Detroit Dan - 2010-07-27 9:39 AM I will have family there, If you want to hand anything off to someone, they can hold it. I'm sure you will be back WAY before me.
Flash light. Now that is a good Idea. I would have never thought of that.  I'm in wave #4 and will be starting at 7:11 AM.

Sweet.  I'll rack the night before and bring my pump then.  You and anyone else who wants to use it is welcome.  My family will be there, but they're not coming till around 8 or so.  My wave doesn't start till 7:46.

While you can't leave the pump next to the bike, I've seen people leave them next to the fence.  Last year, the one fence was pretty well protected by a dune, so it would be pretty obvious if someone were trolling for gear within reach.

Are we allowed to leave our gear bags in the transition area?  I was thinking of trying to stuff my bike pump in my bag.

Probably, but you'll have to put it over next to the fence.  There isn't any "extra" room around the bikes.  Bike shoes, running shoes, race belt, maybe a running hat (you can put your helmet on your handlebars).

just a quick shout out to all BTers who are doing Steelhead this weekend.  I have been reading the thread, but just lurking.

Good Luck to everyone this weekend.  As of today, it seems the weather is going to cooperate.  High of 77 degrees with winds at 6mph.

It will be interesting to see if we end up 'wetsuit legal' or not.  I don't mind either way, but my husband would REALLY prefer the wetsuit.  I am wishing I had a sleeveless because I am going to burn up in my full wetsuit.

I have one more workout day tomorrow-short swim, 1:30 bike and 30 minute run.

Rest day Thursday...drive to Benton Harbor Friday (where I may do a VERY short ride and swim).  I really am hoping that we can drive most of the bike route.  When I did Timberman last year we were there a few days early and I got to ride much of the course.

Here's to calm seas, calm winds and a few clouds on the run the keep the heat down.

The flashlight is a good idea, never thought of one!!!

I am back in the states and headed up Friday, should be up there around 1-2 pm.

I have a frame mounted pump I carry on my bike if anyone needs to use one. Its a mighty morph with a pressure gauge.

I put my bike together last night and rode a bit to make sure it wont fall apart on the ride. Probably  gonna one of the mechanics there give it a good once over on Friday.

I am having a hard time believing lake Michigan is that warm not to be wetsuit legal. All the times I have been over there, the water was always cool, even in the summer. But, you guys are there, so it must be so. Maybe I should pick up a sleeveless suit up there.

Were we all going to meet up somewhere?

Glad you made it back State-side safe and sound.  A few weeks ago I was in Saugatuck with the family and Lake Michigan was like bath water it was so warm - I've never been in it when it was like that.  However, a friend of mine sent me a satellite view from MSU that measures the surface temp of the lake and it was in the high 60's as of 2 days ago.  So hopefully we'll be ok for wet suits.

My wife, daughter and I are going to get there probably between 1-2 and are going straight to the Expo to check in before going to our hotel.

I am watching the surface water temp at
http://www.coastwatch.msu.edu/twomichigans.html

The tricky thing about that site is when there is cloud cover, the lake surface temps show up as much lower than they really are.  So even if you see that things are at 68 degrees, I'm thinking it isn't accurate . . . because of the cloud cover.

I'm packing both my full-sleeve and sleeveless wetsuit, hoping I'll use one of them.

Does anyone know exactly when the call is made on whether wetsuits are legal or not?

This images from 7/28 at 3:10 AM looks pretty clear and seems like it might be the best/most accurate recent image of the surface temps.

Looks like we are on the cusp of being no wetsuit legal.

Well, as long as it stays below 78.....Its not supposed to be real hot over the next few days so hopefully it'll stay below that.  As for when they'll make the call, my guess is its a game day decision like the direction we'll be swimming,  but we'll find out more at the meetings on Friday.

Anybody from the Ann Arbor - Plymouth area?  I'm competing in the WP Steelhead this weekend and I need some help getting my bike back home.  It’s a long story but I'm taking the train back to Ann Arbor and they don't allow bikes.  If you could bring my bike back to the Ann Arbor or Plymouth area I could pick it up from you on Sunday.  Thanks

I'm from Milford.  My bike rack will hold 2 and I'll just have mine so I can help you out.  I'm going to be leaving same day after the event.  If its raining, I'll  probably be leaving pretty soon after - if not, we'll stick around for some of the festivities.  I'll PM you with my cell phone.

We're leaving the Detroit area about 11:30 or so and going straight to the Expo - maybe 2:00ish or so.  After that getting checked into the hotel then taking care of the bike.

I am headed out of southern Indiana at 8 am. Should put me up there around 1-2 pm.

Depending, might check into the hotel first or go right in and register.

I sent my cell phone number out to a few. Gimme a call.

I was worried about mileage going in - but I had a phenomenal race this year.  Took 25 mins off my time from last year and had a great run!!!  Very happy with how it all turned out.

I still don't know how I feel about the crazy scene at these big races and if I race another HIM it might be Welland or Ottawa - something small.  I did meet a lot of cool people this year though!!!

... however, I am considering the full aquabike at Cedar Point ... which would also be a zoo... Hmmmm....

I thought the race itself was well-organized.  The expo/registration was a zoo, something needs to be reorganized on that front.

Other than the rain before the race, the weather was just about perfect for fast racing.  I was very happy with my performance on race day, other than losing 20 minutes changing a flat and some other difficulties having to do with my tire.  Wish I could get myself sub-2 hours on the run...need to focus on my running faster and not on my true love of biking fast

Because of the bike flat, I am signing up for an OLY on August 15th.  Hoping to get one clean, good race in this season.  I am typically not one to do a lot of races.
