Tracy - you must live pretty close to Humboldt Redwoods State Park. My wife and I honeymooned there 14 years ago. Karl - I have been a swimmer my whole life, but I just learned freestyle last year using Total Immersion. I still have struggles with breathing and discomfort after the swim, but I've been improving that quite a bit since joining this group in January. Hang in there. With tenacity and the help you'll get from this group, you'll have it nailed in no time. --------- On the training front I got a good 800 yards in yesterday at the pool. It did hail on me for my last 50 yards, but it was light. After that it turned to a heavy rain and I decided to run on the treadmill since I hadn't brought rain gear with me for my run. I wasn't having the usual discomfort after the swim, but I just seemed to have no energy left for the run. Even going easy it felt difficult. I think it has to do with my lack of sleep. Over the past few days I've only gotten 5 to 6 hours a night and my energy is down. Have to get into bed a bit earlier tonight. I'm also planning an open water practice swim for Saturday afternoon at one of the local reservoirs. I have never swam in a wetsuit before and with this season's first tri coming up next week, I need to get the feel for it. Yes! I live very close to Humboldt Redwoods SP! We're lucky that we can go there quite often! It's beautiful! |

We have not been very often for the last few years due to the children. Toddlers and fishing hooks don't mix too well. We just went to my in-laws pond last weekend though. My son is now 6 and loves digging for worms so we had some free bait Ok - back to training. Progress on my swim this morning. A very little progress but every little bit counts right? 6 x 50's and the last 4 were under 40 seconds (39 seconds - told you a little bit of progress). Finally. My back held up well, no worse for wear. After the 50's the workout called for a timed 200. Ha ha, that was a joke. My arms were burning, I felt like I was not even moving, I knew my time was going to be awful. 3'13" so, not great but not as bad as I felt LOL! John, that story about your flip turn just cracked me up. My daughter wants to know why I'm laughing Dirk, glad you were able to enjoy a visit with your nephew. He sounds like an amazingly courageous person. I think often of the soldiers fighting for our freedom when I'm out riding my bike without a care in the world. Gets me all choked up. Wowza! That's fast swimming in my book.
Um....yeah! That's smoking!!! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() AJ, 200 jumps a season sounds pretty amazing. I have always wanted to sky dive but quite honestly I am to cheap to go for the lessons and then spend the money for all the jumps. Triathlon is soooo much cheaper. Your half marathon time is pretty solid for a first one. Spend some time training and that time can be CRUSHED with the hard work and dedication you are talking about. Amping up your tri training will work quite well. 4 hours a week is pretty slim for time but for a sprint it is quite adequate. I am not sure I would know how to only train for 4 hours. Heck, I trained for just over 2.5 today. |

You know I've been unsatisfied for a while so this workout I tried to stop whining, let go of the excuses and get to work. It hurt bad! It's hard to drive myself to that point when I'm all alone. |

I'm a personal trainer, yoga teacher, and Spinning instructor. (I used to work with wildlife. That's how I got the name owl_girl.) The single MOST IMPORTANT job on the earth!! Hands down!! My wife and I decided years ago to go this route and it has paid huge dividends. Both of our girls are pretty good, solid individuals and I have their mother to thank for the time she has spent in the home with them, teaching and instructing. Moms are the BEST! (And I hope dads are alright too.) Being a mom is a pretty great job. I feel lucky to be able to stay at home with him. I even get to take my son to work with me. We do not have to put him in childcare! He LOVES going to the gym! Most important and hardest job too. My wife decided to stay home after having our first. It was a bit of a surprise to both of us since she was a high highfaluting finance nerd and made a LOT more $$$ than me at the time, but I agree that it has paid huge dividends. That area is absolutely beautiful. When I lived in San Diego I made a few road trips up there and decided besides New England that is another place I could absolutely enjoy living. |

![]() | ![]() Dina, those swim times are crazy fast. And the key is you put forth tremendous effort. And AJ, that's a nice half marathon time for a first. I cruised in at just over 2:03 on my first one. as Dirk says, you will smoke that time in short order with the training you're talking about. Consistency will win the day. And everyone, never get frustrated comparing your times with other people, or for us **ahem** "older" folks, comparing ourselves to our previous (younger) selves. There are simply too many variables to get hung up on that. Just come up with a plan, train to the plan, give it your all on race day, and let the results fall where they will. If you do all that, you have to be pleased. And for the record, I can neither confirm nor deny that I ran rum from the south during prohibition. And Jeff, 1000 calories in a day??? That's my ice cream budget! Edited by wbayek 2012-04-05 9:01 PM |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well, Day 1of the bike build is a FAIL! I did manage to get the breaks installed (and they work), but that's about it! After getting the handle bars transferred from Wally I found out they are too small! As in smaller than 26mm, how is that possible! I was disappointed to say the least when I put the aero bars on and they just fell! Yes I did use the spacers that are for 26mm handles! Good thing the LBS is open tomorrow. I am going to see how many trips I can make in one day! Does anyone have a suggestion one how to break the chain? I figured the easiest is to spend money on the actual chain tool! But I am cheap so if there is another method I will use that! On the brighter side when I informed the budget committee that I was in need of additional parts, I only got a slight roll of the eyes! I think I have broken her will to say I have enough! ![]() |

![]() Hope you have room for one more in the group. You sound like a fun bunch. NAME: Jax
2012 GOAL: Waking up on 01/01/13 and saying "what a ride." I want to conquer both races planned so far and see what else the year can bring. WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD MENTEE: I try to absorb as much info as possible from those wiser, more-experienced individuals who have so much to teach me. I'm flexible, hard working, fun, loyal, laid back and laugh at myself daily. I am a great teammate/cheerleader and consider the success of others on the team just as important if not more important than my own. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jo63 - 2012-04-06 7:10 AM One last post .... So I entered my new shoes in march into the equipment tracker but it is not tracking them. Is there something I need to do besides just enter them in? Once you've entered them in the equipment tracker, they'll appear in the equipment box where you enter your training. Whenever you enter a run you did with them, select them in the equipment list and it'll start calculating the mileage. Lots of good stuff to read, but I have to post and run before I leave. I wanted to post about my run yesterday - Six mile tempo run and I just cruised... all the way down into the mid-8s with stuff left in the tank at the end! Average pace for the run was 9min/mile including a WU and CD above 10 minutes a mile. It was a ton of fun to let loose and more evidence that frequent running slow is a great way to build speed. Okay - back to catch up on all the post! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Welcome Jax. Starting your training this early will have you prepared and more than ready for your first race in July and, if you chose, the olympic race will fit nicely into your training schedule. You have tons of time to get the fitness you'll need for the longer distance. You'll need to make your logs public or at least visible to friends in order for us to help make training evaluations and leave some inspirational comments for you in your inspires occasionally. If you want your logs visible to friends only you'll need to add all of us to your friends list. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Joanne, I am pleased your husband is alright and I hope he wakes up, so to speak, about his health. You are being a fine example of maintaining a heart healthy lifestyle and maybe sometime soon he'll take notice. Until then I suggest you NOT push at him. only make quiet, subtle comments about how much you are enjoying your runs and rides, diet and exercise. Eventually he may come around. John, That is a very nice tempo run to say the least. By finishing with some left in the tank you hit the right target. Tempo runs in my opinion should not be done so that you feel blown up when you have completed them. You should feel recovered AS you are running your cool down and be ready for more mileage if you wanted to. A mid 8 minute mile is pretty solid running. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() We are going to take one more person in the group. We are planning to take 15 mentee's and we are at 14 right now with Jax coming on. Almost full folks. Once full we're going to "get our fix" going into full swing. Race season has started for a couple of us and for everyone else it's right around the corner. I, for one, am READY TO GO!!!! As I post, this I am getting ant in my pants for the season to get into full swing. But I certainly have a lot of my own training to do before I am feel I am ready to race. BTW, I am not going to be able to race in Muncie on May 12. I have a nephew getting married that day. I think it is really inconsiderate of him to plan his wedding during triathlon season. So Brenda, i may try to talk Lis into letting me do Pokagon the following week since it's close too. On my personal training note for the day: I have a 12 mile run coming up and a 20 mile easy ride following. Yesterday's 40 mile ride kind of has my legs a little fatigued so I am interested in the run today to see how my legs will respond. |

My husband and I got married in January just so we would not have to miss any races. (I forgot to tell you guys that he races, too.) I guess we could take an awesome anniversary trip to Australia for a race some year. |
