Listed the races I'm looking at for the season. In Germany, the last triathlons that I could find on a calendar were in September - which is the month of the Berlin Marathon.

My thought process in choosing these particular races:

May race - a sprint that uses a pool for the swim. Using this to get to know the sport, feel out transitions etc - and to figure out how to navigate a German event.

June race - about one month after the first; this has an open water swim - I'll experience the jostling, elbowing, submerging and other stories I've heard.

August - an Olympic distance. This will give about two months to increase the distance on my swim and bike...by this time I should be running plenty in preparation for the Marathon next month. This ends the tri events for me.

September - Berlin Marathon. Assuming all is well, I'll do the marathon with a goal time of 3:45.

I wondering if this might be a bit ambitious. The running will come, and if I stay healthy, I'm not overly concerned. The swimming should be ok. Swimming is coming back to me - I swam distance in high school its just a matter of getting back into it - which over the past week doesn't seem like a problem. That leaves bike - the event I have little experience with and will be using a mountain bike (unless my wife buys me a nice new one for my birthday in April

Question for the group:

What is your biggest obstacle for achieving your triathlon goals?

I would say staying healthy - especially as I try to overlay marathon training with my tri training.

And - after my first training session of biking - then running - getting used to the feeling in the legs after getting off the bike. I swear it took a mile before I thought my legs were my legs - wierd!

Staying motivated and not allowing this to just be another phase that after a few months, or after a race or two, I'll quit. I've done that 2 times now, and third time's hopefully going to be the charm. Injuries have been partly to blame, but mostly just pure laziness.

Congrats on the 1st day back in the pool.  The first couple of swim sessions usually wipe me out (after a long break).  Don't be discouraged!!!  Keep plugging away at it.

We want to hear about every single swimming victory you have (and struggle).

There are a few very experienced swimmers in this group that can help.

If you would like some input on drills/workouts for the pool let me know.

In general, don't worry about your speed (for now).  Work on adding a little distance/overall duration each time you swim.  The idea is to build your swim endurance.

Danny, In my case I would say SWIMING On the good note, a friend of mine has volunteered to help me learn how to swim efficiently. She has been swiming for quite a while now, so any help that I can get on the swiming part..I take it Mike ps: I'll add my races as soon as I get home. And I'm getting new running shoes on payday (Tuesday) next week wooooooooo hooooooooo

Hi Brian,

It's good to look at how others are doing to help meanure your progress, but don't get too hung up on this.

Every person is different.  You are out there doing your own thing!

Keep track of everything in your logs, and try to mainly focus on constant improvement.

When first started running, I was getting passed by kids, people MUCH older than me, and I kid you not, my second 5K I got BLOWN AWAY by a very pregnant lady.  That was a tough one.  But then I realized that they are all good athletes and/or working very hard also.

Just do your thing, and have a great time!

Txhokie - 2008-01-10 10:40 AM dhyte - 2008-01-10 11:30 AM Question for the group: What is your biggest obstacle for achieving your triathlon goals? I think that it is my endurance. I have been looking at the more advance triathletes' logs on BT. They bike and run with a lower heart rate at faster speeds then I do.

Thom,

Good job on the race lineup!

The 1st race in the pool should be a lot of fun. I assume the water will be warm enough that you will not be wearing a wetsuit (will you for the other races?).  I'm curious how they will do the swim.  You may end up having some jostling in that race too!

3:45 marathon...that's a great time.  I'm alot slower
How does that compare with your marathon PR, and when was that?

Be very careful on guarding against injury, or back off if problems occur.  Obviously this takes longer to recover from that other more short term obstacles.

Dead legs off the bike...you need to practice brick workouts more (combined bike/run workouts).  It'll come together though!

I'll admit it...I'm lazy !

having said that, I start getting crazy when I don't work out for a while.

Keep at it and try to find ways to make it fun.  Group workouts, join a local triathlon club, whatever...

Maybe reward yourself for achieving some of your goals??

Having workout partners that keep me accountable, and showing up has been a great tool for getting out of bed on some days.

Thom,

3:45 marathon...that's a great time.  I'm alot slower
How does that compare with your marathon PR, and when was that?

Danny,

Marathon PB is 4:01 - though I was on pace to do sub 4 when I got a quizy from a warm lemon tea that I drank at KM25 - which violated rule number one "don't do on race day anything that you didn't do during training". I was training for 3:45 last year and was on track until my injury.

dhyte - 2008-01-11 8:47 PM

Is there anywhere you can borrow/rent a road bike ??

My next door neighbor may have a road bike I can borrow - he is Afghanistan right now, due back in a week or so, I'll ask and see what he says. He is a pretty serious duoathlete so he might not be quite ready to let a mere mortal use his very expensive bikes. But, at a minimum, certainly - I'm sure he'll help me locate an affordable used (or new) one.

Thom

Let's talk about Triathlon Swimming....

Some of you have sprint triathlons coming up throughout the spring.
I'm not sure about each specific race's venue/layout, but there may be some swims that are in:

     - pools
     - freshwater lakes
     - the ocean

Some of you may have a variety of questions, and might not know where to begin...

So, I'll answer any question about:

- race starting formats (wave start vs mass start, floating vs beach),
- appropriate attire for race (depending on race length, water temp)
- equipment questions (swimcaps, goggles, etc)
- breathing
- sighting
- drafting
- pace selection
- wave entry/exit
- bathroom issues before during swim....
- survival tips

Fire away with those questions !!!

My biggest physical obstacle has to be the run. Since I swam as a kid, I don't feel I'm going to have a lot of trouble getting up to speed there. We bike a lot as a family -- not at great speeds, but at least I'm used to being on the bike for longish periods of time. But the run.... Oh, the run. It scares me. I can walk for hours, but I'd rather not walk the entire run portion of the race. Then again, I can only run for 2-3 minutes at a time without wanting to just fall over and quit. That's something I really need to work on.

Otherwise, my biggest obstacle is just finding the time to get to the gym, in the pool, or out on the road. But I'm working on it.

Hi Gang

How are we all, another wet and cold day in my part of the UK. I've eased back a little this weekend as I've had a bit of discomfort in my right thigh and groin area, will have a gentle 30 mins on the treadmill tomorrow to see how it feels, fingers crossed. Bit of a dilema as my first race of the season is the morning after my birthday and I think a meal out is being planned, may have to reschedule the run or face the wrath of my 9 & 6 year old daughters!!

Have a crazy day peeps!

PS - Danny thanks for the hints on my swimming, I'll be in the ppol again later in the week

My screen name is....."DannyBoyis12" (chosen because I may never get past the mentality of a 12 year old (I think I like it that way !!!).  This is a long standing private joke in my family...when I make a remarkably immature comment, my wife just looks at me, smiles, and at gives me the look that we both know acknowledges my 12 year old status!

I bought a wireless adapter last night and was having some trouble with it conflicting with my PC.  I rebooted this morning and all was good again.  I read some stuff about open up either my firewall settings, or same with the router DHCP settings, or even checking for firmware updates for the router.

I tried to get away from the technical stuff and just goof off with this new toy, but it is never that simple.....

My list of games:

   Halo3
   Guitar Hero II/III
   DDR
   Need For Speed
   Mx vs ATV

Thinking about buying Call of Duty 4

I will never get anything done now that we have this new toy!!!!!!!
