Please excuse my ignorance but I have a question about my HIM training plan. I'm just not sure of some of the terms and was wondering if you guys could help me out!

Run: 10 minute warm up, then do 20 second strides* before returning to RPE 3 pace. Repeat strides every 5 minute until end of run

I'm not quite sure about the "strides" thing.

Hi Guys,
good luck to all those racing this weekend Cool

Mademille, the bike is my weakest bit.
Last year i was training for a team dualthlon and I was slower than a slow thing !!
I wasnt much better at the end but what helped me was training to a set cadence and changing gears A LOT!.
As your legs get stronger you find that you are using higher gears and by default your speed picks up.
Thats what I'm doing again this year. So far I can maintain 15-16 mph on the flat but the smallest hill (ie a gentle slope! ) or a slight breeze causes me to slow down but its just miles on the road and hills must become my new best friend !!
Hill training will give you more speed/endurance on a the flat bits as well.
At the start of training (now !) I aim to stay  at 80-85 rpm and then plan to aim at 90-95 rpm at race day.
hope that helps ...

Triathlynne, not sure but I think 'Strides' are where you do bursts where you lengthen your stride while maintaining the same cadence thereby increasing speed and making you think about your posture/form ??
I have printed of the HIM beginner plan from this site but have already decended in making it up as I go along !! lol

rest day for me today after 6 days training in a row. 5 of those on the bike.
64 miles this week with a 17 miler planed for the weekend + a 9 mile trail run as I have an offroad half marathon in 2 weeks <yikes>.

be safe Laughing

yep, i think those strides are quick (20sec) bursts that you run (bike) your tt speed. so, stride is slower than sprint, i guess. anyone agree?

just did my tt run this morning. LT is up to 168.

How is everyone doing?

I have been cycling every couple of days but haven't ran since the Duathlon as my right groin muscla and both of my feet hurt.  But after changing my work boots and taking the time off from running my groin is finally feeling better and my feet have pretty much quit hurting.

I have done some fair rides mostly on my trainer as the weather in SW Colorado has been crappy.  Oh I also managed to break my front shifter on my road bike($200) Frownand it is fixed.

Hey Guys! Blackberry check in time...I went to bed at 7 and had to wake up at 10 to go to the bathroom and now I cant get back to sleep...ugh. Haha. Oh well. Hope everyone's'weekend went well! I broke the 2hr mark for the Van half 1:59:31! Yaaaaaa!!! Haha. I def negatively split the race...yaaa...good race strategy, but evidently held a little bit back...tells me I could have gone faster I think. Had some race induced water retention and have been going to the washroom alot over the past 2 days...anti-diuretic hormone fail! (Stress/pain/NSAIDS/etc increase this hormone and cause water retention...) Hence why I am currently up! 5 more days, 2 finals before I move to Victoria for the summer! Yaaaa...and it definately snowed here today...not impressed. Anyways! Have a good one everyone!

Lynne: strides are where you basically spin your legs through at a high rate...I generally do them over 20-30 seconds rather than distance (but the distance should be around the same) i generally think about over exagerrating technique while increasing leg turnover. They work best on a downhill slope because it helps you get used to that sense of just letting your legs go--rather than "bracing" every step. Doing these should have a two fold effect of helping you get the feel of running at a higher cadence for short spurts and help you with your descending skills (again by helping you get the feel). This is what I was told by a runner up here a few years back when I had the same question...hopefully I explained it alright...i had a in person demonstration...haha

Did a brick on Saturday 5 mile run (real slow) and 35 mile bike ride (good pace).  First run in 2 weeks( trying to let my groin strain heal)  so for some reason I was pretty sore Sunday.  Did 35 Miles on the MTB on the trainer today for pace and to get loosened up.

Sorry I was MIA for a few days but it doesn't look like I am the only oneFrown.  Seems Like we are falling apart a bit.

Hope everyone is doing ok.  Keep training and trying everyone.

Hi Guys,
I have been MIA as well, tripped while on a trail run last week. caught my toes on a tree root and down i went !
Thought i was going to face-plant but managed to twist and instead hit my right wrist/elbow/knee.
wrist and elbow are ok , knee has to be kept moving but kneeling down and getting up are not nice experiences !
I guess there is still fluid around the sore bit that doesnt like compression ! lol.

Been out for a slow 4 mile trail run today to see how it felt. seems ok to run on, will try a long bike tomorrow.
However the weather has turned over here and its currently snowing !!
Not happy as I want the temp to rise so i can start some open water swimming. !

Mel, are you now in Vic ?  hope the finals went well.

Keep training everyone :-)

Hi all,

Did 5 miles on an indoor track at the rec center...a lot easier on the joints than the road also as it is flat it lets me run faster and having people around give me a distraction and I can just relax most of the time and run.

Still dealing with a bit of pain in the groin and feet but I think they are starting to come around.  If anyone has any usefull suggestions i would be interested.

How did finals go?

Hello everyone!!!

Dealing with far too many car issues recently.  FAR too many   Seems to be on the mend though.

Did my 1st OWS this past weekend.  I last 30 minutes and managed to swim across the lake (It's not that big).  Water felt ok, but oh goodness was I cold when I got out!  I just bought a cap and booties and those really helped!!!  Going to try a different lake next week.  I do workouts with Luna Chix every Tuesday during the summer and their 1st one was last night.   Lovely evening for it. Nice ride on the trail along the river.  Having chain issues but hoping to have that fixed by the weekend.

Other than that just looking forward to my 1st tri of the season next month.  It's a fun road trip my friend and I have done for the past 3 years in a row.

I'm going to try and get an OWS in sometime soon! My wetsuit came yesterday with my parents because they had to bring my other suitcase with them!!
