Oh wow.  This started up fast.  I've been fighting the start of a cold this week and have been going to sleep right when I get off the bike from work.

I remember when I was very young and in Basic Training, the sick feeling would go away after some excercise.  I've been counting on that.  Monday, the new plan had me scheduled to swim 2k.  Heck, I got to 800 and the two week lazy vacation spell had my shoulder and I wiped out.  Maybe the cold affected it too.

Well, I will be restarting this plan again (this week is a write off), but I may be able to get 100 miles on the bike.

Two questions for ye triathlon journeymen:

Is it allowed to wear a soft lace up ankle brace while racing?

And while my ankle has been recovering, I have been running on it as much as I could stand; but in the last few weeks, I've not run at all and it is feeling much better.  I've done all the xrays and such.   Does it make sense that I trade some running for more bike?

I envy y'all with the tri bikes.  My trusty steed is a trek hybrid witha rack and fenders (and soon studded tires, I think).  It gets me around.

Have a great training day,

Wade

I can't say whether biking more would help (probably would with overall fitness but not run specific).  But I can definately say you should consider taking a break from running if your ankle is bothering you.  I hurt my foot in the fall and tried to run on it.  I decided it would be better to take time off to heal faster (and risk needing to get back in shape) instead of doing shorter runs and dragging it out longer.

Why wouldn't it be?  I can't think of a reason why not.

What was your ankle diagnosis again?  Then I'll say is or no?

I totally understand. I am currently riding a diamondback that I purchased at Sport Chalet for about $200 almost 5 years ago. I think it ways 80pounds and needs to be serviced desperately.

Years ago, I had a Cannondale Road bike. I remember how well it road and how light it was. I sold it when I was in college and my ex-wife convinced me I didn't need it anymore....

I am paying attention to the discussions I read about bikes and accessories and am taking notes on what works well and what doesn't.

My goal is to get myself a tri-bike when I loose 100 pounds.

I appreciate all of your discussions and find myself looking thing up when I don't know what they are.

Have a great day training.

Great goal.  I lost 75 pounds since the first week in July 09 so giving yourself a gift after 100 pound loss is great and something to work toward.  Good luck

I'll try but we're supposed to get 10-20 inches of snow tonight so that might have an impact on me getting my long run in this weekend!

The ankle diagnosis was an overuse injury (moving 5 uhauls from Portland to Medford Or) 1 year ago compounded upon post traumatic arthritis from 25 years ago when I shoved the kickstand of my motorcycle through the center of my foot in a rather violent and near fatal collision (and a seperate foot inversion injury from the military).  They found some bone spurs but they weren't causing the major pain.  Up to about 3 weeks ago, the pain was caused by twisting of the ankle.  Now that's mostly gone, but after 1 - 1.5 miles or so the inside of the ankle feels kind of ouchy.  I suspect some of that is me noticing the bone spurs a bit.

I think that if I lose another 40 pounds, I'm likely to have a better time with it.  Riding the bike more instead was more about about burning extra calories.  The ankle has no trouble on the bike doing upwards of 40 miles at a stretch, but has requested a new bike (maybe my wife will let me get a bike if my ankle needs it).

Oh, and I'm bike commuting tonight again.  When I get home in the morning, I'll have 1,000 miles on the bike since I got it in mid-September.  Now that it's going to be broken in, I can really give it the gas, right?

Brian,

We were in the tourist part of Orlando a couple weeks ago.  The best part was Skyventure indoor skydiving.  You ought to try it.  Vertical wind tunnel.

It really takes me back to my windy youth.  I used to jump alot; in fact, it is the method I used to find a wife and break my back twice.  ...Among other festivities.  They just need to pump in the burned jet fuel smell.

OK. I just took the parachute like child seat off the back of my bike and I am off for a ride and then to run.

Good training everyone.

I just finished a 6 mi bike ride and then tried to run a mile right afterward and at about 1/2 mile felt my right calf beginning to cramp up. How do you deal with cramping of your muscles while training and in races?

I had the same problem during my first Tri in in March of this year.  I was told to turn around and jog backwards for a short distance to change the impact on your muscles.  It worked great.  The change in range of motion really helped.  I had to do it several times (problem was from not running enough in prep for my 1st Tri).    Scott

General fitness issue.  Run more.  Ride more.  As your musculature builds you will stop getting those type of cramps.

Good run this morning.  It was chilly and windy in Orlando.  Great negative split run with the cool temps.  Proud I did the last 3 miles in under 9 minutes.  Could have done one more mile but I plan on biking this afternoon after I get off work.  Take the new bike for a spin for the first time.

Eagleone - 2009-12-18 8:06 PM I see you lost 75lbs since July - how much of that is tied to diet?  Scott

It was a mix of diet and working out.  Like many on here I was a former athlete  in my younger days.   I have been in and out of the triathlete game several times.  I had a bike etc just waiting to be ridden. My weight on July 1st  was at 250 and now is around 175.   I tracked my calories on Fit Day every day and began running and biking.  I started out walking and running combined and tried to gradually build distance and total time.  I alternated running with biking and took one day off per week. My bike avg was about 14 MPH and my run pace was 13 mins a mile when I was finally able to run for a consistent 2 miles I also started with the same thought process on training someone in shape is in and that was I had one long run/walk and one long ride per week.  In the beginning these long runs and rides were not very far but compared to my time the ratio worked out about the same as what I do now.  I signed up for my first 5K  in August in Charlotte, NC.  I think signing up for a event is good motivation to keep you moving toward your goal.  I have since starting back completed - 2 5K's, 2 10 Milers, 1 Half Marathon, and 60 mile ride, 1 100 mile century.

I have had no injury issues.  I think I have done a good job of progressing.   I am taking it slow and not setting crazy goals for a guy in his 50's.  I am signed up for, 2nd Half Marathon in Miami in January,  2 Olympic distances tris in March and April, a HIM in May and maybe a IM in October.  Not sure of the IM yet may be next year but I want to do one.

I am very proud as you can tell of my accomplishments and love to see other people overcome their own obsticles to reach their fitness goals.  I thank my yougest daughter who is a senior at NC State when she came to home at the end of June this year and said "Dad you use to be in such great shape and I want you to get back I going running now you want to come?  I said yes and haven't looked back since!

Sounds great.  Since moving here 3 years ago I have had more company than any other place we have lived.  I went to school at LSU and they are coming here for the Capitol One Bowl and we have several people coming to stay with us and going to the game.  Orlando is a nice place to live and lots to do.  If you or any others are planning a trip here let me know.  I know BamaDC is doing the same Disney 70.3 race in May that I am so I am looking foward to meeting him.

Absolutely Awesome Story and Congratulations!  I too made the steady climb to 250lbs and am now down to 241.  I am 6'4" and my goal is to reach 205-10 this year and complete my first 1/2 IM in the fall.

I am so motivated to exercise and eat healthy seeing the stories of the people who have over come so much to be healthy.

Good luck on the races and keep being fit.

I'm jealous.  There's no way I'm going to get out for a run today unless I find some snow shoes.  Hopefully they'll get the main roads plowed by tomorrow so I can get out and run.  :-(

I'm 6'1" and got over 240 this summer before I started running regularly.  Being a big guy who used to work out a lot (ie lift weights) I was used to being heavier.  Each time my weight would creep up I'd say I needed to loose weight but friends and family would say, "you're a big guy, you never were lanky, you carry the weight well".  They were just trying to be polite but frankly, I wish they would have told me, "yes, you've really let yourself go.  Instead of getting seconds you should get your butt off the couch!"

Once I started running regularly I lost weight without really trying.  I'm definitely eating a lot better but I didn't change my diet to loose weight.  I just found that with all the running I was doing my body was rebelling against crappy food.  Instead of pizza and take out I was craving fresh food and lighter meals.  This got me down to 210 and I've kind of plateaued there.  I'd really like to get down below 200 and think that 190 is reason but I'll have to make a conscious effort to do so.  If I can can get there by my marathon at the end of march I'll be very happy.

I'm using the marathon as my goal because not carrying 20 extra pound for 26 miles is highly motivating to me.  I think your 205-210 goal for the fall seems do-able.

I just got back from my first ride with my new Felt B12 tri bike.  Man it was windy and cool for Florida. (Just so you all know I am not complaining because I read the post about having wear snow shoes to run today).  I told the guy I rode with this morning that we better not complain about the wind because the sun was shining and it was 58 degrees and many people who don't lived in Florida would trade the snow for wind and 58.  Anyway the bike was great. I didn't really push it because of the wind and the guy I was with had been sick and wasn't up to pushing the pace.  My digital camera is on the blink. I got my wife one for Christmas and will have to post a picture when I get back after Christmas.  Sunday I am going to take it out and get in 60 miles on the 70.3 Disney HIM course.

Maryland, about a half hour west of Baltimore.  We've got about 16 inches on the ground and it's still snowing.  It's not really a lot of snow for some places but we normally only get a few inches at a time.

Great story Brian.  That really gets me off the couch (after I'm done with the laptop, here) (laughing).

I rode the bike to work last night, the long way.  It adds another 5 miles (13.25), but in a dark corner on the bike path I made a turn on some slippery coat of mud that had formed on after the week of rain.  I heard the tires scrubbing but didn't unclip fast enough.  My hip broke my fall.  I proudly wore some rash under my FedEx uniform last night as the scabs healed me to my clothes.

My wife picked me up with the Subaru and got me back home for a quick de-mudding shower and off to work in the Eos with the top down.  I wasn't even late for work.  The broken rack was a perfect excuse to install the hotstuff rack I'd already bought.  No real downside, save for the mileage I missed.   I will use the pain as a reminder.

I'm living my life with tired muscles, an honest smile and wonderful family.  Luck and God must be on my side.

Sorry to hear about the snow in MD, Drew.  (weird, but Drew is my brother's name).

Good weekend to all (I'm going for a ride before dawn tomorrow.
