Terps421 - 2009-01-09 9:10 PM I did the LT test!  Wow, that was hard and it was not fun.  But.. I got my LT so I am glad.  I do not want to do that any time soon!

Can someone give me the elevator pitch on this whole LT thing - what is it, what's it good for, etc??

I'm just now (finally) watching my HR while on the trainer, but never have on the run.

If you look at a lot of the HR based training plans they talk of 5 different HR zones.  Your LT is used to construct those zones.  I will look for the link to the article that describes the different zones and post it later.

Good Saturday everyone!  What do you have on tap this weekend?

I joined the local YMCA this morning.  I'd been in between gyms after my membership ran out at the old place in September.  With the new job, it was hard for me to want to pay for a membership somewhere when I knew I'd be gone so much.  Alas....the YMCA's have a program called A.W.A.Y...always welcome at YMCA's.  It means that I can go to just about any YMCA across the country and I can use the facility for little or no cost.

So....I got my swim in this morning.  I have my work holiday party tonight.  And I'm looking to get a run in tomorrow morning (probably on the dreadmill since we've got about 6 inches of new snow on the ground....with it still coming down!

Can anyone tell me how to clear the info stored on my Garmin 50 History?  I feel like it may not be saving anymore data.

gcoller - 2009-01-10 9:45 PM Can anyone tell me how to clear the info stored on my Garmin 50 History?  I feel like it may not be saving anymore data.

From the manual:

1. On the History page, press + or - to scroll through your saved runs to select the run you want to delete

Press and hold the lap/reset button to delete a single run. Continue to hold lap/reset to delete all runs.

The page before indicates that the unit up to 100 laps or 7 hours, and will give a Lo MEM indicator when there is an hour left.  It will stop recording when all full and will display Full MEM.

Quick question guys....How long does it take for someone to get prepared for a Sprint Triathlon when it comes to the swimming portion?  I am so frustrated with the gyms around here.  The one gym that I was willing to join will not work with me on competitive pricing - meaning that they will not match the deal that my recent gym is willing to give me.  I love the gym that I have been going to, but they do not have a pool.  I am thinking of rejoining Golds and then joining the Y for two months before the triathlon.   On a side note, the Y here is much more expensive than the deal that Golds will give me and the only thing that I like about the y is the pool.  What are your thoughts.  Can I be prepared if I focus on swimming for two months before the tri?

How is your swimming now?  And how long is the swim leg in the tri you are looking to do thsi summer?

I'm going to suggest finding a gym/club with a pool.  Eight weeks of swimming prior to your triathlon might be enough to finish.  Do you have a swim background?  If your answer is "no" or "minimal" then I think you need more than 8 weeks.  Also, is the sprint tri in open water?  My opinion is that you want to have even more confidence in your swimming if your first event is open water.  I have always been very comfortable in the water but open water swims are completely different.   I am positive that you can do it, but I would not want you to try to minimalize the amount of work that the prep for the swim portion will take.

How much more is the Y than Golds?  Perhaps the benefit of having a pool is worth the difference?  Have you checked with any of the high schools in the area?  Perhaps they have pool hours or passes available to the public?

I feel your frustration about the lack of pool availability.  I too belong to Gold's gym which I love.  The Y is 3 times more expensive and the only good thing about it is the pool.  I will join a pool in the summer so I can train for 3 months for actual Tri's and do Duathlons in spring and fall.  I will not have much time for swim training but it is the best I can do.  I too hope that I will be prepared.

Let's see....swimming background.  I know how to swim that's about it....ages ago, I was a lifeguard.  I know that my stroke technique needs work.  The Tri that I want to do is a 500 meter swim indoors.  That's for my first tri.

You may be able to make it work.  It will be tough but given it is indoors and 500M I say give the 8 week swim prep a try.

The first (and only) tri I did last year had a 400m indoor swim and I only got maybe 10 swim workouts in (if that) before the race.  The swim portion of the event actually caught me by surprise, somewhat (in regards to everyone swimming all over each other in the pool).  I think most of that was due to it being my first ever tri, but I wish I had spent more time on the swim.  My options were also too limited, until I discovered the pool at Ft. Knox.

I just wanted to give everyone an update on my pool situation.  Happily, yesterday I found out that there are a few high schools with indoor pools here.  The local parks and rec department takes them over at 5pm and allows open and lap swimming there.  It's only $2 a session.  I think that is the way that I will go, and therefore can go more often or longer  than the two months that I was planning.

Thank you for the Garmin tips, Jeff!  Also, that's great news, Christy   I've only done an aquathlon, which was 500 indoors plus a 5K on a treadmill...this was a few months ago.  I was a swimmer in high school and I was happy with my swim time (8:39).  I used the Triathlon Magazine's training schedule in terms of pool usage for about 6 weeks and that was enough for that event (but it was quite a bit easier than a full sprint triathlon).  The swim and the nerves had a surprising effect on my run after.  So I feel like I could have used more time in the pool if only just for endurance reasons.

You can't beat $2 per session.  Good job finding a pool - now it's time to swim!

How is everyone doing?  Are there set plans that you are following or are sort of making it up as you go along?  Or aleternatively, are you planning on starting a plan as you get in range of your planned races?

I am following the winter maintenance plan with a half marathon plan substituted for the running in the maintenance plan.  I haven't been a diligent as I could be regarding the run workouts and hope to get that corrected very soon as the 1st half marathon of this season I am planning on completing is on April 5th.  When I completed my 1st ever half last year I trained running throughout my tri season that ended in early Sept.  I then shifted to a run only schedule from then until October 19th.  It will be interesting to see how this race prep goes as I will be trying to maintain and build on my swimming and biking while doing the same for running.

I started with the couch potato to 5 k program, but was a little experienced so started about a 1/4 into the program.  However, haven't been following it like I should.  I need to regroup and get back with the program.  At this point, I need to retrain my body.  I am not naturally a runner.  And truthfully, I don't really like to run, so I have to make myself train.  I can run a mile and then walk for about 5 minutes, run and then walk and so on.  I can do three miles that way.  Could probably do more, but haven't tried yet.  Also, doing biking, running bricks right now, but only in the gym as I have difficulties working outside in the winter months.

Christy,

My mother lives in Pinehurst and has told me its been uncharacteristically cold there this week.  However, my high temp today is a whopping 10 degrees...so I don't feel too bad for you (LOL!!!).

I used to be like you and hated running.  I think it's a discipline that you have to really keep at and slowly increase your distance...eventually, I would argue, it becomes addictive.  When I started I could run three miles and afterwards be completely spent.  I think the hard part is getting your muscles, tendons and joints conditioned to the pounding.  Once that happens I think it gets a lot easier.

Take your time and pay attention to your body.  I bet 6 months from now you'll be surprised how much easier it is!

Over the past year, I've created my own training plan loosely based on the Sprint 3x balanced program.  I modify it weekley as I progress.

Right now...I'm focusing more on swimming and running.  I'll add in the bike once I've fully created a HABIT of rising early in the AM.  I love swimming, so it's easy for me to get up early to go to the pool.   Another week or two and waking up early will be a habit...and I'll modify my routine to include the stationary bike.  I also include strength training.  I need to start working on my core though...

I, too, dislike running.  I hate the dreadmill.  I don't mind the cold, but I need to invest in some yak trax.  And when I'm on the road, I don't always feel that comfortable running early or late (when it's dark) in areas I'm not familiar with...so I'm stuck with the treadmill.

Hey, that's a phenomenal time.  At one of my Sprints I ran last year that time is good enough for 2nd overall for women and 12th overall for both men and women.  Great time and glad I made your day!

I know that it's incredibly COLD up in the northern area right now.  It's supposed to get down to 14 here in NC.  Almost unheard of.

As far as me working out in the cold, unfortunately, I have something going on with my ears that actually inhibit me from doing so.  When I get warmed up and heated up, my ears start hurting very badly about 20 minutes into a cold workout - especially if it's windy.  I've tried the hats and headbands.  Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't, so I generally stick to the indoors during the winter months.
