So I need to make the decision as to whether or not to join USAT. I had to pay a one time license fee of $10 for my race because I wasn't a member. However of the 3 other races I am looking at, only one other is USAT sanctioned. So it is cheaper for me to pay the $10 for each of those than it is to pay the $40 for the USAT membership. The question I have is this; Is it worth it to become a member if I stick with it and what are the perks of being a member?

Still reading more on this. I just thought I would pose the question to the forum and see who is and is not a member.

Josh

On an off Ironman year I do not become a member of USAT.  There are very few perks that come with it I find worthwhile.  The only reason I do it on IM years is it drastically shortens one of the many long lines you need to stand in.  Just my opinion though on its value.  Some think it is very worthy.

mntbiker21 - 2011-01-10 7:42 PM Another question.

Have you looked into the new 5150 series? The second race I am looking at doing is in this new International race length. It seems to basically be a set Sprint distance.

1.5 k - Swim
40 K - Bike
10 k - Run

[/QUOte

Yes, this is a set International or Olympic distance race distances you have posted above.  Have not done any of the races but did ride with the race director of the new one coming to Iowa last year.  Sounds like a good set-up.

Great! I feel like I am already making progress and this group thing and doing the log everyday is really keeping me motivated. Thanks again Bryan for taking the time to help all of us.

Good So far. Between life and a planned rest day, I missed 2 days in a row but back on track today.

All in all what is your feeling about how the group is going compared to previous years?

Doing well, ready to move on from the 5k plan I started but I will see it through knowing that its helping establish a base of endurance for me.

The snow messed up my plans the last few days, but I'm getting back into my routine now. So, I'd say it's going well overall.

Swimming will surely show you how out of shape you are... lol. It's just a totally different type of cardio. It will be nice to build up to at least 500m without having to stop and rest. I'm sure it will take a couple of months.

I signed up for Triathlon for Autism July 31st in Belmar NJ. Bryan was right when he said it would be motivational to sign up for an event.

You're not kidding! I can ride a bike all day long but I'm anaerobic after about 80 yards in the water! Although its only been 2 weeks that I've been working out, I am really  starting to feel like I'm making progress but I've still got a long way to go. I've started reading the "Triathlon Swimming Made Easy" book and it has some good drills in it. I'll probably watch the video tomorrow. I'll post a review here after I get a handle on it and let you know if its helping.

BTW is anyone looking to buy a wet suit? If so, try sierratradingpost.com they are an overstock type of website so its hit or miss what they have, but they have 4 or 5 in stock right now. If you see one, PM me or post here. I buy a good amount of stuff from them and I always have a coupon.

I can't sign up for my event until February 4th. I guess they're giving everyone one last month to duck out if they want too, lol.

Good discusions on swimming and getting signed up for a race.  Swimming is one of those sports where you can work harder and harder and it only leads to frustration.  It is all about technique.  Most people I know will have a day swimming where there is just a break through.  Things click because they have been working on proper technique and doing drills every swim.  Then the next time they try to go for a longer distance they just keep going and all of a sudden they have swam 500 straight.  It might not feel it at this point but it will happen if you keep working on it.  Until that happens keep working on your technique.  If you find yourself tired and gasping for breath after a 50 you are going way too hard.  I usually do my warm up 500 at a pace that I could swim for hours at.   Nice and easy just to get a feel for the water.  Once you can stretch the distance out and you are getting your technique down then you can start hammering out intervals.  Sets of 5-10x50 or 100 at a certain interval.  (ie) Every minutes, every 70 seconds, etc.  So that's what the clock at the pool is for   If you want to get better at swimming I would say 3x a week in the pool.  Good luck everyone.

I would be willing to bet if you swam 3x a week you could do this in less than 1 month.

Races I am doing, hmmm.  Starting out with a few shorter run races in March and then leading to a half marathon in May.  I then end the run alone season and move into tri's.  I have a few old stand by favorote sprints I do every year along with a few new ones.  Towards the end of July I will do a tune-up half IM to gauge overall fitness and pacing and then the finale of IMWI on Sept. 11th.

Some drills I like to work on are as follows.

1.  Side kicking.  Roll on side and work on kicking from the hips and keeping balance.  Bottom arm is straight ahead of you and top arm in on your hip.  Kick for 8-10 kicks and then do three strokes putting you on opposite side.  Keep repeating all the way across the pool.  This will help with balance and getting you to work on rotation.

2.  Kicking drills.  I like to use a pull bouy instead of a board.  With a board it forces you to bring head out of water and drops hips.  You do not want this.  Both arms out front with head in the water looking straight down.  Kick from hips, not knees.  Whenever kicking work on keeping legs inside shadow of the body.

3.  Another good drill to keep legs tight is to put a band around legs at knees.  This keeps legs tight.  If they are splayed wide open you are creating lots of drag.

4.  Fins.  Using fins helps you to go faster and feel what it feels like to swim faster.  Helps also to get more distance in a certain amount of time and work on form.

5.  Hand paddles.  Use these sparingly.  Paddles help you develope a feel for the water and make you understand where the "pull" is coming from.  Don't use to often or if you have weak shoulders.  You will feel this the next day.

Try some of these drills and see what happens.  If you need clarification please ask and I'll try to help.  Remember, swimming is all about technique.  If you get the technique down you are way ahead of the game.

So what do you mean by keeping your legs in the shadow of your body?

I guess this could be better explained as keeping your legs within the slipstream of your shoulders.  You punch a whole through the water with your shoulders as you swim.  You want to keep the "whole" you push through as small as you can.  If you kick outside this area you are causing more drag and fighting more dense, dense water.  Try to be an arrow, not a sail.

Looking forward to trying some of these swimming drills in the next month.  I'm getting swim lessons from my husbands cousin this weekend.  Hoping to have a more complete training schedule once I learn some swimming technique.

BTW. Mntbiker21 - I registered for the Hawk Island Sprint Tri June 4th in Lansing, MI.

I worry that I won't be able to run the 5k. I have a lot of lbs to drop before I can even think of running. Can I walk it? Sure. But I don't wanna! I know I have to keep showing up at the gym, and this site / group has really been instrumental in getting me there when I really don't want to go. Bottom line for me is going to be the diet. I've decided to try the military 3 hour diet. Basically you eat only enough to get you through to your next meal, which is in 3 hours, so multiple small meals per day. You can see it here if anyone is interested. http://www.military.com/military-fitness/nutrition/three-hour-diet
