Well first race of the season this weekend. My son races Saturday and I go Sunday(Oly). All week predicting sunny and 31Celsius(87F) and now they are predicting cooler and showers. I can live with the cooler but not so happy about the showers, unless they hold off for the run. Smile

A lot of hills on both the run and the bike. Last year I had major cramping in the quads on the run. Had to walk up some of the hills. Hope to avoid that this year.

After that we are off to Penticon for the rest of the week for holidays.

Question: How far/long do you warm up for your swim? Basically in the past I tend to just get wet and get moving for warmup.  I find my arms feel fatigued after about 200 meters but feel better as the race goes on...

Yay!  you should rock it with all of your training!

I usually swim 200-300 for warm up prior to a race (2-3 laps of the warmup area at our local tris.)  I find I feel better after that than starting from scratch.  I do it easy to stretch out.  If that would fatigue you then I'd dial back.  How much do you warm up when you do a swim workout?  (I usually do 400-600, so this is shorter than a swim workout warmup for me.)

I usually do 300 meter warm up. Even then my arms feel like a lactic acid build up. It goes away after a couple hundred more meters.  I guess i should just shut up and HTFU! Smile

How hard are you going in warmup?  I really think about stretching it out while warming up.  Maybe slow it down a little and really reach out with your arms?  It's easily to get in and hammer too hard, but save that for the race - at least that's what works for me.  Even a little really long catch up stroke is good for elongating your stroke - but don't drill your full warm up.

SportzVision - 2012-07-10 9:48 AM Oh yeah and we started our 29th year of marriage on the 7th!  Celebrating this weekend in Tahoe with Chicago and the Doobie Brothers!

Congrats on you anniversary! What a huge milestone!!Glad you got to celebrate!!I've got 26 more years till i hit that milestone, any words of advice???

I want to hear your advice too!

Wish I had some amazing advice or that we knew what we were doing but we were both young when we married.  No one thought we should get married...so we eloped.  Even his best friend, on our wedding day, as I am getting ready to walk down the isle, said, "my car is right around the corner; we can just leave.", where he would have taken me I don't know...we always have a good laugh about that.  Here are my suggestions and what I have learned:

  • never start, do or accept anything you do not want to do for the rest of your married life together.
  • no matter what others say, remember, its only a problem when its a problem
  • fight fair, don't call each other names and don't bring up past offenses
  • mean what you say and say what you mean...I learned early on that if my husband didn't or did do something that hurt my feelings, 99.9% of the time it was because he didn't know any better.  I had to tell him what I wanted. Doesn't mean I always got what I wanted...like I still live in the desert and not the beach...
  • have a sense of humor
  • accept your differences...we are completely opposite. If I love it he hates it!  We don't compromise we just accept it as fact.
  • have wild angels

That's awesome that you guys eloped! I had an amazing wedding day but my hubby and I always said if we did it again we would elope to vegas!! WHen we hit 25 we'll re-new there for sure!! I love your tips, I totally agree with the accept your differences!! My hubby and I are total opposites to, but compromise is always possible with us! Have a great anniversary weekend!

Good luck on the race, hoping a nice day and no rain!!! Enjoy your holidays after!!! I don't really warm-up for my swims....I get in the water get wet, get my head wet and get rid of that AHHHHH feeling when you first hit the water, I do a few strokes maybe 100m and then get back out...probably not the best advice but truely it's what I do!

Sprints are a lot of fun. I ended my season with one last year(Lacombe/gull lake) Hopefully they are putting it on again so I can do it again!

Have fun!(and kick butt of course!)

Good luck Thor & Terra on your race this weekend!

I don't usually warm up before my races, so it does take me a few hundred meters to get in the groove.  Of course, my swim times probably reflect this!

No racing for me this weekend.  I have a 17-mile run planned for Saturday and a 55-mile bike ride on Sunday.

Best of luck to you and your son! It should be a fun weekend for you.

As far as warm up for races go I like to get in the water for Olys and sprints just to get the blood flowing a bit.  Like you, my arms tend to feel it a bit after the first few hundred yards so it's nice to get out of the way before the race starts.  For longer races I use the first few hundred yards of the swim as a warm up.

I too am racing this weekend.  There's a local race tomorrow night.  I am running a 5k at 7:30 and a 10k at 8:30.  I've never run both races before, just the 10k so it should be fun.  There's a beer garden afterwards so it should be good

I'm doing something wrong.  Everyone has races that end at beer gardens.  I've only been at it for 3 years now, but no beer gardens for me yet.  I'm having wife bring me a 22oz. bevi on ice for Half.

Hope you kick some tail on the runs.  goal times?  Are you going all out for both runs, just the 5, or the 10, or are you just running for training?

It's sunday! And just so happens after a week long with hot hot weather it's supposed to rain and be gloomy all day....Never fails!! Out of all the races i've done this year they have all been less then sunny weather except the mother's day run!! Oh well....it's a sprint, i've survived a HIM in rain this should be a piece of cake! !hahaha

How did the races go?

Hi guys! I had a decent couple of races last night.  The 5k was first and I ran it in 19:40.  During that last mile when I was dying I seriously questioned why I signed up for both races.  I really didn't want to run again.  Had about 40 minutes between the races which was just enough time to recover a bit and forget about the pain of the first race.  The 10k didn't go as well but I managed to hang on for a 41:56.  All in all not a bad night.  I'm not sure if I would do the double again, but still cool to say I did it.

Hope to hear how our other racers fared today!

Holy cow! That's some fast running! Congrats on a great evening of races. What was your strategy? Did you go all out on the 5k?

Nice work!  Looks like a pretty solid effort (to me at least) for a broken-up 15k!
