Are you able to take your boys to the gym with you?  If so, I would hit the treamill/spin/ and swim twice a week for now if you can.  Really work on getting there everyday to get something in.  You should at least two sessions a week to keep some fitness up.  Once the weather gets a little better, you can work on increasing the frequency to three times a week if possible.  I would strongly suggest that you get in all three each week and not focus on one sport.  "Triathlon" is one sport, and you should get as fit as you can in it by placing specific demands on your body so it adapts.

 Hope that helps.

Is anyone else battling a slump (already)?  A knee injury has sidelined me from the run ( I really think I don't know how to run on a tread Foot in mouth) and the IRS decided that I am not getting the bike I dreamed of this year.  Quick, someone throw me an inspirational quote...I need some motivation!

I have a question about training plans. It seems like most of them want you to do two sports at once, both for a short time. But that's not really practical for me. I can't swim for 10 min and bike for 20 if my pool is one town and my gym in another. Plus I have my group coached workouts three days a week. They've really upped my game, so I don't want to give them up.

I did find a training plan that had you do one sport per day except for one day a week when you do a brick, but it starts out with 20-30 min. and I'm already doing 45-60 min. so that just feels like a step backwards. Plus it's not very specific about what you do on those days.

I'm having the same trouble with finding a good training plan.  The one i have is couch to sprint and i already know i can swim 1/2 mile, bike 10 and run a 5k. Also it requires some sort of workout 6 days each week which isn't all that practical for me.  But between now and august i have to be able to increase my endurance to put them all together.  Like macmadame i can't get to the pool as much as i can run and bike.  I need to put together a plan that will keep me challenged between now and then, but also not be too demanding timewise.  I'm able to run/bike most days and can swim on the weekends.  But because of life demands there are usually a couple days each week where i can't workout.

Any suggestions??  Thanks!

Lisa

Hey everyone, I got this link from another site I'm on.... Buy.com is selling the Reebok HRM that is normally 100+ for about $30. I just ordered one!

Oh and if people are interested in the details of my first Open Water Swim, go to my blog. (Link in signature.) It was a blast! But scary. I'm so glad I did this before my first triathlon because I learned a lot.

Thanks for the tip! (And I am already a big fan of your blog) Congrats on your first water swim.  They really get easier and you are so right, can you imagine not doing one until your first tri when everyone is on top of you?  I was really surprised at the difference between my peaceful, open water practices on summer evenings and the complete mayhem, every man for himself swim of the tri.  But can't wait to do it again!

Our "New to the Sport" group is talking about organizing one every week. The official NTTS workout has one every 5 weeks but I need to do it again and my tri is in 4 weeks.

Ran my first 5K! I finished in 36'21" which is faster than I am in the gym. I think I could have done it faster but my pants were falling down in the beginning. That put me at 25 out of 75 in my age group.

Here's my race report:

It was awesome. There was a point where I had to talk myself into continuing to run and not walking though. But then I got my second wind and I just kept going to the end.

I'm going to do a 4 mi. run on 4/5 as a final prep for my first tri on 4/19.

I need to figure out how to get one more OWS in there too. Then I think I'll be ready.

So I got a HRM and I've been wearing it during selected exercise just to see how many calories I am burning. So far, I'm burning a lot less than the machines say I am. Is that normal? Because I thought the machines were kind of low based on what other people were reporting for similar exercise.
