I am now rushing to leave work so I haven't even figured out my line, but hopefully you're still all out there... To be honest, I stopped keeping track of my numbers the past few weeks. Thinking I was the only one left in the challenge kind of took all the fun out of it. ;-( And I'm not off to a great start this week - called in sick to work today, have been fighting a head cold/ear ache for a few days, scared to go to the pool. BUT I'm ready to start again next week - go hard or go home! tr |

Crazy schedules and time commitments have been my excuses for not sticking to any type of plan lately. Sorry to go mia all of a sudden. I'm back now though. My first sprint tri is in a little over a month and it's time to get in gear. I don't know if I can jump into my plan where I left off though since it got a lot harder since I got lazy. We'll see how it goes this week. Here's the plan: just so I have it in writing :-) mon- bike 42 tues-swim 21 & run 21 wed-swim 28 & bike 56 thurs-swim 30 & run 28 fri-swim 35, bike 1hr 10m sat- off sun-run 35 plus 10m ab/core a night |

Veteran 242 Reading, Berkshire (UK) | Subject: RE: Stick to the Plan Challenge (thru June) I've been thinking a lot about this challenge because it's driving me nuts about how difficult it is. Part of the problem, I think, is that I/we set ourselves too high targets; and this is made worse when I assume that everyone else is at 100% so as soon as I miss one workout, I give up. And having taken 2 weeks off for vacation, I've had to rearrange my plan because I couldn't just pick up where I dropped off. Here's my suggestion as to how we can revise the challenge to make it a bit more manageable. 1. We all need to commit to post plans on Monday and results by Sunday. 2. At the end of each week, we calculate our % and then update our signatures accordingly to include the applicable line (in addition to whatever existing signature you've already got):
Or whatever you suggest -- just to get us (me!) away from the idea that <100% = failure! 3. Inspire whenever you can -- it always helps! Thoughts?? |

I'm putting so much pressure on myself to stick to this very intense training plan - then get disappointed and upset with myself if I miss a training session. And with everything else going on in my life (work full-time, go to school full-time, single with a house and dog, starting a business, etc) ... it's an unreasonable expectation of myself. So ... what I've comforted myself in the past with is: it's not the one workout that I missed - it's the 7 that I DID do ... that's 7 more than most people! I'm not off to a good start though this week - missed both training sessions yesterday. See my logs for the sad sorry details. I must be PMSing or something. tr |

Finally got back on my bike this weekend (as opposed to using the turbo trainer) and realised just how much harder "real" cycling is. But all in all a great week!! |

I took what was supposed to be a recovery week and used that as an excuse to have an "easy" week ... read: lazy. ;-( Got lots done in the garden, though. I have, however, modified my training plan to make it less stressful for the next six weeks, leading up to my first tri of the season. AND - it looks like my team for the race I was to do in June (my half-mary) is not going to come together .. I'm disappointed it won't happen as it would have been a VERY cool run, but it gives me that much more time to focus on swimming and cycling. This upcoming week: Mon - yoga, short bike ride Tues - hill repeats, swim Wed - run Thurs - bike/run brick Fri - swim, bike ride Sat - run Sun - off day |

I think I went to the pool once maybe twice and ran 3 or 4 times. Nothing on the bike... So I definitely bombed last week. Trying it again this week with more realistic goals. I seem to always set my goals too high and then feel overwhelmed and think well if I can't do what was planned then what's the point of doing it at all. Which is dumb :-) Lets see if I can be a little more positive this week! Monday: run 3 miles Tuesday: run 3 miles Wednesday: pool 30min bike 10 miles Thursday: bike 10 miles run 3 miles Friday: pool 30 min Saturday: off Sunday: run 3 miles 200 crunches 3x Congrats gilly, on the win last week. Which is dumb :-) I am exactly the same -- but I've scaled back my plan because trying to achieve it was having a negative effect on my overall life balance (and annoying my DH!). And since doing that, I've discovered that I'm more likely to stick to the plan because I haven't got any "contingency" sessions. For example, I always go swimming on Monday because that's now the only day I go and so I don't put it off thinking "I can go on Wednesday instead". Hope everyone's week is working out well! |

I feel terrible for pulling out, and for leaving an empty spot on the relay team - but I feel SO MUCH BETTER without having all that training hanging over my head! Now I can concentrate on having a strong triathlon - not just a strong run. ;-) So hopefully I'll find sticking to my training plan a lot easier, now. |

Master 1420 Victoria, BC | Subject: RE: Stick to the Plan Challenge (thru June) Well - I know it's only Saturday but my week sucked. It started on Monday when my doctor called - she wanted to talk to me about my biopsy results. Oh, so no good can come from this. Of course with my work schedule I couldn't get in for a few days (and was probably subconsiously putting it off) ... well long story short - the good news: "I" don't have cancer ... the bad news: I have a "growth" that does - so a fairly easy day surgery should take care of it. Time and place yet to be determined. I have been going through this for a few years now, this will be my second surgery and quite frankly I'm exhausted. I know it's not really a big deal in the grand scheme of things, and once I wrap my head around it (again) I'll be just fine, but it was enough to top off my stress level and put me in a funk all week. And I'm terrified I'm going to lose my entire triathlon season ... the last surgery I had was a few years ago and I lost 8 weeks due to the recovery period ... where in my life do I have time to lose 8 weeks? So ... I've been eating a lot and not working out. You all kicked my butt in this challenge, I'm sure. ;-) I'm volunteering tomorrow at a local triathlon (in the snow!) and hopefully that will motivate me enough to get my butt back training. Also - knowing the healthier I am going into surgery the quicker I'll recover. Yup ... next week I'm back on track! Only 5 weeks till my first tri this season, and I really don't want to make a fool of myself. lol. |

I know you can get through this, and a bit of chocolate never hurt I feel a bit bad going on to say I've had a great week. For the first time (this year, I think), I actually did all of my training -- and it was a full week not a scaled-down recovery week or travelling week. Not knowing that you were having a bad week, I imagined you chasing me down at every session and didn't dare miss one. So if nothing else, you've kept me going this week. NO motivation this week ... but surprisingly - I feel ok about it. I allowed myself this week to slack off - I've realized that I can't get everything done every day. It's a combination of things - being on holidays this week, REALLY crappy weather, and a planned rest/recovery week ... somehow I translated this into the excuse of blowing off workouts. So I'm not even going to tell you how poorly I did this week. And I'm letting myself get preoccupied with this whole quitting-my-job/starting-my-own-business business, even though I know that training and working out will make it seem less stressful overall. Oh - life. ;-) I did get lots of non-triathlon stuff done though - mostly caught up on school work and made a huge dent in the mess that is my yard. I had a mentor once that taught me to translate that motivation and dedication into mental training - triathlon is largely a mental sport, after all. Starting tomorrow though I am back to work and back in the saddle! My first tri of the season is a mere 4 weeks away (!!!!) and I MUST be properly prepared. It's a sprint, so I'm not too worried - I have a good base and if the weather cooperates from now on and lets me get outside and train more, I'll be just fine. ;-) How'd you all do? And Gilly - I'm chasing you down starting ... NOW! |

I didn't have too bad a week, despite needing to fit in a work off-site and a heinous hangover into my plan. (ok, so the hangover wasn't at all planned...) I've managed 6 out of 7 training sessions (just dropped the short bike) and 2 out of 3 core sessions (need to concentrate on this more next week). I'm starting to feel the benefit of the cumulative training (3 weeks at 85% of my plan or higher) and am hovering at the stage where I'm starting to want to improve my diet to maximise my training (running while dehydrated is not fun!). Three weeks to go to my first race!! |

I missed my swim (training was cancelled because of the bank holiday), one bike ride, and two runs. So I only managed 2 out of 6 or 33% I did get my brick in (which wiped me out for the rest of the weekend) and I did make an open water swim session (but as it was only 10 minutes, I don't think it counts!) First race next weekend... gulp! |
