts me around 17mph. I'll get there. Went for a run yesterday. Did 6.27 in 1:01:50. Thats a 9:51 m/m on a hill course so I'll take it. I wish my biking was imroving as much as my running and swimming. Jeff, if you never read another thing I say, read this. As a man very experienced with poison oak and ivy, go to the pharmacy and get Ivy-Dry soap. It is OTC. It comes in little bars. It works on poison ivy, oak, and sumac. It has a drying agent in it that goes into the poison oak and dries it out. Use it 3 times a day and rub all the infected areas. It says to use a new bar every time but I don't- they want to sell more bars. I'll use a bar until it falls apart. Wet the area/areas and rub with soap. You can let it dry if you want and then rinse. I let it sit for a few minutes and then wash it off. It will improve the healing time dramatically. Obviously, make sure you wash your hands thoroughly after cleaning. Add the calamine and antihistimine as well. They can't hurt. Gonna hit the pool today for 2250 yd interval swim. Hope everyone has a great weekend. Don't be afraid to sign up for a local aquathlon! They make triathlons look easy!

![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Took two weeks off and a lot has changed. Congrats to everyone on their race performances. Upgraded my bike to a Cannondale SuperSix and got a few rides on it - wow does it fly. Have my first long ride on it this Sunday - 62 miles on the north shore of LI. I also started Philly Marathon training with a 3:47 goal. Ran 19 miles this week including 5 miles at race pace this morning. Its amazing how much simpler a marathon training plan is after 16 weeks of tri training. Great weekend to all. - David |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ran 3 miles to my brothers house at 4:30am ...steady 9:20 pace ... Then off the the beach for a sunrise mile and a half OWS ... he did wetsuit, I kept on my onesie ... he is much faster in the wetsuit then I am in the onesie - in wetsuits I am about a beat slower than him. Finished in 50 minutes or so ... He then went off to bike and I plodded the 6 miles home at about a 10 min/m pace. Now off to Philly ... see you all in a few days - if you are racing this weekend GOOD LUCK!! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey peeps! I'm back in VT and will need to get back into the groove. I'm very pleased with the amount of training I was able get in while on vacation ... just missed on the travel days, as they involved long hours of driving. Went for a long easy ride today for 72 miles. Very hilly, and went at a pace my training buddy could hold, so I didn't get a true read on what sort of pace I could hold for that long. I held 19.5 for 53 on Monday, and probably could have held 17ish for this ride and still had something left for a run. Jeff: When I get poison ivy, the thing that gives me the best relief is to hold the itchy area under the hottest water I can stand for 3-5 minutes. Sometimes I start it warm and then slowly raise the temp. This will release all of your body's histamines and will give you some good relief for at least 3 hours. It's easy for me, as I usually get it on my ankles. If you had a hand-held shower, I suppose you could direct it to your chest area. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Morning All Today I can count myself as a multi event triathlete, as I have just completed my second sprint triathlon today!! The distances were short for a sprint, but the event was advertised as a novice event, as a way of introducing people to the sport, but as I had only competed in one before today, I classed myself as a novice Todays distances were 400 metre swim (swimming pool), 20k bike ride out and back track, 3k run (on grass). The event was not chip timed, but my wife and in laws timed me as best they could. Swim Was in the outside lane, 2 swimmers to a lane, luckily my lane partner elected to swim breast stroke rather than front crawl, which helped as we instantly split up. Swim went well, seemed to swim faster in the shallow end, swim time for 16 lengths was approximately 8 mins 40 seconds. I was second out of the pool in my wave Not sure on transition time, as my wife had to leave the swimming pool. Bike Ride As this was advertised as a novice event, there were lots of people on mountain bikes. Even though my brohter lent me his road bike, I still elected to ride my mountain bike as I feel comfortable on it and now how to change the gears quickly. Even though second out of the pool, had a really good transition, and was first away on the bike Bike ride was undulating, but not too heavy, concentrated on my own ride, was overtaken by two people from my wave (both on road bikes), but I retook one guy on one of the hills, which gave me added encouragement and motivation. Bike ride took approximately 35 minutes 10 seconds, which I was quite happy with Again not sure on transition time, but I know it was quick as already had my running gear on, so just needed to park my bike!! Run Run was 3k on grass, given the amount of rain we have had lately, it was in very good condition. Involved 2 laps of some fields before a short run back to the finish area. From my wave I was first to commence the running (but being a more naturally larger male), was caught and overtaken by 2 runners from my wave, but again, I was just focused on my own race! Had a goal of trying to get inside 1 hour 10 minutes before the race started, and to quote a famous saying from our forum, "I shattered some dreams", including my own and completed the race in approximately 62 minutes!! Really happy with the time today and was informed that there is another triathlon in my area in early September, but it is an Olympic distance triathlon not a sprint, tempted, but am going to give some additional thought Have a good weekend Gareth |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Gareth, That's what I'm talking about. Congratulations!!! That is a great effort and a great race report. Way to crush some dreams. The biggest difference with an oly is the swim. You should already be able to do the distances for the bike and run. If you can do the distance for the oly swim, I would say go for it.
I had a major breakthrough on the bike today. Did a two hour ride out and back course. Going out avg. 19.2, and coming back 21.2. The thing was that was pushing a larger gear with a much lower cadence on the way back. I felt fantastic coming off the bike and did a 30 min brick run with 15 minutes of tempo work in there. I feel awesome and tired right now. I hope everyone has a great weekend. What are you up to? |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() Gareth - Great race!!! Fun isn't it?!! Thanks to all for the poison oak suggestions. I have done them all and getting better. Thanks. Today has had a 40 mile ride and will go to gym for swim and indoor run later. Ride was 4 10 mile loops with average of total ride at each loop 19.4, 19.6 and finished the first 30 miles as 20 mph. Then did an easy loop that brought the average down to 19.2. Felt good - but tired. Napping waiting for the Kona TV show today. Watching the tour de france - I am kinda glad for the no drafting rules and they are crazy to be so close.......but wild to watch. Kona.......hmmmmm. Enjoy the day!

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Afternoon, all. Troy, I am sorry to hear about your friend. Thinking of the goood times you two had will help get you through this. I hope everyone had a good weekend. Mine was full of family visiting but I did squeeze in a 25 mile ride Saturday morning. It was at an UGLY pace of about 17mph but it was I could muster. Had a solid 6 days of training last week with a rest day yesterday. Gonna hit the pool today for a swim. Gonna try and do a mile non-stop. What do you all got on tap?? |

![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Congrats Gareth! Rode 62 miles on the Mansion Ride for Autism in LI. Averaged a hair under 15 mph, including an hour of rain and some big hills (for me). My longest ride ever and my first long ride on my new bike. Enjoyed myself and enjoyed my first organized, non-race event. - David Colman |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good morning peeps! Had a nice ride on my 20 mile route this morning. I knew I'd be adding it to Strava (http://app.strava.com/athletes/328106), so I wanted to really push the climbs to see how I compared to area riders. I felt really good with what I was able to do on those climbs ... but tied my overall PR for this route, so I need to not "recover" for so long after really pushing it on the climbs. I'll bust through the 20mph ceiling for this route very soon. I think I'll need to miss my trail race series tonight, as it may be the only evening I can get my rear wheel in to the shop for a truing prior to taking my bike to Lake Placid this weekend. What have you all been up to? |
|

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() BernardDogs - What have you all been up to?
I have been struggling mightily with the heat - ended up going to the gym and doing a 5 mile treadmill run in 45 minutes rather than do that same 5 miles on the road in this 94 degree weather and humidity that makes you drip sitting still ...
Had a good swim session yesterday with Aquafit ... On tap tomorrow is a quick 20 miler on the bike and most likely another gym session on the treadmill - late meeting at work is making me miss my regular pool day. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good morning peeps! Way to get it done, Paul. Getting in the miles however you can. It cooled off here (a bit) overnight with some thunderstorms but it was still pretty muggy for my morning run ... finished 7.5 and was soaked. It's going to be a light week for mileage on all fronts. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Morning tri trainers, Hope everyone is having a good week. I hit the pool monday for a 950 yard swim and finished in 17:44. Thats my race distance for next Saturday. Went for a run yesterday in the heat and had a very slow 6 miler at 1:02. That is a very slow pace but at 100 degrees, i can't expect much. It it still nice to be outside. Don't longer slow runs build endurance? Gonna hit the road today for a 25 mile ride. I forgot to stop my watch after my last ride so my timing was not accurate. I need to remember to do that. Hope everyone has a great day! Train smart!

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Starting a lighter week, volume wise, for me. Round two on the Shelburne tri is this Saturday. I will have my revenge on the course. Just got back from a lovely family vacation too. We went to Storyland in NH. It was a lovely time, and didn't miss any workouts. Looking forward to ripping it up on Sat. |
