How has everyone been doing?  I had a good run yesterday, but my knee has been bugging me for a week  I need to make sure and give it some time to heal up. . ice ice ice.

Evan - i have heard about those shoes. . a lot of people are into the barefoot running thing.  make sure to start short with them - like 1-2 miles and build up (since they will be different on your muscles

Tim, I get what you mean about swimming afterrunning. I usually like to swim while fresh. I feel like I'm made out of lead if I even swim the day after running!!

Merry Christmas all!
I have indeed been resting for 5 days and eating ALOT. I can't wait to see the scale. Got a trainer so no more lonely boring mornings on the spin bike at the y.
The groin is improving. Though I'm not going running until I feel it's 100%. Will probably try out the trainer for a little while tom. morn. Am going to lower my seat 0.25" to make sure the groin is ok. Then swim tues morn and poss. weights.

You guys sound like you're staying in great form with the cold, holidays, etc. Keep it up

Four and a half good hours of hard snowboarding today on my new board.  It weighs about a third less than the old one and was easy to carve with, so I took it out and went hard.  My legs feel pretty good (must be the squats and leg extensions), so I might try to do a short run tonight on the treadmill.  Tomorrow I go and get my punch card for the pool and will likely get back into that by Tues/Wed.  Just depends on how many more times my son and I get back up the slopes this week.

Goooood day!

ethilo - 2009-12-27 9:02 AM I got some vibram 5-fingers for christmas.  Went for a run in them yesterday, they're fun.  You should all consider getting them, my calves feel worked.

God, I just cringe in pain looking at those things.  After a tibia plateau fx and meniscus tears, I just can't see myself running without some sort of cushion under my feet.  Not to mention, pronation issues.

I'm glad you like them.  Like Mike said, I've heard people swear by them.  Have fun, start easy, and see if it works for you!

Another brick session today.  While I definately need to incorporate more brick sessions into my training, doing back-to-back days was not the smartest thing I've done recently.  My legs started to feel pretty heavy half way through the run.  Cardio was fine, but felt like I really had to work to keep my legs moving.

Question: what is the normal progression for brick sessions?  Long rides and gradually increase run distance?  Short ride and gradually increase distance/long run?  Or, gradually increase both disciplines at the same time?

I did my first 3 hour bike yesterday. Actually it was 2:59 but I'm rounding up. Did a bit over 70k's. Now I have my HR monitor, I realise that my previous "endurance" pace is more like slow recovery pace, and that current endurance is much harder.

I've noticed that some of you guys live in rather cold areas of the world. What is the coldest temperature that you will train outside in? I'm a big wuss, and don't feel like training if it is less than about 20deg C (70F). Let me know how much of a wuss I am.

Stuart - you are a pretty big wuss Training outside is all about having the right clothing to suit the weather. frankly, if i only trained when it was 70F outside or warmer, i would only train maybe 2 months out of the year. I don't really like to bike when its below 40FI think the coldest I have ran in was 7F with a wind chill down to -4F. that was back when i lived in Idaho, though. It very very rarely gets that cold out in the Seattle area.

All right! did about 50 minutes on the trainer this morn. Felt good. Groin ok. Kept hr at about 145 and spin rate about 100. Swim and possibly weights tom.

Any ideas on swim and then weights back to back and then 2 days away from upper body and then swim only on fri? I figure I could recover from both at the same time. Or will the weight work screw up the swim work? I am going to go long and easy tom. Long for me being about 1650 via 500s with 20 sec rest.

Wish I was snowboarding!!
I'm still new to cycling but flirt with the 40F temp alot. Though I'm blowing snot rockets every 5 minutes at this temp!
Running I really don't like to go below 20F. It really messes with my lungs.

Mike - as far as lifting/swimming goes --- i have found a couple of things:

when i lift reguarly, i can lift/swim back to back days and be fine.  if i haven't lifted in a while, my arms/shoulders etc are too sore and it is really hard to swim.  I'd say it is definitly doable, it just depends how hard you lift and how frequently.

also, I think lifting has slowed down my swimming (then again, not consistently swimming has slowed down my swimming).  However, i don't do it to improve my swim, i enjoy lifting and keeping my 'strength.'

Tim -- as far as doing bricks goes:  Some people swear by 'transition runs,' or running after everytime you bike.  I don't.  I don't do bricks until the peak weeks right before races - so i won't do any until probably april/may/june timeframe.  I don't neccessarily like doing bricks, probably because when i was working with a coach, i would sometimes do stuff like 3:30 ride, followed by a 45 min run attempting to go 7:15 pace or so.  they were just too brutal and mentally draining for me (and too much time).
I think there is benefit, but my stance is that long bricks will wear your body out more than the good it will do.  There is definitly benefit to doing a few bricks to get that feel for how the legs wlil feel, but doing 4-5 hr bricks (Half Iron Training, or IM training) can take a lot out of you.  I like doing a long ride one day, and a long run the next, better.

I'm getting used to the cold weather still. Nothing like getting out and doing a 5K when its 15 degrees out and the ground's covered in snow. That helped, plus it was fun.

Think I might have caught the cold that sick, visiting relatives had, so I haven't had a chance to try out my Garmin 305 that I got for Christmas.

I got a couple of hours in on the trainer this afternoon and managed 31 miles while watching the recorded coverage of Kona on DVR.  Next week I really get back after it, but I did get my swim pass taken care of today.  Tomorrow, I snowboard again up at Loveland with my son and a buddy, so maybe a quick run in the morning to get moving....As far as training in the cold, I have ridden my bike in early spring..early in the morning and had ice form on the top of my aero bottle, so it was probably about 29 degrees F.  On the run, as low as 8 degrees in the snow last year.  Now that we have a much better treadmill in the basement, just a little easier to do that than bundle up and head out.

Hey ya'll, I need some clothing advice. I've avoided running outside in the cold since moving to Utah, but it's time I bite the bullet. I'm looking at some different cold weather running gear and wanted some opinions on what you use. I was browsing ebay and found some running tights and compression shirts at a great price, but it's all 80% nylon and 20% spandex. I know cotton is what I need to stay away from, but is the 80% nylon and 20% spandex a good mix? Should I be looking for other materials? Also, any advice on socks? Thanks in advance and hope everyone had a good Monday.

Take my advice with a grain of salt since I live in a tempid climate.  But, I'm a sissy, so I often dress like it is 10-15 degrees!

The good news, I find it alot easier to stay warm running than biking.  When the weather drops under 40, I usually wear compression shorts, compression LS top, running pants, lightweight jacket, and gloves.

As for materials, you should be fine with any Spandex blend that is specific for running-cycling.  However, for your colder weather, you might want to consider a thermal running tight (fleece or Gore-Tex).  Check out some of the running stores online, then shop for your discounts, so you get the right apparel.

CWX makes some good running/compression tights, so does a company called Opedix.  As far as the tops go, UA cold gear works pretty well.  For cycling, I have one pair of Pearl Izumi bibs that work pretty well.  Thorlo makes some pretty good moisture wicking socks that are meant for cold weather too....

Got a good swim in this afternoon.  Coach has me drilling with Zoomers to help with my kick.  I have to admit, these fins work pretty well.  After alternating between drills and free sets, I'm finally starting to feel turbulence-propulsion on my kick in both directions.  Also, put the pull buoy between my ankles today with the intent to eventually move toward tying my ankles together to increase balance.

Hope everyone is doing well.

for socks - i am a huge fan of smartwool socks.  For running, here is how *my* temp/clothing scenario goes:

above 52F - drywick shirt, running shorts
~42-52F - long sleeve shirt (light), running shorts
~35F - 42F - heavier - long sleeve biking jersey, running shorts, gloves, hat
below 35F - same long sleeve jersey, perhaps a long sleeve shirt under, if it is really cold, and pants, gloves, hat

of course, it depends on precipitation too.

I use a smartwool hat, which is great because it is still warm once it gets wet from sweat or rain or whatever.

Weird run today.  HR was all over the board.  HR should not of pushed into Zone 3 those last three miles.  I also had a bizarre spike in HR during my warm up and don't reallt know why.  Possible causes: I ate about an hour before my run (don't usually do) and my son was riding his new mtb along side me.  13 mile run tomorrow.  I hate these back-to-back pace then distance run days.

WU:
Mile 1: 8:14; HR 137; Zone 1
MS (M-Pace):
Mile 2: 7:18; HR 150; Zone 2
Mile 3: 7:17; HR 151; Zone 2
Mile 4: 7:18; HR 153; Zone 2
Mile 5: 7:10; HR 157; Zone 3
Mile 6: 7:11; HR 156; Zone 3
Mile 7: 7:15; HR 156; Zone 3
CD:
Mile 8: 8:12; HR 144; Zone 2

4.  Compete in and finish IMAZ in under 13 hours
5.  put in 6000-9000 yards weekly in the pool during 3-4 weekly training sessions
6.  Complete at least four century rides during the training period for IMAZ
