Veteran 149 | Subject: RE: Lumber Dad's Mentor Group - Open Zombie - 2010-12-30 6:47 PM Big accomplishment today for me today. I have not smoked for 1 year(quit cold turkey). Just had to share. Since I have made it a year now, I want to give up soda, and maybe caffeine (debating this one). Later Zombie/Ian Ian I understand the soda thing. I have kicked everything bad ie... chocolate, booze, sex, tobacco, fast food but Dr Pepper is my nemesis. Ok may be I didnt entirely kick the the sex thing LOL At one time I would drink any where from 6 to 10 sodas a day. |

Can you take another one? It is a little intimidating reading about all the races and accomplishments--mine is a short list......but I need a large group and I need experience. I am truly green--a couple of 5K and 10K's under my belt and that is it. Looking to run my 1st TRI in mid-October 2011. One of your threads said--ask a lot of questions. If you don't really mean this, better tell me you are full! Teri Still open. Welcome to the group Teri. We want to help everyone and I am sure everyone will welcome you, you don't have to be training for and Ironman so don't be intimidated. So tell us more about yourself. |

Been a runner for the past 3 years but always wanted to do tri's. Finally decided to take the plunge in 2011 and planning on doing 2 races. Sprint distance in June and Olympic distance in Sept. I want to progressively do longer distances from year to year to do my first HIM in 2012 and my first IM in 2013. Thanks, Sozzie Hi Sozzie, Welcome to the group. Looking forward to helping you through your first year in becoming a triathlete. |

Extreme Veteran 1329 Wausau WI | Subject: RE: Lumber Dad's Mentor Group - Open rmwardjr - 2010-12-30 7:38 PM Hi I would love to join your mentor group. Alittle about myself, I'm 47 and getting back into tri's this year. I have been training now for the past 2 months and starting to feel good again. In the past ( well its been almost 8 years ) I have 5 IM distance races under my belt, 3 marathons, 2 ultra marathons and many long bike rides but all this seemed another lifetime ago. I do have some very lofty goals for this year and 1 of them is to finish the Great Floridian Triathlon next october for my 6th IM distance race. I think a mentor group will definitly help me with my plans and hopefully I can pass on any tips I may have , which is probably not many. Please let me know if there is still room and what I have to do next Thanks Rich Ward Welcome to the group Rick. You would be a great addition, looks like your have more experiance that I do. Ultra marathons is what I am trying to get into this year. Let us know where we can help you. |

Some of the 1/2 IM and marathon training days at the end are kind of scary! Put a new battery in my HR monitor yesterday. I'm ready to go. Bring on the new year! |

Regular 119 | Subject: RE: Lumber Dad's Mentor Group - Open Ian, Awesome job kicking the habit cold turkey. I have not smoked, but watched both my parents go from 2 packs a day to nothing, cold turkey. Hard thing to do. I am also trying to kick the soda habit, although I just drink caffeine free diet coke right now, but it still would not hurt to stop that either. |

Subject: RE: Lumber Dad's Mentor Group - Open Diet Mt. Dew is my caffeine of choice. 2-6 a day. Had my last one with supper. Water and maybe some coffee or tea to take the edge off. Quiting the smoking I thought was easy, this time (2 tries before). After 2 days my son (now 7) said he was proud of me for quitting, and i never had another craving after that. |

Member 68 | Subject: RE: Lumber Dad's Mentor Group - Open Name: sozzie/Shawn Status: 32 years old, married to a very supportive, loving and beautiful wife. I work for a hospital as an systems analyst. Most of my work day is spend sitting staring at 2 monitors and typing. Story: I was a baseball player for most of my youth/teen years. Started off at the age of 3 and played till I was 18. Was on the highschool basketball team and ran 100m dash for the track team. Had to stop everything when I suffered a knee injury while snowboarding in winter of 96/97. After that I didn't do much when it came to sports. I decided to take up clubbing/drinking instead but I kept the athlete diet so I gained quite a bit of weight. I started running in Jan of 2009 after feeling lazy and alone because my wife had started her running in summer of 08 and because she was always training, I was always left alone at home. We've been running together ever since. 2009 Achievements: Ran 3 half marathons over the summer and achieving a PB every race. Ottawa Race Weekend - May 09 - 2:25:30 Chocolate Half Marathon - Aug 09 - 2:11:35 Army Run - Sept 09 - 2:08:38 2010 Achievements: Wasn't able to do much over the summer of 2010 since I suffered a stress fracture from running on ice while training for the Around the Bay 30k Road Race. 2011 Goals: I would like to slim down from 196.4lbs (as of this morning) to about 175lbs before September. I want to become a better athlete and I want to be proud of the work I've done to become that better athlete. And most of all, I want to be able to say "I'm a tri-athlete". 2011 Plan: -Swim: I've registered and have already started training with a local triathlon swim team/class. We're training indoors for winter and we start open water swims in May. Once the pool opens in 3 weeks at my gym I'll be adding another swim training during the week. -Bike: For winter I'm mainly be doing 2 spin classes a week since I don't have a trainer at home but I'm working on getting one. -Run: Started running again at the end of September after my foot injury had healed. I usually do longer runs on Sunday. (12k+) Note: My swim class is Saturday mornings and I will usually register for a spin class right after to get used to the longer training sessions before the summer. During summer, one of the local high-tech companies blocks off over 50k of parkways in Ottawa/Gatineau for runners/cyclists on Sunday. I'll then be doing a bike/run combo on that day. 2011 Races: -Ottawa River Triathlon - Sprint Distance (06/11/2011) -The Canadian - Olympic Distance (09/03/2011) -Army Run (09/18/2011) 2012 Races: -Ironman 70.3 Mooseman - Half Ironman (Early June 2012) -Ironman 70.3 Muskoka - Half Ironman (Late Sept 2012) 2013 Races: -Graham Beasley - Half Iron (Early July 2012) -Ironman Louisville - Ironman (Late August 2013) Mentor Group Goals: I am hoping for accountability, support, encouragement, advice, good jokes and new friends from Lumber Dad's Mentor Group. I will be updating my training log weekly so please check up on me to make sure I've not fallen off the wagon and I will do the same. Edited by sozzie 2010-12-31 1:18 PM |

Member 68 | Subject: RE: Lumber Dad's Mentor Group - Closed I was looking at the different training programs on the site today and noticed 2 that interest me; the 16 week olympic - 2x balanced and 20 week olympic - 2x balanced training programs. One thing I noticed that bothers me a little is that the long swim and long bike are during the week. Does anyone see any issues in moving those around a little so it fits my schedule a bit better?
