I have to admit it was a reall eye-opener. In the first few 25's, I was all over the place, heart rate was crazy high, I was swallowint water, etc... etc...

But the more I continued, and the more I focused, the better it got. But I really need to concentrate. I find so far that it is the breathing that is the most difficult. I need to work on proper technique.

My goal is to be confortable with the swim, and mostly be efficient. I don't want to burn off energy for the rest of the race. Of course... speed is always good also!

Hey Ya'll ! Just wondering if it's too early for me to be finding a mentor group seeing is how I am barely off the couch, cigarette still lit, a dusty YMCA membership card somewhere in the depths of my purse, and my Wal Mart bicycle collecting dust in the garage........Any hope for me?

Hi all--btw I signed up for the Tour de France Challenge (oh, duh ... sorry ... guess my avatar and sig gives it away now).  Lord knows I need bike time like, well, a newbie!

I put in my first TdF ride today--just 15 minutes (so I was a little tired from the TEN MILE RUN I did right before it)--but it was so great just to cruise and enjoy myself.  I was in flipflops .  But with a helmet, always.

Also, I really am a complete newbie--I did my two triathlons, both of which had significant hills, in the SAME GEAR the whole way through--I still don't know how to shift gears (as stated in my intro post.  That, and the cruiser handlebars).  However, just doing a nice smooth ride today on a deserted street to get the minutes in gave me the perfect opportunity to play around with the gears and start figuring out the intricacies of my bike.  The dudes at the LBS did point out that it's a pretty high-end, sensitive bike and you really have to know the gears, how that individual bike responds, and how to finesse 'em.  Okay, okay!

I got the bike through a stroke of luck ... I had no concept of its performance or value, and clearly, neither did the seller.

Hey Bill,

I'd like to join up with your group. As a current super clyde (236lbs) and having just done my first sprint tri (Redondo) I think I could learn a lot.

TriAya, Hey good job w/ your bike. Do you have clipless pedals, they really help although take some getting used to. Also make sure that you are fitted (seat position, crank length, handlebars and neck length) so that you can "practice productively". I also us a mirror which has saved my bacon at least twice, my roadie friends laugh at me but guess who they want at the back of the pace line hollering "car back" on busy roads. Welcome to our new members, I really don't have any idea where our "so called" leader is so I guess we are just kind of winging it. Everyone is welcome as far as I'm concerned, I love a party and the more participants we have the better. This Tri thing is about getting to know others, having fun, getting healthy and testing your personal limits. In my book competing against others is not important, I did that in my other sports for many years and working together is much more fun! Hope you all have a good week training and enjoying life. Keep in touch.

What Boneboy said re. a party, x2.  I'm hesitant to chime in b/c I've only been in this group a few days myself, but it's a great and laid-back bunch.  Besides, we could use another chick, and the guys need to shore up their reserves what with all the feminine infiltration here.

woo hoo , does that mean I'm in? I was reading some of the training plans on this site and I have decided on the couch to 5k program (the fast track/agressive one). It doesn't look too difficult, but not too easy. I just gotta work on actually getting out of bed.......
Here's a question, does anyone here have any comments on using a Bowflex as part of their training plan, maybe as a backup on rainy days or regularly?

Emily, Remember that you are starting to train for endurance efforts (swim, bike run). I'm into sport specific training and obviously feel like doing those activities will be your best bet toward improving. Many good ancillary programs for building your strength, power and flexibily are available and Bowflex I'm sure will give you an advantage in that regard, just don't make that the primary focus of what you are trying to do. I look forward to following your training progress. The most important thing is to just get out and do them with some regular consistency. You will become addicted (like the rest of us) to this new strange and very healthy lifestyle! We are all basically newbie's and I for one certainly don't have the answers just what seems to be working for me. That's why this forum is so cool, we can all bounce things back and forth and see what sticks. Stay positive, have fun and all of us are with you as you daily climb out of that bed!

Boneboy -

I am no coach and expert, but be careful not to overdo it too fast. I noticed in your log that you had quite the jump in training volume from week to week.

Don't what to see you on the sideline!

PS: Congrats on your first brick workout. Did mine a few weeks ago. That's when it really came together in my mind that I was on the road to actually becoming a triathlete!

Welcome aboard Yan, Pete and Lazy.  This place is a forum to share and learn from each other as you guys get started in this sport.  I'm always available to answer questions and will do my best to get back to you guys if you send me a PM although my summer schedule is hectic to say the least.

Nice job on the swim Brian.  I didn't do so hot in my swim at Sunday's race so I need to get my a$$ in the pool a bit more.  As with all things, doing more of it will make you more comfortable and better at it.

Keep it up!!

Hear, hear.  Hearty welcome to Pete and Emily.  Thanks all for making me feel at home here.

Had been quite frustrated with the bike as of late simply b/c of stark newness to cycling--learned to ride a bike a week before my first triathlon (2005) and didn't cycle very much before my second one (June 2007). Much sympathy for swim frustrations, because that's how I've felt on the bike--which hand goes where, can't steer with just one so how do I change gears, what is changing gears, ouch that's the pedal slamming into my heel, etc.

Finally had a breakthrough in cycling today (more in log).  Being part of BT Tour de France Challenge has helped immensely ... I'm a smart girl, but until I started doing short rides to fulfill my Stage quotas, it had never occurred to me to do short, easy rides on clear paths to learn the bike, learn how to ride the bike, learn how I am on the bike.

Anyway, on my long ride today, it all finally came together.  Just realized now that not only did it turn out to be an epic ride, but I managed to drink from the water bottle, eat some Clif Blocks, and change to different/appropriate gears all while riding.

Not that putting in a 32-mile ride over last week's long one of 20 was particularly wise--didn't plan it that way, but when it clicks, sometimes you have to go for it.  In any case, I am really looking forward to my recovery week next week!

Hello to all. I have been MIA for a week or so. I hope everyone is doing well. Welcome Yanti, Pete and Emily. Yanti, congrats on getting more familiar with the Bike. It can be pretty overwhelming at times. Keep trainging, the weight will follow. I just finished a massive swim. I am now going to pass out.

Triaya, I'm so proud of you. Enjoyed reading about your "epic" ride. Isn't this sport great, if your fear of the bike parallels my fear of the swim then we both can appreciate how overcoming and conquering those phobias is a sign of real success. As I've noted previously it's NOT about competing with others or winning events it's about the personal battles each of us wage with weight, the run, the bike, the swim or even our personal "demons" (I'm speaking to you Emily) and how we choose to face them. Yanti you obviously are a champion in my book and now that you've made that first step your bike training will undoubtedly take-off! Keep up the good work. Emily, hey I'm watching your logs and don't see anything yet. Come on girl, get out and do something, even if it's a good walk. One day builds on the next and it gets easier when you create the habit of regular exercising. In my office (I'm an Orthopedic and Chiropractic Sports Injury Specialist) one of the first things we have our patients do is to start moving. Find out what you like to do, and start doing it. I care about you Emily and your previous commitment to our group indicates that you want to make some lifestyle changes. I'm asking you to be accountable for your own health. If I can help you in anyway then E-mail me privately or tell us about it here on the forum. Ryan, hey I' still waiting to hear your incredible weight loss story. I'm so inspired by the 90 lb weight loss, I can hardly wait to read about it. Aren't we lucky and blessed to be able to participate in such a healthy and exciting sport. I hope each of you will take a minute to meditate on what you have in your life to be thankful for. I look forward to hearing more from each of you.

Boneboy, thanks for the constant lifts.  Your kindness, and the support in this group, are at the top of today's gratitude list, for sure.

Workouts today felt sluggish after yesterday's epic ride.  I haven't been on a periodized schedule for so long (well, not like this one, anyway!) ... is it normal to feel so UGH and drag oneself through the end of the third build-up week (I'm on a 3 build, 1 recovery)?

Have no fear Boneboy! My lifestyle change "one year anniversary" is coming up on July 18th, and I am working on a somewhat longer piece that will wrap-up that amazing (at least for me) journey.

Aya... the important part to find out is how are YOU feeling? I guess the biggest mistake must of us Age Groupers that train for fitness (and not for a living) is to overdo it, even when the volume does not appear to be that big. Of course, it sometimes might not seem that much to you when you compare with others on BT or elsewhere, but it's still a lot compared to Jane and John Couch Potato!

When I got injured last winter (overuse muscle, lower right leg) I kept telling myself (and anyone who might listen) but I am ONLY running 25/30 miles a week! Guess what, that's 100% more than I used to run a few months previous to that, and also on a heavier frame.

Enjoy your recovery week next week. That's what they are for. I find it hard sometime to tie myself down, but your body will thank you, and you might be surprised at how it will respond later on.

Yeah, it's normal, especially after overdoing it yesterday.  Part of the discipline in this sport is as much not pushing yourself as it is pushing yourself.  I think your ride yesterday was awesome, but try not to overdo it on a regular basis lest the evil burnout monster rear its head.  The 10% rule is what I try to go by and encourage others to as well (don't do more than 10%  in time week over week; so if you did 20 last week, try to keep this week at 22 etc.).  Besides, there is no "normal" in this sport, only what works for you!  Keep it up.

Hey all, anybody watch the Tour today. What incredible riders. The desent was unbelievable, those guys hammered for approximately 5 hours in 90o heat and averaged over 20 mph while climbing over 10,000 feet. Some of the grades were over 9%. Ever tried climbing a 9% grade, I have and ended up walking my bike after about 5 minutes. Lance's Discovery team practiced near my home, Solvang, California (for his last 3 tours) and one climb here is 9%. I tried it with my roadie friends and about died. I have a tremendous amount of respect for those guys. Watching their bike handling skills was pretty impressive too. Hope everyone is doing okay. The weather is beautiful here and I enjoyed a wonderful day of training, being with my wife and savoring life. Hope to hear from each of you this week.

Hi all! How'd weekend training/races go? Thanks for all the reminders to ease up--even in a big build-up week need to ease back on sections if I go longer/harder on one than anticipated.

Yeah, been losing sleep to watch that dodgy little bike race in France. If you didn't notice/don't remember, I'm also part of the BT TdF challenge , adds to the excitement.

I did have a very startling "first" today.

There's always a gazillion pics of me; my friends are a bunch of happy shutterbugs and we do a lot of events/social/sports stuff (oh, and I'm an attention hog). My coach just posted a bunch of pics of our AIDS Marathon training groups, and I kept looking through them, but couldn't find any with me.

I looked harder at the ones with people from my pace group and with great shock realized that the normal-sized girl in there was me. That's why I couldn't find me. I was looking for the fat chick and she wasn't there. I am sure other people haven't thought I was fat for a long time, so my body has been making the transition, but my mind finally caught up. I have a ways to go, but I didn't know until today how far I'd come.

I know a bunch of us have some serious before-and-afters and all of you, for overcoming whatever your personal challenges have been, have my deepest respect. Thank you so much for the continuing inspiration.

AWESOME!! As I get ready for Wednesday (one year anniversary of lifestyle change) I am also starting to try to dig out some "before" pics. I find interesting that I was not to keen on getting "immortalized" when I was "bigger"!

Just be smart about it. Trust me on that. I went from zero swimming 3 weeks ago, to a great 30 minute at the pool yesterday that included 2 X 200M. Three weeks ago, I nearly died swimming 50 M!!

Just stay calm, fluid, long strokes, glide... and repeat "this is almost over! This is almost over! This is almost over!"
