Hi Pam.. one of the problems I have if I run too much on the treadmill is that the consistent flat surface is hard on the muscles, as the motion is the same all the time. When you run outside the ground is not perfectly flat so your muscles get stressed differently, although it's only a small change in the stress it is enough to prevent that soreness &/or potential injury. You can try varying the incline and speed, even for a minute it will give your legs a break. Or you can toughen up like us Canadians and run outside !!!

Subject: A weekly update post??
Just wondering if the group would like to do a weekly update on our training , how things are going and what we have planned. Maybe we could all check in at the beginning of the week (Mon or Tues)with a post in this thread.
I still haven't got a plan down on paper and am just doing what I feel like each day, which is not the best way to do things I know. I'm going to try to swim at least twice a week, preferably 3 times, and running will be my focus as I train for the May marathon.
What are you all doing?

Things are going pretty well for me. I've managed to get really serious about the winter maintenance plan and I've been able to stick to it. It has been pretty intense the first couple of weeks but now I'm settling into it and it is getting a bit easier.

I'm useless without some sort of plan so in the future I'm going to make sure that I always know the next step before I finish the current plan.

How about everyone else.

Hey,
I'm just keeping true to my marathon plan. I have 16 weeks left on the plan and then the big day is here. The longer mile is starting soon and we will see how I handle it. Wish me luck!

You'll handle it just fine !! I'll answer your question about my first marathon here.. It was Ottawa 2000, about 2000 participants I think. It was a two loop route (they've changed it since then to a one loop). On the first half I carried my camera and took pictures of the start, and along the way. At the half I dropped the camera off to my husband and he took pics of me at the finish. I am a slow, back of the pack runner and really did minimal training (peak mileage around 40 I think) but the experience of crossing that finish line was one of the highlights of my life.

Just curious what everyone has planned for their A, B, and C races so far. Or if you're not done planning, that's ok too. I seem to always be adding races when I hear about fun ones to do.

Here's what I've got so far:

  • PF Chang's 1/2 marathon, Tempe, AZ - 1/14/07 (C)
  • 24 Hrs in the Old Pueblo MTB relay race, Oracle, AZ - 2/17-2/18/07 (B)
  • Ragnar Relay del Sol 192 mile run relay, Wickenburg to Scottsdale, AZ - 3/30-3/31/07 (C)
  • Ironman Arizona, Tempe, AZ - 4/15/07 (A+)
  • Tucson Summer Aquathlon Series, Tucson, AZ - 5/07 - 7/07 (C
  • Deuces Wild Oly & Xterra, Show Low, AZ - 6/2-6/3/07 (B)
  • Soul Ride 100 mile MTB race, Oracle, AZ - 10/07 (A)
  • Blue Water Oly Tri, Parker, AZ - 11/11/07 (B)

Break out those race calendars and let's see what you've been planning.

Here's my list so far with a few maybe's added in.

Jan 14 - Richmond Road Races 5k (registered)
May - Where's Franktown 5k run
May - Early Bird Sprint Tri w/ pool swim (maybe)
June - Ottawa Riverkeeper's Sprint Tri (registered)
July - Graham Beasley Sprint Tri (registered)
Aug - 1000 Islands Olympic (big maybe)
Sept - Canadian Sprint Tri (maybe)
Sept - Joy of Effort 5k run (maybe)
Oct - Toronto Half-Marathon (super-big maybe)

I will probably try to do a couple of other running events in March/April. The new race calendar for the area is not out yet so I'm not sure what is available. I may also try to enter a swim meet or two this winter.

Oh and here's a little brag... there was a small article in the local weekly paper about the Dec swim meet and I got mentioned as winning the novice 25m free and the 50m breaststroke. They even listed my times. They didn't list all the results so I felt pretty chuffed to get special mention. I'll have to send a copy to my dad.

My list seems to keep growing, this is it so far:

April - Kingston 1/2 marathon
May - Missassauga marathon (A)
- Ottawa 1/2 marathon (if I can get the weekend off work)
June- Beat Beathoven 8K run
- Smith Falls sprint tri , my first !!
July - Wolfe Island Classic 10K run
- Graham Beazley Oly tri
Aug - Ktown tri , long course (A)
- 1000 Island sprint tri
Sept - Canadian 1/2 IM , for fun!
Oct/Nov - fall marathon (A)

I've pretty much got my training mapped out from now until the Sept 1/2 IM, now we'll just see if I can keep up with what I've planned. This week has not been good for training and I've taken a couple extra rest days because of this cold, which is almost gone finally.
I will need some advice on how to peak and taper for my A race at the beginning of Aug without negatively affecting the 1/2 IM training. I'll be asking you some specific questions in the near future.

First I must give my congratulations to Rae and PirateGirl for your races yesterday. You both did great !!
Last week was not good for me. I only logged 17 running miles. I skipped my long run. But now the cold is pretty much gone and I'm feeling better.
It's a new week. Decided not to swim today, as it is storming out so i don't want to drive (the 25 minutes) to the pool. I'll do a TM run. Tomorrow is swim lesson, and I'll do a 13 mile long run after. Wed will be rest day. Thurs maybe a short run after work. Friday will be swim and run, and Sat and Sun will be run days. Now we'll just see if I stick to the plan.
How does everyone feel about the past week? And what do you have planned for this week?

Wow...everyone has some really cool races planned!

Last week went well for me. My quads are still screaming sore right now, so I've decided to push my running workouts to later in the week and try to rest the legs. I swam easy last night just to try to help with the soreness. But going up stairs and getting up from a seating position is still torture right now!

Got a couple of big bike rides planned for this weekend. Saturday is a ride on the race course for the 24 hour mountain bike race with the team, then Sunday is a 4 hr road ride to practice my nutrition.

Hope everyone has a great week!

Last week was really good for me and I was pleased to have completed a race this early in the year. Legs fell good again.

This week is nuts for me. I play with a small band, basically a bunch of friends that gets together once a week to jam. Well, this Friday night we have our one "gig" of the year. That means extra rehearsals. That cuts into training time. Plus I'm feeling a little under the weather.

So I've decided not to sweat it this week. I'll get whatever workouts I can done and I'm not going to feel guilty or stress out about those I miss. Next week I'll get back to being relentless. ;-)

I'm also going to Toronto this Sat/Sun for my niece's first birthday so that will disrupt the weekend training. Should be able to still get a couple of runs in though.

Just curious...what do you play? My husband loves to play guitar, bass, banjo, and the drums. I, however, am musically disinclined.

I play guitar and mandolin. Lately, mostly mandolin, since we have another guitarist in the group. I also sing most of the songs that we do.

So I made a decision today. I'm definitely going to train for an Olympic distance in August. Once my current training plan ends (Feb 18), I'm starting a 26 week Olympic distance plan. Yikes!

So now I just need to register for the event to make it final.

I know you can do it Rae! Is it one local to me, maybe 1000 Islands or Ktown??

1000 Islands. Brockvillle is only an hour from my place. Have you ever done that one? If so, how's the course?

I have 'spectated' at this one. I do know the area, I worked in Brockville for a while. The swim is down by blockhouse island. The bike and run would both be pretty flat. I think the weather will be the biggest factor in the middle of August, as in HOT. I'll see you there anyway, I'm doing the sprint so I can get a nice finish line photo for you ! (if I'm even finished before you!)

Cathy, I know what you mean about the probability of it being HOT. Well at least the course is pretty flat.

As far as the heat goes, you get what you get I guess. Last year the Graham Beasley in CP was a super-hot humidex day. I thought my head was going to explode on the run.

Ladies...I have decided to pull out of the Ironteam for this year. I am just not prepared for it and the only reason I was sticking with it was because I didn't want to disappoint other people. Not a smart reason. So, I'm going to focus on a marathon in the spring and a century in the fall. I'll look to '08 to be the year of Leslie's IM!! I'll still use my training log, here, but I don't want to waste a mentor team space for someone who is really earning it as a triathlete. Thank you all for everything. You really are an awesome group!!!

SO hard. Aside from myself, I was worried about letting my donors down, my teammates, my friends and family that had been bragging about me, etc. But I had a lot of talks with them over the last couple of weeks and they are super supportive. I really wanted this desperately, but I had to admit sooner, rather than later, that this year is just too soon for this kind of commitment.

Thank you for making me feel welcome!

Don't be silly...just because your goals changed doesn't mean you have to leave the group. You're not going to get rid of us that easy.

I know it was a hard decision, but ya gotta do what's right for you. And you learned that '08 would be a better year for the IM. So it just means you have all that much more time to research, train, prepare, etc. It's cool that all your friends and family were excited, and I'm sure they'll be just as excited next year too. It's great to have a cheering section like that!

Awesome! Have ya signed up yet? With your winter plan you'll be going into the Oly training plan strong. You're going to kick butt in that Oly!

Re: the heat. Have you tried salt tabs? In the extreme heat down here they really make a difference.
