I just picked up The Triathlete's Training Bible by Joe Friel.  There is a large section on training plans.  I probably won't get a chance to dive into it until the weekend.  I'll share anything that I learn from the book.

Good time of the day to Steve's group!

Regarding training and nutrition plans - I think a certain amount of adjusting is always necessary unless the plan is built specifically for you by a coach. Remember that the plans online are based on average expectations' of an athlete's fitness and are aimed at not killing a novice You might be new to triathlons but have a good endurance base from your other activities, in which case you would probably benefit from a more advanced training plan. As I said before, unless you are super fit I would not recommend jumping from a beginner plan to HIM. Try an intermediate/advanced olympic.

In my case, I always have to adjust nutrition plans. I'm 5'2" and no matter how much I train if I consume the amount of calories normally suggested for a triathlete, I just gain or maintain weight.

poolgod - 2011-01-12 9:22 PM Hey Guys,

     Sorry about the empty post. I meant to comment on Grauch's post. I am in the same position he is. Beginner training plans are very short. I have a larger base than the maximum workouts in the plans. I am looking at the half iron training plans. I only have sprint distances planned for this season, but I am more interested in a great time than just finishing. Does anyone see a problem with training for a sprint with a Half Ironman program? I do not want to get bored with training and am looking for a challenge. Any feedback would be great. Thanks.

Justin/poolgod - Robbinsville, NJ

A HIM plan for a Sprint is pretty aggressive.  If you can handle it OK but review and monitor it carefully so you don't over-train and injure yourself.  There are usually two types of approaches, train just to be able to finish a certain distance comfortably or train for a really competitive finish time.  I personally am trying to get all the distances under my belt and will then concentrate on getting faster/better.  If you have the time and endurance for a HIM program, then you should do REALLY well at the sprint race. Again, just don't overdue it.

myred86 - 2011-01-12 7:29 PM All I know is that almost 50 year old Rob could royally kick 40 year old Rob's butt!  Ooops- can we say "butt" on here?

oh we can definitely say butt (and more) here :-).  This forum needs to be fun, I personally don't mind if its not squeaky clean.  Lets just make sure the BT police don't complain.

Subject: Handlebar Palsy - watch out for this!!

2 more days left to get in some more training hours. Get out there or into the gym!

Hope everyone is having a better week than me. Have only been able to run twice and nothing else.  I got something nicknamed Handlebar Palsy while overdoing it on my new Tri bike last Saturday.  4 hrs in a new and uncomfortable position did me in.  Apparently the pressure you put on your wrists, elbows and arms can damage the nerve that controls your fingers. If your fingers ever feel tingly after a long ride that’s why. It’s supposed to be temporary.

http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/399/handlebar_palsy_a_common_strain_in.html

Well it’s been almost a week and I still have no control over my pinky and ring finger on my right hand.  I’m seeing a hand specialist tomorrow and will also need to have my bike adjusted for this not to happen again.  Wanted to make you all aware of it so that if you experience any weird feelings in your fingers you should look into getting a professional bike fitting to review your handlebar position and your overall position on the bike. I would advice that anyway for all riders to maximize comfort and power.

Steven, hope you get some good news from the doctor tomorrow.
At this point, I cannot ride my tri bike as it is just so very uncomfortable. I'll be taking it back to the store. Going back to Trek.

Thanks for your thoughts Steve. I still have a couple of weeks before I dive into a 20 week program, as I am aiming for a late July race. So I hope to build on my swimming base before then. depending on how that goes, I will pick an appropriate plan.

I hope you get some good news from the doctor tomorrow. Thats good info on the handlebars. I picked up a Y2K online last fall and did some self fitting based on what I found online. I think you just convinced me to pay for the professional fitting. Can anyone offer some advice on where to get fitted in Central NJ. Not sure if there are rules against naming actual bike shops or not, but I have heard very good things about a few shops out by the beach. I want to get this one right, cause I am 5'8" with short legs, so I am on 650cc wheels and a small frame. I am comfy on the bike, but it needs to be fitted correctly. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Steve I would like to join this group, if it's still open.   I'm a newbie to Tri's.   I'm looking to do a sprint in June and July timeframe.  Here's some info...

Name: Mike - Colorado Springs, CO

ME: I do software development and sit on my butt all day.  I started doing weight lifting about three years ago, I've added about 20 pounds of muscle and fat.  I decided I need to get fit and into shape.  Last year, a friend talked me into doing a Half Mary.  I did it, but afterwards took a break, which I never got back into training.  I like variety when training, which is why the TRI's appeal to me.  I'm 40 years old and once I got married, found little or no time to do my various activates.  I've always been a multi-sport athlete.  I need help with my nutrition.  When I was training in for my Half Mary around the 6 miles or longer sessions, I would feel sick afterwards.  I 'm pretty sure I was not eating enough carbs the night before.  This one of my goals is to work on my diet.

Family Status :  Married - 5 years 3 kids (hers

Current Training: I am currently training about every other day for about an 1 hour a day (weights/Basketball/run/MTB). I need look into getting a road bike.  My weakest part is the swimming.  I have not swam since High School.  I'm looking at the sprinters log with emphasis on swimming.

Weightless: I am currently 240, I’ve added about 8 pounds form my half mary and like to drop done to the 210 range.

Goals:
Goal #1 Do not drown!!!!
Goal # 2 Get fit and in shape with the proper diet.
Goal# 3  Finish the sprint without drowning or walking in the running piece.
Goal # 4 Be prepared to start next year to do at last a OLY.

Subject: Room for 1 more?
Hey Steve,
A little late coming to the party but wondering if you can squeeze one more into the group?

Name: Troy - Sydney, Australia

ME: Self-employed Video Producer....which means mostly sitting on my backside in front of a computer most of the day. I started this work about 5 years ago and have put on about 2-3kgs per year. My weight peaked in November at 97kgs, I have been training since mid-november and weight is now down to around 89-90kgs. Ideally aiming for low 80's.

In a past life (15 plus years ago) I graduated with a degree in Sport Science and worked as personal trainer. Absolutely love sport, but not keen on exercise....there is a difference...lol.

Have been involved in soccer, martial arts or other team sports since 5 years old but in the last couple of years haven't been able to participate as much as possible.

Finally decided I needed to do something about my lifestyle last Nov. so started walking, then jogging but needed a goal to keep the motivation up. Despite larger body frame I have always had a desire to try a triathlon so jumped into it feet first.

Last weekend I completed my first sprint triathlon (Swim was only 500m though, 20k bike and 5km run). Half way through the run thought this would be my first and last tri but 10 minutes after the race I was looking forward to my next one. Really enjoying the variety of training.

Family Status :  Married - 13 years and have 3 kids

Current Training: Not a huge fan of running and my results in last weekends tri prove that but currently train 6 days a week basically alternating all three legs. Generally 45-70 minutes per workout. No set plan though so would love to get some tips/suggestions for a regular plan to improve overall results.

I am looking at another sprint in Feb, and one in March before trying Olympic distance.

Weight:  90kg would like to drop another 8kgs.

Goals:  Weightloss
Complete HIM, Oly and also 1.6km open water swim.

I don't know of any rule against promoting shops here.  I go to Jason @ Halters Cycles in Monmouth Junction.  He's very knowledgeable and a great guy to know. Him and his crew maintain 6 mile run, an awesome mountain biking course in Somerset.

Hey Mike,

Your goals sound identical to mine when I started this just before turning 40.  I didn't drown but I did walk a bit during the running piece of my first sprint.  Nothing wrong with that at all.  Its all about getting to the finish line in one piece.  You're going to love it.

I regret buying a brand new bike when I started. Great bike, Trek 1.5, but I would have done just as good with something off Ebay or Craigslist.  Once you get good, you'll want to upgrade and you don't want to be kicking yourself for spending a lot on your first one.

Welcome to the group and good luck!

Hey Troy,

I logged on to close the group and here you are.  Just in time!  Always room for one more, especially from my favorite place in the world.   Sounds like you've caught the bug and are well on your way.  With Bondi Beach in your back yard you'll have no problem improving your running game.

Glad to have you in the group.

Hey folks,

We're officially closed for new members.  Welcome again everyone!  Just as a reminder, please post your weekly summary after Saturday's training. You can use this format:

(Sunday through Saturday totals)
Type, time, distance
Swim = 3:30  8,250
Bike = 1:45  31 miles
Run = 1:07  5 miles
Other = 2:00  7 miles mountain biking

Any colorful comments would be great.  I'll pick up everyone's posts and send out a summary by Sunday night. Again, this isn't a competition, just something to keep everyone motivated.  I'm already bummed knowing that I will have little to show on this week's summary. Motivation to do more next week Smile

Have a great weekend everyone!

Steve and everyone else,

The last few weeks I've been running and biking.  Looking at the plans, the sprint plan will only challenge me in the swimming and the OLY I'm not sure I'll have enough time to do it.  I'm thinking of making a custom were I do more then the sprint and less then the OLY.  I'll try the sprint for a week, but I think I'm going to do the running and biking with ease.  Any thoughts?

Since we're now closed, what's the easiest way to find our group?  I have been finding it via the open group- I'm afraid I won't find us if there isn't a good way?

Oh yeah- I'm still off of running for at least three more weeks.  Making good progress on the heel spur / PF though.  Doc taped me up yesterday so I couldn't do the Master's swim practice this morning (boo!).  He also gave me a snappy looking boot to wear at night.  He said it works great except for light sleepers.  Guess what- I'm a light sleeper!  Been tired all day.  Did get a 12 mile trainer (drainer?) ride in after work though.  Number won't be too great this week for sure.
