Someone once said,"Find an occupation that you love to do, and you will never have to work a day in your life." You sound like you are in a great situation to take a chance and try it. You have the talent, you have an education and other skills to fall back on/ support you if things get rocky, and you have someone there who will support you as you chase the dream. Why not. I was never talented enough to dare to try, but if I was in your situation I'd give it a shot. Even if it doesn't pan out, you meet alot of people at the bigger races and who knows what kind of opportunities can spring from a even a brief professional career.

The work ethic, drive determination, inginuity, and desire, etc it takes to become a pro triathlete, transitions very well into just about any path you chose later in life and having Professional Triathlete on your resume, would give you an unusual edge on many folks. I think this is especially true in a sport like triathlon which has Ironman CEO challenges and the like.

A friend of mine raced 1 season as a pro back in the 1980's and even won enough cash to cover his expenses. The picture he has on the podum with Scotty Tinley and Mike Pigg on is desk at work earns him a great deal of respect from triathletes and non triathletes alike. But he often tells me, the experience taught him so many lessons that paid off later in life that he would do it again in a heartbeat.

Good luck
